This is a Travel Vlog of our time we spent in beautiful South Dakota! We hiked the Badlands, visited Mount Rushmore, and of course stopped and got the legendary 5 cent coffee from Wall Drug. Me and my girlfriend adopted a minimalist lifestyle, bought a 2002 Chevy Astro Van and converted it into a camper van to travel the United States on an epic USA Van Life Road Trip!!

Wall Drug - South Dakota
Traveling along the I-90 you will notice something once you enter South Dakota - hundreds of billboards and signs giving everyone a heads up about a mysterious drug store for hundreds of miles in either direction. When you get to the miniature town of Wall and find out what their drug store is all about, you will start to understand the magnitude that is Wall Drug - one of America's greatest roadside attractions. Shop for anything you can think of in the midst of what is essentially a 76 thousand square foot free museum, filled with taxidermy animals, singing robot cowboys, free ice water and dirt cheap coffee.
WALL DRUG STORE
One of the world’s most well-known tourist attractions, it’s hard to believe Wall Drug Store got its start with something many wouldn’t even turn their heads at today … the promise of free ice water. But in fact, the Husteads turned free ice water into a million-dollar idea with a little determination, quick thinking and a lot of signs.
Signs with catchy jingles like “Get a soda . . . Get a root beer . . . turn next corner . . . Just as near . . . To Highway 16 & 14. . . Free Ice Water. . . Wall Drug” drew weary travelers into the small-town drug store to enjoy a refreshing break. Today, more than 2 million visitors a year stop at the popular roadside attraction for a meal or activity, 5 cent coffee, and ice water – which is still free.
Wall Drug with Ted Hustead - Circa 1932
Located in Wall, South Dakota, Wall Drug has always been a popular stop on the road to the more populated areas like Mount Rushmore or Rapid City. As a matter of fact, when the United States Air Force operated the Minuteman missile silos east of Wall, the Hustead family offered free coffee and donuts to the service personnel as they traveled to and from Ellsworth Air Force Base near Rapid City. Wall Drug honors the men and women in the armed services by providing them free coffee and donuts to this day.
That's the nice store in the city.

Wall Drugs
In this episode of Cheap Family Travel ( Nick Regan, Maggie, and Kate stopped in at Wall Drug. In 1931, Ted and Dorothy Hustead bought the Wall DrugStore in Wall, South Dakota, on the edge of the Badlands National Park. Business was slow during the Great Depression, but Dorothy came up with an idea that would convince travelers heading west on I-90 that they should stop in Wall - Free Ice Water! Within hours, the drug store was packed with customers getting their free water, and that is how the legend of the Wall Drug Store began. Today, Wall drug is known as a South Dakota tourist attraction with great homemade doughnuts and restaurants, shops, and good family fun. Make sure you get your free ice water!
Now, all across the South Dakota landscape, you'll see hundreds of signs advertising free ice water and 5 cents for a cup of coffee. The Wall Drug Store grew over the years and now spans several blocks of Main Street in Wall. The cafe seats 530 people, and the drug mall includes a donut factory, gift shops, an arcade, a candy store, a mining shop, a western clothing store, a western art gallery, and even the Travelers Chapel!
Wall Drug Store is not far from Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore, the Crazy Horse Monument, and Rapid City, South Dakota. On your next visit to South Dakota, step back in time by stopping in Wall for a drink. Just follow the Wall Drug Store signs!
