WaterRock Knob Trail - Hiking - Blue Ridge Parkway North Carolina
Things to do in Maggie Valley and Cherokee, North Carolina. This is a fairly strenuous hike (especially for flatlanders), but is not dangerous. It is uphill and then downhill on the way back. There are some other trails to explore, but the rain chased us away. It really came down as we were leaving. There are restrooms and a gift shop with souvenirs and refreshments at this park as well.

Hike to Waterrock Knob and Historic Plane Crash (Blue Ridge Parkway)
On this trip, we hiked the Waterrock Knob trail to Browning Knob and to the site of an old Cessna 414 plane crash from 1983. This trail is located off the Blue Ridge Parkway at mile 451.2 marker along the portion near Maggie Valley.
The story of the old plane crash goes that on November 24, 1983, a Cessna 414 was flying from West Chicago to the Jackson County Airport here in the NC mountains. It crashed a little before 6pm at about 6,000 feet. Neither the pilot nor passenger survived. The cause of the crash was determined to be a combination of weather conditions/poor visibility and alcohol. The plane could have made it over the mountain if it had just been about 150 feet higher. - (lilblueboo.com)

Short, partially paved hike along the Blue Ridge Parkway near Cherokee, NC and the end of the parkway. Only half a mile in length, the trail climbs 450 feet. As you can see, it was a foggy day when this video was shot, however the potential for great views is there...

We found Airplane Wreckage in the Smoky Mountains - Water rock knob trail
We searched deep into the blue ridge mountains to find this airplane. It is moving to see something like this in the woods just left to be forgotten. Please consider subscribing and leave a like!
INSTRUCTIONS TO FIND THE AIRPLANE= Once you get on water rock knob trail, make your way to the top, then cut onto the trail to your left before going up the last set of rock stairs. The next .7 of a mile is browning knob trail. It is very difficult with a lot of steep climbing and decending. Once you find yourself in an opening there will be a very noticeable trail to the left through the woods. Go down that trail and about .05 of a mile is how for the wrecked airplane will be.

Maggie Valley - onX Public Access Project
Public land east of the Mississippi River, and getting access to it or private land is challenging at best.
Take North Carolina as an example, where less than eight percent of its 34 million acres is federally owned, and that’s actually much better than most nearby states.
In 2001, the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation assisted with the successful restoration of wild elk into Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
Knowing elk need room to roam, RMEF and its partners since purchased five different properties from willing landowners adjacent to the park totaling 1,925 acres that are now called the William H. Silver Game Lands. Plus, RMEF provided significant grant funding since then to enhance habitat there for elk and other wildlife.
This area surrounding Great Smoky Mountains has one of the highest visitation rates in the nation, and the potential for development is high. As a result, RMEF and partners continue efforts to secure additional public access opportunities.
Also, in early 2019, the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission held a series of public meetings that included the possibility of establishing an in-state elk hunt down the road.
When that does happen, hunters will have increased access opportunities.
So far, RMEF opened or improved access to more than 1.2 million acres across 23 states.
Opening and improving public access is key to RMEF’s conservation work.
To learn more about the sites and boundaries of RMEF access projects near you or your favorite hunting area, turn on the RMEF layer in the onX Hunt App.
Plus, use the code R-M-E-F when you sign up for your new onX subscription to receive a 20 percent discount, and a portion of the proceeds benefit RMEF’s conservation mission.
