Larkings Falls in the Warby Ovens National Park
Larkings Falls (as I have named them) are a group of waterfalls cascading water from the Warby Ovens National Park and down into the lower reaches of the Ovens Valley.
They are in a remote section of the Warby Ovens National Park and access is through private property, which just happens to have been owned by friends of my father, the Larkings family until recently.
Access to Larkings Falls is possible via a considerable amount of off track walking in the Warby Ovens National Park, however hikers would need to have a decent level of local knowledge of Warby Ovens National Park in order to know hoe to get there, and how to find the spectacular Larkings Falls.
I feel privileged to have been able to access Larkings Falls in the Warby Ovens National Park prior to the Larkings Family selling the property.
An unnamed spectacular waterfall in the Warby Ovens National Park
WOW....this spectacular gorge was amazing. It is a series of waterfalls and cascades with spectacular scenery that is not marked on a map or signposted. I found it purely by chance while exploring a section of the Warby Ranges near Wangaratta that I am not overly familiar with.

pine gully falls, warby ranges, wangaratta
I have not seen Pine Gully Falls look this good for quite a few years.
The carpark to Pine Gully Falls is about 10 minutes from Wangaratta in the Warby Ovens National Park.
The main waterfall itself is about a 10-15 minute walk along a well graded walking track.
The best time of the year to visit this area is winter and spring as the creek is only seasonal and usually dries up by about the middle of spring.

warby falls bushwalking track warby ranges
Warby Falls is a less frequently visited section of the Warby Ranges National Park. It's a delightful walk and can be completed as a loop such as in this video, or a 1 way trip, and can be walked from top to bottom for those who do not have enough confidence to walk up the hill. A bushwalk that I highly recommend.

Shepparton's Victoria Park Lake clean up March 2017
For details, plus more local info, first, free and from the source, click to
Greater Shepparton City Council will commence the work of ribbon weed cutting next week at the waterbody of the Victoria Park Lake for routine vegetation maintenance.
The works will run from Monday 27 March to Friday 31 March between 6am to 6pm. During this time, the Lake will be closed for all public use including boating and swimming, to ensure the maintenance takes place both effectively and safely. Other surrounding grassed areas will still be open and not affected by the works.
The process involves use of an aquatic harvester boat, which cuts the plant below the surface and through use of a conveyor stores the cut material on board for later disposal. The boat will be on the Lake for five days, limiting the amount of plant growing near the surface, pieces breaking off, washing up on banks and floating on the surface within the recreational activity areas.
Greater Shepparton City Council’s Manager Parks, Sport and Recreation Heath Chasemore outlined that the works are part of regular routine maintenance of the area.
“Council will ensure that the works are completed with a high standard and that fish and animals living in the lake won’t be harmed.
“Ribbon weed will remain in the wetland and other areas for its water treatment properties and animal habitat,” said Mr Chasemore.

Camping with kangaroos
There's something special about going camping and waking up to the sight of Kangaroos in your campsite. Last night I went camping, leaving my fishing rods at home while I enjoyed a lovely cool summers evening under the stars.
Having just bought myself some new camping equipment, I intend to do a lot more camping from now on. I will be camping and fishing at the same time, and camping away from fishing spots such as this camp last night.
This campsite is called Whenams Camp and is in the Warby Ranges section of the Warby Ovens National Park just west of Wangaratta.

Re snagging, Ovens River Macquarie Perch Project
These snags you see here were placed at upstream of Wangaratta last week and will assist in a host of activities aimed at re-establishing Macquarie Perch in the Ovens River.
Snags (in stream woody habitat) provide habitat (shelter and additional food) for native fish and help to improve breeding which will assist in sustaining wild populations. Historically de-snagging removed huge volumes of habitat from the Ovens.
Re-snagging along with fencing off stock access to the river; an improved fish way next to the Wangaratta weir; aquatic and riparian weed control, river bank revegetation; pest control and restocking of threatened native species by hatchery production and translocations aims to restore the native fish balance. These re-snagging activities are funded by the Victorian Government's Threatened Species Protection Initiative (TSPI).
The five-year Macquarie Perch re-establishment project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government, recreational fishing licence fees and the Target One Million Plan and the Australian Government's National Landcare Programme in collaboration with the North East Catchment Management Authority.
Wangaratta Rainstorm - 10 Jan 11
A fierce rainstorm which hit the North-East Victorian city of Wangaratta on January 10th, 2011. I was up here on work, at the time, and it surprised everybody after, earlier in the day, it had been beautiful and sunny. This caused the Ovens River to break it's banks for the next two days.
