A Walk Around Manitowoc - My Hometown
I can remember my mom taking me downtown on a Friday night or a weekend night back in the late 50's-early 60's, and the downtown was like Bedford Falls from It's A Wonderful Life or Santa Rosa from Hitchcock's Shadow Of A Doubt. A bustling downtown, with buses packed and crowded streets filled with townies burning holes in their pockets with Friday paychecks. At Christmas time the streets would all be lit up and decked out. It seemed like everyone went to church on Sundays or be considered an outcast. The top amount of tax dollars went into education, and I think it probably still does from the look of the schools. The Lake Michigan Car-ferry still comes in twice a day. When I lived there, several car ferries came in each day. Now its more of a tourist boat than an actual working train-car ferry shortening the trip around Lake Michigan. Ships are still made there but mostly Luxury yachts from Burger Boats. Now... the ship yards are making huge sky wind mills. The Aluminum company left town (they shall go nameless) in search of cheaper labor in Mexico. Large Cranes and hotel refrigerators are still made there, and I will come upon in my travels all over the world that reminds me of where I came and who I am. The Manitowoc I grew up with is slowly disappearing and being replaced by a new Manitowoc, mostly out by the freeway. I am almost positive old downtown Manitowoc will one day see another heyday. But as for now, commerce is out on the fringe of the city limits.
This film is about capturing that old Manitowoc before it's gone and something new takes its place. And it will, and its all good.
Manitowoc was a great place to grow up in.
My Crazy Wisconsin Accent (Accent tag)
A lot of people have been commenting on my accent, and asking where I'm from, so I decided to do the accent tag in order to talk a little bit about what makes my accent different. If you have been using my channel to learn English, this video will be really useful to you because it can help you understand some of the things that I say differently than other native speakers of English so you will be better informed about what English accent you want to try to learn. But even if you don't want to learn to speak with a Midwestern accent, this is still useful information because you will want to be able to at least understand people if they speak in this way.
Some things that are really common in the Wisconsin dialect are stretching out your O's, and raising your A's. Also, there is a lot of debate in my state about the words bubbler, drinking fountain, and water fountain.
Accents are something that is really interesting to me, so I would love to hear what you guys think about my accent and what your personal accent is like. Sometime in the near future I also might to an accent challenge in Spanish and in French if I can find those ones somewhere.

4. Nazca, Peru
Nazca is a city in Peru where, between 100 BC and 800 AD, the Nazca culture thrived. They’re famous for the drawings and giant works of art they did in the desert nearby. The thing is, the only way these enormous works of art can be seen in their entirety is from up high, and nobody can quite understand how they were made. There has been a long-held misconception that they can only be seen from aircraft, but they can also be viewed from hills and other high-up places nearby, but that still doesn’t explain just how they were mapped out so long ago. Not only are there many geometric figures drawn out there in the desert, there are a bunch of animals, and no one knows why they were created or what purpose they served. Some of the most famous of the works are the condor, the hummingbird, and the monkey, and the spiral tail of the monkey inspired the spiral in the P of the logo of Peru, which can be seen on all of its currency and anywhere else the logo is used.
3. Michigan Triangle
You’ve obviously heard of the Bermuda Triangle if you’re watching this video, but did you know that Lake Michigan in the United States has its own mysterious triangle as well? It’s true, and it’s known as the Michigan Triangle or the Lake Michigan Triangle and spans all the way from Ludington, Michigan to Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and Benton Harbor in the south. The whole mystery of the triangle gained attention in 1891 when a schooner called the Thomas Hume set sail across the great lake to pick up some lumber and was never seen again. It’s seven sailor crew just disappeared and no pieces of the schooner, nor any bodies, were ever found. Other ships and crews, as well as just crews, have just up and vanished inside the triangle. In one case, George R. Donner, the captain of a ship called O.M. McFarland, went into his cabin to rest, locked the door from the inside, and then went missing himself, never to be seen or heard from again. Northwest Orient Airlines flight 2501 disappeared from radar over the triangle, leading some to believe it crashed, but no part of the wreck, nor any of the 58 people on board were ever located. UFOs, time portals, and many other phenomena have been blamed for the mysteries, but to this day no one knows if it’s just coincidence or if there really is some strange, supernatural force behind the disappearances in the Michigan Triangle.
2. Racetrack Playa
This fantastic dry lake in Death Valley National Park in California is home to some of the most famous sailing stones in the world. What are sailing stones? They’re rocks that move across the ground and create tracks behind them, and they do so without any kind of human or animal intervention. Now, the moving stones at Racetrack Playa can’t really be explained by any sort of tilt of the ground or anything because the land here is incredibly flat, with the southern end of the playa being just 1.5 inches lower than the northern. They can’t be explained by water either, as it rains very little here—only 3 to 4 inches a year. The stones are typically syenite and dolomite, and they leave highly visible and traceable tracks as they move great distances across the surface of the playa, and scientists do think they’ve figured out the secret behind these stones’ incredible abilities. Ice sheets measuring just a few millimeters thick form over the surface of the playa and the stones are able to glide right over the surface of the ground on top of them at rates up to five meters per minute. To be honest, we were really hoping it was aliens.

