South Africa has long been known as one of the best places to see great white sharks, making it a prime area to observe these magnificent and formidable predators and go great white shark cage diving! These sharks, which can grow up to six meters in length (20 feet!) and 2 tons in weight, have been a protected species in South Africa since 1991.
This project is a commercial operation dedicated in preserving this fantastic predator and its environment and help in vital great white shark conservation. It also serves to educate people on why it is essential to conserve this species. The project works with students, eco-tourists, conservation organizations and marine resource users to gather data on the sharks, helping to correct negative misconceptions about them and stop the needless slaughter of over 100 million annually.

Description
Great White Shark diving in Gansbaai with White Shark Projects
Roughly two weeks after 2 rouge orca moved into the bay and killed at least 3 sharks, the sharks remained hidden. That changed today when we came across a young shark and a much bigger male. All of this footage is of the male. He was very active and luckily for us, extremely willing to check us out!

To book a shark cage dive with them, call +27 (0) 76 245 5880.
How it begins:
They collect you from Cape Town or Hermanus and take you on a scenic drive to ‘White Shark Lodge’, their home base in Kleinbaai, to enjoy a delicious continental breakfast and discuss current sightings, indemnities, wetsuits and equipment before heading off to board their custom built 36 ft, 4 tonne white shark dive catamaran – ‘Shark Team’. They limit her to 20 passenger capacity plus 5 crew to ensure your comfort and viewing pleasure throughout your adventure experience.
You get to meet one of their intrepid skippers, a qualified paramedic, a Dive Master and their friendly crew and enjoy a short talk on shark anatomy and behaviour. They explain how White Shark Projects works with the sharks in the area and how you will spend the next couple of hours diving and viewing these wondrous predators in their natural habitat.
As the day unfolds:
You are fully briefed on all procedures and the action begins as their crew ‘chums’ the cruise area and you wait with bated breath for your initial glimpse of the first shark fin.
Sharks are usually wary at first and you wait a while for them to settle and then lower the dive cage. The first guests enter the cage (takes 4 – 5 people) and spend about 20 minutes face to face with the sharks !
They will work with individual sharks and you can enjoy topside viewing during your wait as shark activity is often close to the surface.
In fact Great Whites are also known for their ‘spy hopping’ – breaching right out of the water in pursuit of prey ! Topside viewing can yield a lot of those action shots !

** If You Go Shark Cage Diving **
-Prepare for cancellations - Shark cage dives are often canceled due to the weather. In fact, that happened to us. If possible, plan for a make-up day during your vacation, so you have time to reschedule.
- Set your alarm clock - Cage dives often start early in the morning. If you are staying in Cape Town, it will take about two hours to get to Gansbaai, so it's ideal to stay in the area the night before the dive.
- Prepare for seasickness - A lot of people get seasick on these trip, so you might consider motion sickness tablets before you get on the boat.
- Towels & Showers Available - In addition to providing wetsuits and snorkel masks, most companies will provide towels and a shower.
- Dive with a reputable company - Our travel agent arranged our dive with the White Shark Projects, which seems to be an organized, knowledgeable, and ethical company. We've also heard good things about Marine Dynamics, which has a registered conservation trust for research, conservation, and education.
