Cambodian Genocide memorial in Battambang - the Well of shadows (Wat Somrog Knong)
Another memorial in Battambang about the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge located in the pagoda Somrog Knong. The main pagoda is close to the main road but the memorial is in the interior towards the back. Four-sided structure made of cement, keeping hundreds of bones and skulls.
Inscriptions around the memorial indicate how the Khmer Rouge killed their victims. Examples of inscriptions:
The torturers split open their victims chests, abdoments to remove their livers and cannibalise their organs
The children are killed while their parents are forced to watch before they are also killed
Also on one side of the monument is the following text:
In May 1976, the Khmer Rouge seized the Buddhist temple Wat Somrong Knong, turning it into a prison, and the surrounding area turned into a killing field where 10,008 people were put to death. The prison warden was Son, alias Sot, the executioners were Korlot and Plet. In 1977, Yom became the warden, under whose administration cannibalism was introduced. Poisonous snakes were used to terrify and kill their prisoners, while others had their skulls or chests split open with hoes. This monument portrays still other torturers used by the Khmer Rouge to subjugate district 41 and region 4.
The full extent of Cambodia's tragedy will never be known. The remains of some of the victims of this genocide may never be recovered, nor their murderers identified. But, the gentle and forgiving Khmer, an energetic and optimistic people, will now walk confidently though the well of shadows to reclaim their ancient culture, and restore this beautiful land to become again, the legendary paradise of celestial Apsara's.
A sad period between 1975-1979 were thousands of people were butchered in the area as in the rest of the country.

Travel Around Battambang Province
We just left Soheu Junior High School, the place we had breakfast heading to the Ek Phnom District and traveling along the stream. We came across the Khmer Cheese Market but we didn't stop. We bought organic guavas from a lady and continued to Samrong Khnong Pagoda and temple. I flew my drone capturing this pagoda and ancient temple which was a prison during the Pol Pot regime. We left Samrong Knong Pagoda to Keo Pagoda to see the temple and big fishes in pond. We feed them with bread and enjoy them swimming around. We visited a few more places and keep traveling around Battambang Province just to see any new places and ask them for information for boat ride to Bak Prea in Rainy season.