US Navy’s $13 Billion Supercarrier to Begin Acceptance Trials in May
The U.S. Navy’s long-delayed nuclear-powered Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN-78), the lead of ship of the United States’ latest class of carriers, will begin acceptance trials this month, according to acting Navy Secretary Sean Stackley, USNI News reports.
The new carrier is slated to head to sea before May 29 for its acceptance trials. Last month, the ship successfully completed builder’s sea trials. The acceptance trials are conducted by the U.S. Navy’s Board of Inspection and Survey, whereas last month’s tests were overseen by Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuilding and the Navy’s CVN 78 Program Office, among others.
“Delivery, pending the results of acceptance trials, we expect to turn delivery around quickly after that,” Stackley said. “The crew is already onboard, operating and running the systems; she’s at the naval station; she’s loaded out; so the steps to go from acceptance trials to delivery, it’s going to be contingent on, what are the critical starred card type of deficiencies – if any – that are identified during acceptance trials.”

As See On The Rails Of The Blue Valley Railroad... A U.S. Navy Railroad Cannon!
This project was started by a friend in 2010 and was recently completed. It took over 800 hours to complete.
The U.S. Navy MKII Naval railroad gun was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1919. The gun barrel version is a MKVI which was 53.5' long with a 46.3 breach. The gross weight of the carriage gun mount was 305 tons and was test fired in August 1919. Using approximately 400 pounds (two bags) of powder, it fired a 1,400 pound projectile approximately 20 miles with a muzzle velocity of 2,700 feet per second. The barrel recoiled 44 and the rolling assembly was moved down the track 30 to 40 feet depending on the firing elevation. Two of these cannons were produced by Baldwin for the U.S. Navy.
This O-gauge model of the MKII was built out of 0.020 brass sheet with a barrel turned from a 1 aluminum rod. The model has a barrel slide assembly that lowers a scale 86 at a 45 degree angle for transport. This locks in place with two scale 10 pins located on either side just like the prototype. The recoil mechanism on the barrel is functional and will return the barrel to the home position after being recoiled a scale 44 backward. The breach block has threads taking about 1/8 turn to lock into the barrel and can be opened and closed to simulate loading and firing conditions. There is a wheel on either side that elevates the gun barrel to a maximum of 40 degrees by using a scratch built gear box through a screw rod assembly. All walkways, handrail chains, jib cranes, and I-beam trolley frames are removable for transport. The gun has 20 axles on four trucks with spring assembly detail. All 12 toolboxes, three on each of the four corners of the gun, are hinged and functional. Detailing on the front platform includes a winch with drive gears, compressor, motor, hydraulic piston controller for the slide assembly, and electrical box with conduit. Air tanks with regulator assemblies are located on the front side frame. Rubber hoses connect the truck assemblies to the main beam assembly.
The ammunition supply car directly behind the gun has a crane for moving projectiles and powder bags, which are kept on either side of the car, to the ammunition tray located on the gun. The projectile or powder bag is then moved forward on the trolley, hoisted up, and placed on the breach loading chute by the I-beam trolley for loading into the breach. Two jib cranes are provided on the rear corners for loading from the ground or another car in case it is not practicable to load from the rear of the mount.

The Main Secret of the Lake Michigan Triangle
It’s not so hard to imagine something mysterious like ships and planes vanishing in the infamous Bermuda Triangle. The ocean is big and full of wonders, after all. But what about, say, a lake? It’s not so absurd when we’re talking about one as huge as Lake Michigan. Yes, The Michigan Triangle is a thing, and it’s just as eerily inexplicable…
The triangle is situated in the lower half of the lake. It’s 16 times smaller than the Bermuda Triangle, but strange events happen here no less frequently, especially if you keep in mind the difference in size. Some witnesses report seeing a strange glow under the surface, others swear they saw a UFO in the skies over the lake, and so many just feel uneasy being there. So, you ready to dive in?

SUMMARY:
- The North American Great Lakes are all massive, and Lake Michigan itself is the 4th largest freshwater lake in the world.
- The triangle is situated in the lower half of the lake, with a corner at Manitowoc, Wisconsin and the other two at Ludington and Benton Harbor, Michigan.
- The first case goes way back to the 17th century, when the Great Lakes started to become a means of moving goods for trading.
- In August of 1679, a French ship called Le Griffon was sailing across the unchartered waters of the Great Lakes. But when she made it to Lake Michigan, Le Griffon… just vanished.
- The cause of Le Griffon’s disappearance never was fully established. Some evidence points at a sudden storm, while others believe it was rival traders that attacked and destroyed the vessel.
- The weirdest thing is that Le Griffon’s wreckage never was found.
- The next noticeable vanishing happened in 1891 to the Thomas Hume schooner.
- The schooner never did make it back to its home port. The search for the ship was initiated almost immediately, but with no results for almost 120 years.
- There would also be the Rosa Belle. Also a lumber schooner, she set off on her final voyage from High Island to Benton Harbor in 1921.
- She was found later drifting aimlessly on the waters of Lake Michigan after being capsized by some great force.
- To add to the mystery, the ship’s crew was nowhere to be found and never heard from again…
- Northwest Orient Airlines Flight 2501 had taken off from New York and was headed for Seattle on June 23.
- It would appear that Flight 2501 had encountered a storm cloud, the plane malfunctioned, and then fell into Lake Michigan. But even with all efforts to try and find the wreckage, there was no success.
- Reportedly, two police officers saw a strange red light hovering above the lake on exactly the same day the plane disappeared.
- The anomaly of The Lake Michigan Triangle, if it exists and whatever it really is, remains a giant flaming question mark on the map of the United States.
