ALCo DL537 A.9105 on Special Transfer at Korinth-Athens Old Line. (18/03/2011)
During the close down of the Peloponnesian metric gauge network, all MAN1 and MAN4 Dmus based at Kalamata Depot were led to Piraeus Central Depot (MPR) for protection. This is the last MAN4/IC Dmu that ran on the ''Peloponnesian rails'' in 2011. ALCo DL537 A.9105 was mobilised to transfer ALCo A.9107 (broken down since 2010) and MAN4 6504/5504/1504 from Kalamata to Aghii Anargiri station (northwest suburb of Athens - where the metric gauge line stops since 2005.) and then get to MPR by truck, following the other 18 units. ''Chasing'' the train from Corinth canal's bridge at Isthmus until Elefsina where we embark on the railcar and reach Ag.Anargiri. Enjoy the route and the sound of Hellenic DL537.

A little yellow ball | Giorgos Lazaridis | TEDxKalamata
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Giorgos is here to try our limits. He will share with us, and make our minds think it carefully, how we define our lives, especially when there is a tipping point that can change the perpsective and mentality that we used to have, into a new way of thinking, a new way of living.
Giorgos Lazaridis, born on the 16 of August 1973 at Kalamata, is an Paralympic athlete. A car accident left him disabled at the age of 20, early 1993. It was not before the 2004 Paralympics that motivated him to take up tennis professionally. Meeting with Giorgos Kontos, the federal coach and Mr. Vazouras, the representative of wheelchair tennis for Greece, further encouraged him to chase his dream on professional tennis. After years of training with various coaches, Giorgos entered his first professional tournament at Sunderland, Great Britain, on March of 2005. Subsequently, Giorgos competed in numerous tournaments of regional and worldwide caliber, his finest moment being the Beijing Paralympics on 2008. His proximate goal is to participate at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics on 2016.

Trains at Eleftherochori region and Gorgopotamos viaduct, January 2015.
A cold winter morning at Mt.Ete, at southern Fthiotis. The rail pass of Bralos is full of winter's smells... the wet trees from the last night's rain, the wet ground... the fallen leaves. The only sounds come from the river that crosses Assopos gorge. The nature is quiet, she's like being sleeping. Suddenly, the metallic sound of the rails breaks the landscape's silence. The trains pass from the breathtaking slopes of the mountain. After some hours we leave behind the gorge and we reach another historic place, the viaduct of Gorgopotamos. The most known bridge of Hellas... on the many that were blown up during WW2. The valley of Spercheos is lost into the thick fog as the sun goes down behind the high mountaintops. Last train of the day, the local service between Lianokladi and Athens... the light is lost and the cold is coming again to joing the dark and hang the metal structures for another night...til' next morning's first light.

GREECE 2019 - Mr. Thomas H. Ahrens CEO of COMPO EXPERT Group on COMPO EXPERT & Keys My Crops
THOMAS H AHRENS
For me it's a great pleasure to be here in Greece, today, here in the Kalamata area in front of an Olive tree which is probably more than 200 years old (!!!) which leads me to update you on the vision of COMPO EXPERT.
“We want to be the BEST Specialty Fertilisers Company in the World”
that is linked to the special fertilization of crops such as the Olive crop we have here and is one of the “key crops” for us.
How can we achieve it?
We want to achieve it through our “crop approach”, that is a very crop specific and customer centric approach and we are just applying it here directly in Kalamata in olive oil manufacturer (Pertina Agricultural Union).
Our name is COMPO EXPERT but what does it mean?
For me “Expert” means that we identify opportunities in the market and along with our customers we deploy them.
We want to understand the business and the needs of our customer and we want to help our customers to solve the crop problems they have.
Because if you can show that you can solve their problems, they really regard you as an EXPERT which is what we want to be, the expert in the crop business.
Moreover, we want to design specific solutions for our customers and here our crop approach comes really into place. We are developing solutions for our customers and let's take an example here we are in the olive groves in the Kalamata area, here we are helping our customers to solve their problems and we will repeat and transfer this whole thing to other application areas, such as areas in Chile where you have very big olive trees manufacturers. One is for example ‘ACT Solutions” who is a customer of ours and this is an example of how we put our crop approach in action.
Last but not least you know that we have implemented a couple of years ago a special approach, we call it “KEYS My CROPS” which is a crop program and this is really an intercultural change process moving away from product lines, for example having only water soluble salts or having only NPK. Here now we want to give crop programs for our customers.
We do it by defining our target crops, so we have defined 10 target crops and on this target crops we are sharing the program solution, first within a region here in a EMEA and then we are extending this entire approach in other regions such as Asia and Latin America.
So now we have started in Europe because Europe is the spine of our business and we are rolling this “Keys My Crops’ approach out globally and I am personally particularly proud of what we have achieved so far, that a lot of examples what we were successful, we will continue with this approach and I am absolutely sure that we will strengthen our company our culture our values and this is where we stand for as COMPO EXPERT.

