Warburton Redwood Forest, Victoria, Australia - A Day Trip From Melbourne
About one and half hours drive from Melbourne is the Warburton Redwood Forest at Cement Creek. It is one of two Redwood, or Sequoia, Forests in Australia. Both are within 3 hours drive of Melbourne however this one is the closest. This plantation of redwoods is to the east of Melbourne in the beautiful Yarra Ranges - the source of the Yarra River - and just a few kilometres outside of the lovely little town of Warburton.
The redwood forest is an easy day trip from Melbourne. Families will love running between the giant trees and checking out the huge bird nests. Apparently it has become a thing to twist branches into giant nests. There couldn't really be birds here this size could there? :)
Mount Donna Buang isn't far away and is the closest snow play area to Melbourne.

Warburton Waterwheel
Another JT musical scribble - Warburton Waterwheel.
Warburton, Victoria was the last stop Joyce and I made on our Australia trip, visiting an old friend of mine from university days - James McEwan, and his wife Lavinia - - and this tune is for them.
Warburton Waterwheel is the town Tourist Information Center but it's more than that. It's also an outlet for local arts and crafts and has a gallery for exhibitions by local artists, including Jim and Lavinia.
Coincidentally, Warburton is where Alasdair Fraser, in conjunction with Judy Turner and the Melbourne Scottish Fiddle Club, holds the annual Stringmania fiddle camp, so if you need an excuse to visit Warburton at a very pleasant time of year, there it is.
Warburton Waterwheel Visitor Information Centre
Our Warburton Waterwheel Visitor Information Centre is made possible through the support of volunteers who give their time to make this brilliant facility the pivotal point of interest for tourists and locals alike.
Our Warburton and Yarra Junction Community Bank® branches proudly support the Warburton Visitor Information Centre and celebrate the commitment of its volunteers.

Mount Donna Buang Snow⛄️Man time in Oz???????? Warburton
The closest snow to Melbourne can usually be found in Winter on the summit of Mt Donna Buang, near Warburton and just 70 km east of Melbourne. For daily snow updates (during snow season) check Warburton info page on Facebook.
With free access to the mountain (yes that’s right no charge!) Mt Donna is the perfect place for families to enjoy a low or no-cost snow experience and is especially popular for first time snow outings.
The pretty village of Warburton lies at the base of Mt Donna Buang and there are plenty of cafes and restaurants to fill hungry tummies with a variety of delicious meals and snacks. On weekends you will also find a food van on the mountain has plenty to tempt you with hot chips, hot chocolates and other popular ‘snow’ treats.
The trip up the Mt Donna Buang is approximately 17 km and there is generally no need for chains; however, on busy days travellers may need to be prepared to wait for access and depending on conditions there may be restrictions in place (and snow clearing each morning) – Parks Victoria and VicRoads are handy information sources on the day. Your patience will ensure everyone has a great time.
Essential snow updates can be found each morning on the Visit Warburton – The Waterwheel Facebook page – the official site for Warburton Valley - so be sure to like the page to stay in the loop.
Snow falls can be generous but at times unpredictable so always check Visit Warburton.com.au or Facebook page before you set off. You can also pop into our Visitor Information Centre - The Waterwheel - on the main street of Warburton to chat to one of our volunteers and pick up some maps.
Once on the snow-capped mountain there is a wonderful toboggan slope (you can hire toboggans in the township of Warburton and on the summit) and an excellent climbing tower with views all the way back to Melbourne on a clear day. Children and families will enjoy the wide open spaces to make snowmen and have a picnic.
For the adventurous at heart there are several walking tracks (but be sure to be safe and let people know where you are going) and for cycling enthusiasts check in with Doug at Cog Bike Shop for super snow cycling experiences.closest snow to Melbourne, Mt Donna Buang, Warburton Valley, snow updates, cheap family snow experience.

The Story of Annie Yoffa
Dr Annie Yoffa (c1891-1959), psychiatrist and surgeon
World traveller, surgeon, psychiatrist, philosopher, published author, student of Freud and the first woman to hike the Warburton to Walhalla trail across the Victorian Baw Baw Ranges in 1929, unaccompanied. Dr Annie Yoffa was a unique trailblazer who devoted her life to the study of science. Her last days were spent living in solitude, in the Dandenong Ranges, before being brutally murdered by a stranger. Sadly, her death is the thing that she is most remembered for, until now.
--------------
Dr Annie Yoffa was a world traveller, surgeon, psychiatrist, philosopher, published writer and student of Freud. She was also the first woman to hike the Warburton to Walhalla trail, across the Victorian Baw Baw Ranges, unaccompanied in 1929. Her experiences during the hike were so transformational that she published a book about it. In her author’s note, she goes on to explain:
The reader will soon realise that the author, not because but rather in spite of the sensational and personal elements, was impelled to perpetuate in book form the rare if not unique experiences, even to the point of accepting the inevitable and bringing out a private publication. (Yoffa, 1932)
The Real Thing; an adventure in the Australian Bush (1929) is a beautifully written and wondrous tale of adventure (and sometimes misadventure). Annie’s description of Victoria’s Yarra Ranges, Baw Baw Ranges and Gippsland Ranges are breathtaking. She writes in a way that allows the reader to visualise canopies of majestic mountain ash, the morning mist flowing like a river on the horizon and even the weathered faces of the myriad characters she meets along the way.
The story of her intrepid journey paints a picture of an era in Victorian history that is long gone. Long gone too is a lot of the original trail. It now lies blanketed by the waters of the Upper Yarra Reservoir which was completed in 1957. Also covered by this vast body of water is the site of the once popular guesthouse, McVeigh’s hotel. McVeigh’s was often the first port of call for walkers about to tackle the trail and where Annie stayed her first night. Interestingly, the original waterwheel that was part of McVeigh’s hotel survived and is permanently on display at the local Warburton tourism centre The Waterwheel.
There is currently a push to reopen the Warburton to Walhalla trail – as close to it as possible. The new route would go through Noojee, via Toorongo Falls, over Mount Baw Baw and on to Walhalla. Local community groups and organisations in the region have joined forces to lobby for a world class walking track to lure visitors and hikers to the area, promoting ecotourism and celebrating the wonders of the natural environment.
Annie was a unique trailblazer. She devoted her life to the study of science. She bought land in the Dandenong Ranges solely for the purpose of exploring the connection between life, nature and the universe. It was here that Annie was brutally murdered, in 1959, by Victor Jones, a man she did not know. After her death, Annie’s brother told the media that she had planned to give up her self-imposed, solitary life and to publish her findings in her study of psycho-dynamics.
We will never read these discoveries. Instead, a quick web search will produce a collection of newspaper articles surrounding her untimely and shocking death. Reassuringly, the search also uncovers her book which can easily be reserved to read at the State Library of Victoria. It is this story, or rather, this marvelous work of literature that defines how we remember her.

PIP COURTNEY, PRESENTER: 20 years ago, Nigel Tomlin retired to his family farm in Tasmania's picturesque Derwent Valley. But rather than opt for the quiet life, he came up with an unusual way to spend his retirement. With the help of his son, Nigel Tomlin built his own hydroelectricity scheme and in the next two months hopes to supply power to around 500 local homes, as Fiona Breen reports.
