Hotel Review: Ashtree House Hotel, Paisley, Renfrewshire, Scotalnd - June 2019
A film review of the Ashtree House Hotel in Paisley, Scotland, filmed in June 2019.
I've just added a new film to my Hotel Reviews: Scotland playlist, here: of a review of the Ashtree House Hotel in Paisley, Scotland.
I stayed at this hotel for one night in June 2019. One night on a bed and breakfast basis cost £69.70, which was a bargain for a hotel of this quality.
The hotel is located at the top of Orr Square around a ten minute walk from Paisley Gilmour Street railway station, and conveniently close to the University of the West of Scotland's Paisley Campus. Be warned if you are approaching on foot with luggage from Paisley Gilmour Street that the going is easy until you get to Orr Square, which whilst only around 70 metres long is an extremely steep street. The hotel itself combines a traditional comfortable feel with a contemporary aesthetic. I was impressed with the overall quality of the hotel product.
My room (room 8) had a distinct 'boutique' feel to it. It had a lovely large bed with bedside drawers and ample plug sockets, a sofa, huge JVC flat screen TV with Netflix, tea and coffee making facilities with biscuits, a fireplace (fire not in use), radiators, dressing table, large wardrobe, draws for storage and plenty of towels. The bathroom was compact with a decent shower cubicle, toilet and sink. The bathroom had blue light bulbs which means that bright white light isn't shone into the bedroom at night. There were complimentary soaps and gels.
Other than a little bit of wear and tear and mould and a broken extractor fan in the bathroom, this was a most impressive room to stop in.
Breakfast consisted of a small continental / cereal buffet and a hot item, which could be ordered from the menu. I opted for the full Scottish breakfast, which wasn't a huge serving, but was certainly very tasty.
This film features views of Orr Square, the hotel exterior, reception, the lounge, dining room / restaurant, breakfast menu and food items and a detailed review of room 8.
I would certainly consider staying at this hotel again in future.

Paisley is a town situated in the west central Lowlands of Scotland. Located on the northern edge of the Gleniffer Braes, the town borders the city of Glasgow to the east, and straddles the banks of the White Cart Water, a tributary of the River Clyde. It serves as the administrative centre for the Renfrewshire council area, and is the largest town in the historic county of the same name. Paisley is often cited as Scotland's largest town and is the fifth largest settlement in the country, although it does not have city status. To read more about Paisley, click here: .

Remembering Bob Crewe, Rev. Ian Paisley, Joe Sample
The Fifth Four Season
A CREATIVE MUTI-TALENT, A LATE-LFE CONVERSION, AND A JAZZ MASTER
Bob Crewe was the writer/arranger/producer who part of the genius behind The Four Seasons. With keyboardist Bob Gaudio, he co-wrote some of their top hits including the two 1962 smashes, “Sherry” and “Big Girls Don’t Cry”. He and Gaudio also featured Frankie Valli’s voice in “Can’t Take My Eyes Off Of You” (1967), and the classic “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” (1965) for the Walker Brothers. The Rev. Ian Paisley was the fiery Protestant from Northern Ireland, who opposed reconciliation with the minority Catholics for most of his life. Eventually, after the 1998 Good Friday agreement he changed his views and served with members of Sinn Fein in a coalition government. Joe Sample was a leading 1960’s jazz pianist and composer, who helped form The Jazz Crusaders.
Stanley Robert Bob Crewe[1] (November 12, 1930 – September 11, 2014) was an American songwriter, dancer, singer, manager, record producer and fine artist. He was known for producing, and co-writing with Bob Gaudio, a string of Top 10 singles for the Four Seasons.
As a songwriter, his most successful songs included Silhouettes (co-written with Frank Slay); Big Girls Don't Cry, Walk Like a Man, Rag Doll, Silence Is Golden, The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine (Anymore), Can't Take My Eyes Off You and Bye, Bye, Baby (all co-written with Gaudio); Let's Hang On! (wriiten with Sandy Linzer and Denny Randell); and My Eyes Adored You and Lady Marmalade (both co-written with Kenny Nolan). He also had hit recordings with the Rays, Diane Renay, Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels, Freddy Cannon, Lesley Gore, Oliver, Michael Jackson, Bobby Darin, Roberta Flack, Peabo Bryson, Patti LaBelle, and his own Bob Crewe Generation.