Entry:
Our short trip to the Towers of Mani
AREOPOLI - MANI
My husband has some acquaintances here who owe a hotel, so we have arranged to have this short trip here.
The hotel is called THE MAINI CASTLE and is situated in the heart of historic Mani, in AREOPOLI, which is approximately 3 hours from Athens. We are given a nice room, in this beautiful stone-built hotel group.
What we enjoy most is breakfast, which contains home made honey delicacies - everything home made is appreciated in hotels of course!
The owners have jars of the best quality of honey for somebody who wishes to buy some for his house.
The place here is unique as a starting point for different excursions like the Stone-Built-Tower Villages of Mani, the Monasteries of Byzantine MYSTRAS, famous and most popular MONEMVASIA, KARDAMILI, the cosmopolitan STOUPA, and even KALAMATA, and the Caves of DYROS.
It is here that we shall come again soon when we want to visit the above places. The owners of the hotel are kind and always helpful, and will guide tourists move about to different spots.
MANI is situated in the Southern part of PELOPONISOS
and it is full of rocks and Tall Towers.
These Towers here are Military hallmarks of a glorious era.
These fortifications are an expression of the fighting spirit of the
region and are to be found all over Mani.

120 years are completed from the inauguration of the unique Diakopto-Kalavrita rack railway. The construction of this special line began in 1889 by the Hellenic state and finished in 1895. The official opening of the first and only rack railway line decided to be the 10th of March 1896, two weeks before the first modern Olympic games. Since then the line only stopped its operation for 3 years between 2006 and 2009 for a general reconstruction and maintenance. The route starts from the seaside Diakopto and climbs in just 23 km to Kalavrita, reaching the altitude of 720m at Mt. Chelmos. This means that there are maximum inclinations of 17,5%. Vouraikos river that runs next to line offers the passenger a unique and unforgettable view. This year, in order to celebrate the 120 years, a festival was organized at the city of Kalavrita. For this celebration, the museum old lady DK8.001 hauled a special train between Kerpini and Kalavrita with the special guests and Hellenes railfans. DK8.001 was the first steam locomotive of the line which was built by the French Cail in 1891. For over 60 years se offered heer services to the line till se was replaced by Billard railcars in 1960s. Her first overhaul took place in 1996 due to the celebrations of 100 years of rack railway’s operation. Then she was reconstructed in 2015 and know she is capable of running in this beautiful route again. We all hope and dream to see the old lady running on regular base, every weekend, in order to more visitors would have the chance to see her and live the magic era of steam once again into the magnificent Vouraikos gorge.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos sends message as he’s spotted at airport ahead of Arsenal transfer
Sokratis Papastathopoulos has been spotted at Kalamata Airport in Greece ahead of his move to Arsenal. The 30-year-old Borussia Dortmund man is expected to be announced as Arsenal’s next signing imminently, with the Gunners reportedly agreeing a £17million deal this summer. Sokratis has already had a medical with Unai Emery’s side and will likely be unveiled in the coming days after he caught a flight to London on Saturday evening. Sport Sto Noto have published a photograph of Sokratis at the airport of his hometown, Kalamata, and claim the defender was accompanied by his wife Xanthippi on a British Airways flight. Sokratis also posted a picture on his Instagram page as he waved goodbye to the city where he was born. ‘Kalamata see you soon,’ he said. Sokratis is set to become Arsenal’s third signing of the summer after Stephan Lichtsteiner and Bernd Leno secured moves to north London. Sampdoria and Uruguay midfielder Lucas Torreira is also expected to join Sokratis at the club next week. Sokratis’ father revealed last month that his son had rejected the advances of Manchester United to join Arsenal. ‘There was interest from United but for July, he had to wait until July for United,’ Charalambos Papastathopoulos told Greek radio station Radio 24/7 88.6. ‘United have a very good relationship with Dortmund, the teams speak a lot, but Sokratis chose to go to Arsenal.’

Zoodles -2 Delicious Recipes!
Buy a Spiralizer here:
Print this recipe here:
For the Pesto Zoodles:
Serves 3-4:
4 zucchinis, spiralized
¼ cup spinach pesto
Salt and black pepper, to taste
2-3 tablespoons olive oil
Optional:
• Crushed red pepper flakes
• Grated parmesan cheese
• Cherry tomatoes, halved
Place a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat and add the oil. Sauté the zoodles in 3 batches cooking each batch no longer than 1 minute. Cooking them longer will release too much liquid and they will become mushy.
Transfer each batch to a bowl. Once they are all cooked, add them back to the pan along with the pesto and mix them together over medium heat for 1 more minute until the pesto is incorporated.
Serve topped with crushed red pepper flakes, parmesan cheese, and some cherry tomatoes. Grilled chicken or shrimp goes great with this dish. Any leftovers can be refrigerated. Enjoy!
Greek-Zoodle Salad
Serves 4-5:
4 zucchinis, spiralized
12 cherry tomatoes, halved
¼ onion, finely chopped
10 Kalamata olives, sliced
1/3 cup sliced bell peppers
4 ounces feta cheese, crumbled
2 tablespoons finely chopped mint
Salt and black pepper, to taste
For the vinaigrette:
1 lemon, juiced
¼ cup olive oil
1 garlic clove, minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Alternative dressing: tzatziki sauce
Place the zoodles in a large mixing bowl along with the tomatoes, onion, olives, feta, and bell peppers.
Whisk all of the vinaigrette ingredients together and pour over the salad. Toss to combine.
Add some salt and pepper along with the mint and toss to combine.
Serve immediately. This pairs well with grilled shrimp, chicken, and steak. Enjoy!
