AMAZING UNKNOWN JEWEL OF IPOH, Tibetan Buddhist Temple, IN DEPTH REVIEW
Tibetan Buddhism is the body of Buddhist doctrine and institutions characteristic of Tibet, the regions surrounding the Himalayas and much of Central Asia. Religious texts and commentaries comprise the Tibetan Buddhist canon, such that Tibetan is a spiritual language of these areas.
Tibetan Buddhism derives from the latest stages of Indian Buddhism and preserves the Tantric status quo of eighth-century India.[1] Tibetan Buddhism aspires to Buddhahood or rainbow body.[2]
The number of its adherents is estimated to be between ten and twenty million.[3] Among its prominent exponents is the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet.

Day of Buddha, Wesak Day 2016, Featuring Mekprasit Buddhist Temple
Vesākha (Pali; Sanskrit: Vaiśākha), also known as Buddha Purnima and Buddha Day, is a holiday observed traditionally by Buddhists on different days in India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Tibet, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Myanmar and in other places all over the world.[4][5] Sometimes informally called Buddha's Birthday, it actually commemorates the birth, enlightenment (nirvāna), and death (Parinirvāna) of Gautama Buddha in the Theravada or southern tradition
The decision to agree to celebrate Vesākha as the Buddha’s birthday was formalized at the first conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists held in Sri Lanka in 1950, although festivals at this time in the Buddhist world are a centuries-old tradition. The resolution that was adopted at the World Conference reads as follows:
That this Conference of the World Fellowship of Buddhists, while recording its appreciation of the gracious act of His Majesty, the Maharaja of Nepal in making the full-moon day of Vesak a Public Holiday in Nepal, earnestly requests the Heads of Governments of all countries in which large or small number of Buddhists are to be found, to take steps to make the full-moon day in the month of May a Public Holiday in honour of the Buddha, who is universally acclaimed as one of the greatest benefactors of Humanity.[7]
On Vesākha Day, Buddhists all over the world commemorate events of significance to Buddhists of all traditions: The birth, enlightenment and the passing away of Gautama Buddha. As Buddhism spread from India it was assimilated into many foreign cultures, and consequently Vesākha is celebrated in many different ways all over the world. In India, Vaishakh Purnima day is also known as Buddha Jayanti day and has been traditionally accepted as Buddha's birth day.
In 1999, the United Nations resolved to internationally observe the day of Vesak at its headquarters and offices.[8]
The name of the observance is derived from the Pali term vesākha or Sanskrit vaiśākha, which is the name of the lunar month in the Hindu calendar falling in April–May (see Vaisakha).[9] In Mahayana Buddhist traditions, the holiday is known by its Sanskrit name (Vaiśākha) and derived variants of it. Local renditions of the name vary by language, including:
The celebration of Vesākha
May 2007 just had two full moon days the 1st and the 31st. Some countries (including Sri Lanka, Cambodia and Malaysia) celebrated Vesākha on the 1st, while others (Thailand, Singapore) celebrated the holiday on the 31st due to different local lunar observance. This difference also manifests in the observance of other Buddhist holidays, which are traditionally observed at the local full moon.
Likewise, in 2012, Vesak or the birth anniversary of the Buddha was observed on 28 April in Hong Kong and Taiwan, on 5 May in Sri Lanka, on 6 May in India, on 28 May in South Korea and on 4 June in Thailand. (In 1999 the Taiwanese government set Buddha's birthday as the second Sunday of May, the same date as Mother's Day.[10][11]). In 2014, Vesak is celebrated on 13 May in Myanmar, Singapore and Thailand while it is observed on 15 May in Indonesia.
On Vesākha day, devout Buddhists and followers alike are expected and requested to assemble in their various temples before dawn for the ceremonial, and honorable, hoisting of the Buddhist flag and the singing of hymns in praise of the holy triple gem: The Buddha, The Dharma (his teachings), and The Sangha (his disciples). Devotees may bring simple offerings of flowers, candles and joss-sticks to lay at the feet of their teacher. These symbolic offerings are to remind followers that just as the beautiful flowers would wither away after a short while and the candles and joss-sticks would soon burn out, so too is life subject to decay and destruction. Devotees are enjoined to make a special effort to refrain from killing of any kind. They are encouraged to partake of vegetarian food for the day. In some countries, notably Sri Lanka, two days are set aside for the celebration of Vesākha and all liquor shops and slaughter houses are closed by government decree during the two days. Also birds, insects and animals are released by the thousands in what is known as a 'symbolic act of liberation'; of giving freedom to those who are in captivity, imprisoned, or tortured against their will.[citation needed] Some devout Buddhists will wear a simple white dress and spend the whole day in temples with renewed determination to observe the eight Precepts.

Sand Mandala for Wesak Celebration, Malaysia 2016
In Tibetan Buddhism, sand mandalas are used as a tool for consecrating the Earth and its inhabitants. In general, all mandalas have outer, inner and secret meanings.
On the outer level, they represent the world in its divine form. On the inner level, they represent a map by which the ordinary human mind is transformed into an enlightened mind. And on the secret level, they depict the primordially perfect balance of the subtle energies of the body and the clear light dimension of the mind.
The creation of a sand mandala is said to affect purification and healing on all three levels.
Hence, it is said that whenever a sand mandala is created all sentient beings and its surrounding environment are blessed and upon seeing the sand mandala, one is left with positive imprints for one's future enlightenment.
Inconjucntion with Selangor State Level Wesak Celebration 2016, Vajrayana Buddhist Council of Malaysia (VBCM) invited a group of venerables from Denma Khangtsen Education Society, Drepung Loseling, India, to construct a sand manadala in 3 different venues in Kuala Lumpur.
1) Sakyamuni Dharma Centre (May 22-27)
2) Empire Shopping Gallery (May 28 -June 5)
3) Sri Lanka Buddhist Temple, Sentul (June 6 - 12)
It takes about 5 days for the mandala to be constructed. After that, a consecration ceremony is held whereby the monks chant prayers and pujas. The public is then allowed to view the mandala displayed in a glasscover. On the final day, the mandala is dissolved amidst prayers and blessings and the coloured sand is subsequently returned back to mother earth by dispersing them in a river that carried them to open sea. A certain portion of the blessed sand is kept in small vials and distributed to donors who have made contributions to the event and the funds for building a new prayer hall, dormitory rooms and facilities for the monks of Drepung Loseling Monastic University, India.
After a week of hardwork, the first mandala was completed at 11am, Friday 27 May 2016. Soon after this at about 5pm, the sangha members, presided by His Eminence Sharpa Choeje Rinpoche, performed the consecration and dissolution puja.
It is indeed hard for some of us to see such a beautiful piece of art being dismantled before our eyes. but i guess this is also the teaching of the Buddha, things no matter how beautiful it may seems are impermanent, and everything that exists has a beginning, a middle and an end.....