In 1953 Crewe met and partnered professionally with Frank Slay Jr., a young pianist from Texas. Their collaboration created several hit songs (including a small record label XYZ), for which Crewe performed as the demo singer. Crewe and Slay's 1957 recording session with the Rays for their XYZ label (picked up nationally by Cameo Records) produced two big song hits. Produced by Crewe, the record's A-side, Silhouettes, became a doo-wop anthem of the era. Climbing to #3 on the Billboard Hot 100 for 1957, Silhouettes displayed the flair for story-driven lyrics, innovative musical hooks, and a final lyrical twist that were to become known as Crewe trademarks. In 1965, with a slightly faster tempo, Silhouettes became a hit again for the British group Herman's Hermits, reaching #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. Although Bob Dylan also recorded Silhouettes during his legendary Basement Tapes sessions of the late 1960s, that version remains unreleased.[citation needed]
Daddy Cool was the B side of that same 1957 session. The song, also written and produced by Crewe-Slay, achieved considerable note. Both Daddy Cool and Silhouettes were covered the same year by the Canadian group the Diamonds. The Diamonds' version of Daddy Cool reached #10 on the Billboard charts. In 1961, Guy Daddy Cool Darrell released another single version on the Warwick label. In 1977, the UK band Darts made the song their first-ever studio recording and it hit #6. Crewe and Slay built on those successes with a deal with new Philadelphia-based Swan Records. Sessions with Billy and Lillie, singers Billy Ford and Lillie Bryant, produced the 1958 hit Lah Dee Dah, which reached the #9 position on the Billboard Hot 100; the following year, Billy and Lillie's recording of Lucky Ladybug hit #14. Also for Swan Records, Crewe and Slay helped continue the rise of Freddy Cannon with their Top Ten hits Tallahassee Lassie and Okefenokee

Eine Brise - Glasgow Green - Launch for Arctic Circle Cycle trip for Dummy Jim
Kagel described A Breeze as a Transient Action For 111 Cyclists. The cyclists are organised into a cohort approximately 5 metres wide by 150 metres long. As they approach, cycle past, and draw away from spectators along their route they perform a defined sequence of specified Sound Events (ringing of bells, whistling, singing, flutter-tongue sounds, wind noises). The action itself is over within minutes.
In its combining of contraries -- art/sport, sound/music, freedom/discipline -- A Breeze embodies Kagel's continual questioning of convention.
In May 1951 a profoundly deaf 28 year old Scotsman called James Duthie -- known fondly to his local community as 'Dummy Jim' -- cycled solo on a return trip from the small fishing town of Cairnbulg in the north east of Scotland to the Arctic Circle.
The journey of over 3000 miles took three months and was managed on a budget of just £12.
On returning to Scotland, Duthie wrote about his travels and in 1955 a slim volume called 'I Cycled into the Arctic Circle' was published. James sold copies of the book door to door to cover the cost of future excursions.
Sadly the cyclist was killed in a mysterious road accident in 1965.
In 2000, artist Matt Hulse received a copy of the book from his mother, who had unearthed the hidden gem whilst working at a second hand bookshop on Iona. Inspired by the journal's eccentricity and genuine warmth, Matt decided to set about making a film of James Duthie's unique story.
A year later the wheels were set in motion with the blessing of an SAC Creative Scotland Award.
Since then the wonderful Dummy Jim website has evolved and with the invaluable support of Kindly Folk, initial filming starts this year.
Come rain or shine, friend or foe, hill or flat, puncture or no, Matt and his team have not stopped pedalling.

Bentley Continental GT V8 S - Interior and Exterior Walkaround
The Bentley Continental GT is a grand tourer manufactured and marketed by British automaker Bentley Motors since 2003. It was the first car released by Bentley under Volkswagen AG management, after the company's acquisition in 1998, and the first Bentley to employ mass production manufacturing techniques.
