Brangie Moon
I live on a beautiful property in North East Victoria named after an Aboriginal man. This was pretty much all we knew until we were contacted by a descendent of Brangie in 2015. This started a journey of discovery, some good, a lot bad, about what happened to the Aboriginal people in this area. I discovered a double-sided book at the Wangaratta Visitor Information Centre, one side by Freddie Dowling – “No more the Valley rings with Koorie Laughter” which is a very personal & harrowing tale of what happened to his ancestors when white man arrived in the area. The other side is by Wendy Mitchell “Corroboree or War Party, the last dance of the Wangaratta Pangerang” & tells the same story through all the official documentation available. Reading these brilliant books inspired this song.
There were once dingoes in this area, along with emu & many other native animals now long gone, who (just like the Traditional Owners) were either hunted to extinction, or forced to move on because their food sources had disappeared due to white settlement. I wrote this song using the red dog (dingo) howling at the moon to signify the despair, anguish and pain felt by the people who were forced from their homelands that their spirits and entire existence depended on. A symbol for all the loss & in the hope that we will never forget the Aboriginal people and the sacrifices they were forced to make in forsaking their homeland. The story of their ownership of that land is told in every scar tree, rock pool & painting & though some have been destroyed, many still remain.
Squatters invaded the Pangerang Nation's 50,000 year old traditional lands in 1837 & took them for themselves which meant the entire Indigenous way of life, culture & existence was destroyed forever. Resistance was met with murder, bashings, rape, child stealing, and later, removal to missions. Those who didn’t meet this fate had to comply for their safety & survival & live surrounded by strangers whose constant presence was a reminder of all they had lost. This scenario was repeated Australia wide.
When you love your country you have a duty to speak out when you believe it has done the wrong thing. How can we continually fail to imagine these crimes being perpetrated on us? Their 50,000 years here has drenched the land with their presence & spirit. Our opportunity is to embrace & rejoice in their history & culture which can only make us all the richer.
Except for a few of my own, the pictures I have used are from the internet. If anyone objects to the use of an image they own, please contact me to have it removed.
Should you like this song and wish to perform or record it, I would be honoured and ask only that any royalties earned be donated to an Indigenous cause of your choosing.
Thank you for listening & watching.
