Wasgamuwa National Park, Sri Lanka.
Wasgamuwa National Park (Wasgomuwa) is located in the districts of Matale and Polonnaruwa at a distance of 225 km away from Colombo. The nearest large town is Polonnaruwa, 10 km from the northern boundary.
Reaching Wasgamuwa National Park (Wasgomuwa)
The entrance to Wasgamuwa National Park is at Handungamuwa. The park can be conveniently reached from several tourist attractions.
From Kandy: Kandy, Hasalaka and Hettipola.Approximately 50km northeast of Kandy.Turn off at Hasalaka on the Kandy-Mahiyangana road and proceed via Wilgamuwa upto Wasgamuwa. Visitors from Matale and Polonnaruwa areas can reach Wasgomuwa via Laggala and Wilgamuwa. The Wilgamuwa Japan Bridge provides the easy access to visitors coming from the Mahaweli system-C.

The setting and terrain at Wasgamuwa National Park
Wasgamuwa National Park (Wasgomuwa) spanning over 36,900 hectares is bordered by River Mahaweli Ganga and River Amban Ganga in east and west. The altitude varies from over 500m at the Sudu kanda hill to just 76m along the Mahaweli Ganga. The combination of a number of small reservoirs and Sudu kanda mountain range affords fine trekking opportunities for keen hikers.
Tropical dry mixed evergreen forest predominates, characterized by tall trees: Weera (Drypetes sepiaria), Palu (Manikkara hexandra), Wa ( Cassia roxburghii) Ehala (C. Fistula), Buruta (Satin), Chloroxylon Swietenia, Velang (Pterospermum canescens), the endemic Galsiyambala (Dialium ovoideum), Milla (Vitaex Pinanata) and Kaluwara (ebony) (Diospyros Ebenum).
Wasgamuwa National Park's (Wasgomuwa) climatic conditions are that of the dry zone. Rain fall is mainly with the northeast monsoon (Maha) in October-February. Inter-monsoon rains occur in March-May. Annual rainfall increases from about 1,750 mm in the north to 2,250 mm in the south. Mean annual temperature is around 27 centigrade.
Wildlife at Wasgamuwa National Park
The center of the attraction is herds of Elephants up to 150. The best time to enjoy the sight of large herds is during November to May. In the rest of the year the elephants tend to migrate to nearby Minneriya and Kaudulla National Parks.
Other wildlife includes Purple faced langur monkeys, wild boar, sambar and spotted deer, buffalo and rarely sighted leopards and sloth bears.Among the reptiles are water monitor, mugger crocodile, estuarine crocodile and python (Python Molurus).
Birdlife at Wasgamuwa National Park
Of the 143 species of birds reported at Wasgamuwa National Park (Wasgomuwa) are endemic Red-faced malkoha and Ceylon jungle fowl are common sight in the park. Among the bird populations are Sri Lanka Trogon, racquet tailed drongo, endemic yellow fronted barbet, endemic Sri Lanka spurfowl, white necked stork and lesser adjutant stork.
Ruins of ancient Buddhist temple at Buduruwayaya
Remains of a number of small rainwater reservoirs and ruins of temples reveal that the region of Wasgamuwa National Park (Wasgomuwa), was once home to prosperous villages. The ruins estimated to be about 1800 years old features a reclining Buddha statue at Buduruwayaya. Ruins of a palace with stone pillars are found in an island in a canal known as Kalinga Yoda Ela built by King Parakrambahu the great in the twelfth century.
Accomodation within the Wasgamuwa National Park
Within Wasgamuwa National Park(Wasgomuwa) are three wildlife bungalows at Kadurupitiya, Mahaweli and Wawul Ebe. And outside of the park are two villas: Gale Bugalow and Angammedille. Within the park are five campsites: Mahaweli Ganga 1 & 2, Medapitiya, Ulpath Hatha and Wawul Ebe.

The Bungalow is located in a serene natural setting bordering the main access road to the park and in close proximity to the Park Entrance. (In fact the Park Gate can be seen from the Bungalow).It is a 3 double roomed eco friendly holiday bungalow where open type accommodation is also possible.It makes the bungalow to accommodate a group of 20-25 using both indoor and open type facilities. The approach to the bungalow can be done from 3 main routes but comming through Riverston from Matale side is the best one for a nature traveller to explore the magnificient scheneries of nature.

It has 2 attached bathrooms and 3 semi attached bathrooms, the TV Lounge and the kitchen. The Bungalow has facilities to accommodate around 20 visitors at a time.
:: The Eco House is built with traditional materials and the roof covered with 'ILUK'.It has 3 double bedrooms with sleeping facilities for 12 pax and attached toilets and open type showers/bathrooms. Has verandas around with 'pilas' to sit and relax the way you prefer with your friends and family. It is designed to create a sensation of Eco Living.
::The Tree House (Attalaya) is built on a 'KON' tree within the premises. It is solidly built in the wilderness and has space for 6-8 pax to sleep inside. It is located on an Elephant Corridor and one would occasionally be lucky enough to see elephants walking beneath in the night. It has been a special attraction among the visitors to the Bungalows and is in demand as a Camping Site among wildlife lovers to Wasgamuwa seeking an experience with adventure with open fires and BBQs.

Safari Wild life safaris can be organized to the Wasgamauwa National Park which is just 200 m to its entrance from the Bungalow.
1Garden The bungalow is surrounded by a garden with huge trees which shelters the whole surrounding of the bungalow.Behind the bungalow is a mini jugle of its own where a path of elephants is located.
Tree House A tree house is there just above the path of elephants and is purposely made for exploring the elephant walks in the night

Angammedilla National Park
Angammedilla National Park is one of the new national parks in Sri Lanka. Originally Angammedilla was a forest reserve within the Minneriya-Girithale Sanctuary. Angammedilla also secures the drainage basins of Minneriya and Girithale irrigation tanks, water sources in Sudu Kanda (Sinhala for White hill) and habitats and wildlife of the adjacent forests. It is located 225 kilometres away from Colombo in Polonnaruwa District.
Amban river which is sourced by Sudu Kanda forms the southern border of the park. A mountain range stretches across the park from Girithale to Minneriya. In the drought period the park is very dry. In the rainy season, mountainous area receives more rainfall than the plains. Since a mix wet and dry climate persists in the park the vegetation is a mix of wet zone and dry zone plants.
In the ancient times water has irrigated from Amban river to Parakrama Samudra in a canal done in stone. The rocky wall of the canal called royal wall by the villagers.
Sri Lankan elephant, Sri Lankan sambar deer, Indian muntjac, Sri Lankan axis deer, water buffalo, wild boar, and peafowl are common within the park. However Sri Lanka leopard, sloth bear, grizzled giant squirrel and Sri Lanka junglefowl are sometimes seen. The primate species red slender loris, tufted gray langur, and purple-faced langur are seen also.

Built in the 1870's as a circuit Bungalow for British Government Agents (GA), with the first British GA occupant being with Mr. W. Harington, the Polonnaruwa Rest House was carefully refurbished in the style of the early 1950's, whilst retaining its colonial charm, after been taken over by the then Ceylon Tourist Bureau in 1954 and thereafter by Ceylon Hotels Corporation (CHC) in 1968..

The cycle safaris to the Polonnaruwa ancient ruins, organised by the Rest House on a regular basis, also prove to be quite an attraction. The Rest House has also becomes an ideal location for boating and fishing or a break in journey before driving on to Kandy. A drive to the east will take you to the hot & cold springs of Maduru Oya, and to the west side of the Minneriya Tank. Wild life enthusiasts can make a visit to the Wasgamuwa National Park, south of the Rest House.