The vehicle debuted in 2003 at the Geneva Motor Show, followed by Le Mans, the 2003 Goodwood Festival of Speed and the 2003 annual Bentley Drivers Club meeting at Silverstone. The car differed from the previous Continental R & T models in terms of its concept: although much of the car is hand assembled, it is a mass-produced car made in significantly larger numbers. It is not a coachbuilt car. The price at launch was less than the Continental R (approximately half), giving the car a wider customer base.
The Continental GT is equipped with a 6.0 litre twin-turbocharged W12 engine, which produces a DIN-rated power output of 560 PS (412 kW; 552 bhp) at 6,100 rpm, and torque of 650 N⋅m (479 lbf⋅ft) at 1,600-6,100 rpm. A Torsen-based permanent four-wheel drive is standard. It can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (0.0 to 62.1 mph) in 4.8 seconds, and go on to reach a top speed of 318 km/h (197.6 mph).
Early models include a choice of 6 body colours (Diamond Black, Burnt Oak, Cypress, Neptune, Spruce, and Umbrian Red), 8 hide colours (Beluga, Burnt Oak, Laurel, Nautic, Portland, Saffron, Savannah, Saddle), 5 veneer types (Burr Oak, Burr Walnut, Dark Stained Walnut, Madrona, Piano Black) and 4 carpet and seatbelt colours (Beluga, Burnt Oak, Laurel, Nautic).
American Musician Prince owned a 2006 Continental GT Coupe in Baby Blue. Upon his Death, in April 2016, the car was placed on permanent display in the sound stage at his famous Paisley Park Studios in Chanhassen, Minnesota.
Ordering of the second generation Continental GT began in October 2010, with deliveries of 2011 Continental GT began in the first quarter of 2011.
The GT V8 version of the Continental GT has a twin-turbo 4-litre (3,993cc) V8 engine (developed jointly with Audi) that produces 500 hp (373 kW) and 487 lb⋅ft (660 N⋅m) of torque. The car is capable of reaching a top speed of 192 mph (309 km/h). It also features Cylinder deactivation technology that can deactivate half of the cylinders when they're not needed to improve fuel economy by up to 8%. Other changes, including on-demand steering assistance, weight reduction, better engine heat management, overrun alternator charging and eco-tyres, improve overall fuel consumption by 40% from the W12's 17.1 mpg to the V8's 26.1 mpg.
The vehicle was unveiled at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, followed by the SkyLounge in Munich, the 2012 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition and the 2012 Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The vehicle was unveiled at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, followed by the 2012 Qatar International Motor Show.
Delivery of the Bentley Continental GTC began in late 2011.
The Continental GT Speed Coupé is a version of the Continental GT W12 with increased engine power to 616 hp (459 kW; 625 PS) and 590 lb⋅ft (800 N⋅m) of torque. It also features a lowered ride height and chassis and uprated suspension. It has a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph). and can accelerate from 0-60 mph (0-97 km/h) in 4.0 seconds.
The vehicle was first unveiled at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in 2012, followed by the 2012 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the 2012 Moscow International Auto Salon, the 2012 Paris Motor Show, 2012 AUTO ZÜRICH, and the 2012 LA Auto Show.
The GT Speed Cabriolet was first unveiled at the 2012 North American International Auto Show, followed by the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, 2012 New York International Auto Show, 2012 Paris International Auto Salon and the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show.
The 2012 Continental GTZ is the second Continental GTZ by Zagato and was built on the 2nd generation Continental platform with body panels covering the top of rear wheels.
The vehicle was unveiled at the 2012 Concorso d'Eleganza.
Available in a coupe and convertible body, The Continental GT V8 S is a version of the Continental GT V8 with increased engine power to 528 PS (388 kW; 521 hp) at 6,000 rpm and 680 N⋅m (502 lb⋅ft) of torque at 1,700 rpm. It also features increased agility and body control to match the engine's higher output, lowered suspension through an aerodynamic front splitter, discrete side sills and rear diffuser in Beluga gloss black, new exclusive 20-inch wheels with open-spoke design, red-painted brake calipers, optional new sports exhaust, optional duo-tone interiors, choice of interior trim in seventeen hide colours, unique contrast centre stripe for the hide-trimmed roof lining matching the colour of the main hide, knurled chrome detailing to the gearshift lever and ventilation controls, Piano Black veneers and 'V8 S' on each sill tread plate.
