SWC Free Walk 139, Tadworth via Headley Heath and Box Hill Circular.16/9/12.
A zone 6 walk in Surrey of around 13 miles and costing the princely sum of £3 return!
Starting out from Tadworth station, and with no actual walk instructions to follow, the walker navigates (such skills and a compass definitely needed on this walk! Adds to the excitement...) out of the town and into the open countryside, soon passing under the M25, and then into the village of Headley. Soon after, the walk crosses The National Trust's Headley Heath, a fine mix of heathland, woodland and chalk downland, with some great views. There's an option to climb White Hill, but this wasn't possible today due to the walker getting way-laid by an 'incident' near High Ashurst Outdoor Centre...
There's a climb to more fine views from Juniper Top prior to more forest walking for lunch at Box Hill.
After lunch, this walker chose to follow the North Downs Way (replicating Box Hill Circular Walk for a while), bypassing Box Hill village, all the way to Buckland Quarry/Hills. Thereafter, it's back over the M25, on to Walton Heath and its golf course before retracing steps over the common at Tadworth and back to the station.
A lovely walk on the fringes of London, though taking a little longer to reach than some other zone 6 walks. Surprisingly rural for the location.
As it currently stands, this 'map walk' definitely requires navigation skills; the presence of an outdoor centre in the forest is no coincidence...

#33 Walking Walton-on-the-Hill & Headley
While taking in a 4 Mile Walk between the Villages of Walton-on-the-Heath and Headley in Surrey, I also give a test run for my new GoPro Hero 6 Black. Please forgive some of the sound issues as at time of filming, I was still waiting for the adaptor jack to plug in the external mic which wasn't an issue on the GoPro Hero 4 Black but still, the GoPro 6 is a great camera to have with excellent stabilisation.

Surrey is a county in the South East of England and one of the home counties. The county borders Greater London to the north and north-east, Kent to the east, East Sussex to the south-east, West Sussex to the south, Hampshire to the west and south-west, and Berkshire to the north-west, and its historic county town is Guildford. Surrey County Council sits extraterritorially at Kingston upon Thames, part of Greater London since 1965. The London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Wandsworth, and parts of Lewisham (Hatcham) and Bromley (Penge) were in Surrey until 1889, and Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Sutton, and Richmond upon Thames south of the River Thames—in Greater London—were part of Surrey until 1965 at which point the county gained its first area north of the Thames, Spelthorne, from defunct Middlesex. Today's Surrey is divided into 11 districts (ten of which are boroughs): Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell, Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Tandridge, Waverley and Woking. Services such as roads, mineral extraction licensing, education, strategic waste and recycling infrastructure, births marriages and deaths registration, aspects of health services and most social and children's services are within the remit of Surrey County Council. The northeast of the county, such as the north of Tandridge (district), is in the wide part of the North Downs. Thus from the east, Tatsfield has two western pockets of slightly acid, loamy soils with free drainage otherwise has the expected shallow, lime-rich soil over chalk or limestone of the escarpment with lower parts of the escarpment summit here, where that topsoil has eroded, having slightly acid, loamy and clayey soils with impeded drainage soil. Westward, the shallow lime is found all the way along the North Downs to the western border, past Guildford only a few hundred metres narrow to Farnham Castle and even Dippenhall, the latter accompaniment is found on both sides only to Buckland, well before Dorking. A horseshoe of land including the rise north of Godstone of Godstone Hill that leads to the escarpment is free draining lime-rich loamy soil (i.e. alkaline). Continuing with the Downs, in a broad band, the far northern type soil slopes such as near Croydon come across the Surrey border at Banstead and Ewell, which is free draining, slightly acid but base-rich soils, producing extremely fertile pastures and deciduous woodland, which becomes the edging for both sides of the high escarpment at Box Hill and is just found for a brief while in a middle section in Polesden Lacey then throughout the northern slope carrying on westward. Chipstead, Banstead and Tadworth have the first free draining slightly acid loamy soil that tops the wider downs to Guildford and is found around Dorking and the across the Vale of Holmesdale north of the Greensand Hills.

SUMMARY
=======
Surrey ( SURR-ee) is a county in South East England which borders Kent to the east, West Sussex to the south, Hampshire to the west, Berkshire to the north-west, and Greater London to the north-east.
With about 1.2 million people, Surrey is the twelfth most populous English county, the third most populous home county, after Kent and Essex, and the third most populous in the South East, after Hampshire and Kent.
Guildford is popularly regarded as the county town, although Surrey County Council is based extraterritorially at Kingston upon Thames.
Surrey is divided into eleven districts: Elmbridge, Epsom and Ewell, Guildford, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath, Tandridge, Waverley, and Woking.
The London boroughs of Lambeth, Southwark, Wandsworth, and parts of Lewisham and Bromley were in Surrey until 1889, as were Croydon, Kingston upon Thames, Merton, Sutton and the part of Richmond upon Thames on the right bank of the River Thames until 1965, when they were absorbed into Greater London, and the county extended north of the Thames by the addition of Spelthorne, as a result of the dissolution of Middlesex.
Surrey is a wealthy county due to economic, aesthetic, conservation and logistical factors. It has the highest GDP per capita of any English county, some of the highest property values outside Inner London, and also the highest cost of living outside of the capital.
Surrey has the highest proportion of woodland of counties in England. It has large protected green spaces (such as the North Downs, Greensand Ridge and related Surrey Hills AONB and royal landscapes adjoin it — Windsor Great Park and Bushy Park near the River Thames). It has four horse racing courses, and golf courses including international competition venue Wentworth.
Surrey is close to Heathrow and Gatwick airports and the M25, M3 and M23 motorways and has frequent rail services to central London.
