Magnet Fishing: Whittier Alaska Harbor
Drove south to Whittier, Alaska harbor to do some magnet fishing. Whittier was devastated in the 1964 earthquake that rocked south central for over 5 minutes! The earthquake caused the bay to empty and created a tsunami that leveled the town. To all that lost their lives that day you will not be forgotten. Rest In Peace
It was a beautiful drive into Whittier and the 2.5 mile tunnel is awesome as always. There is only one way in and out of Whittier by car. The tunnel is one way and its shared with trains. Go do some magnet fishing with me. Let’s go!!
If you ever in Alaska, make sure you check out Whittier, it’s a beautiful little town.

A driving tour of Whittier, Alaska + The Tunnel!
This drive begins at Seward Highway, and follows the Portage Glacier Road to, and through, the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel. On the other side is Whittier -- and I think I drove on every street in town. Please let me know if I missed your favorite!
MyDrivelapse.com and Takemytrip.com provide driving videos and stories to help you plan your trip. Check out hundreds of videos on my YouTube channel. Subscribe if you like it! Dozens of new videos are on the way in the coming weeks.
I made this trip in May/June, 2016. Video shot with a Brinno TLC-200 Pro time-lapse camera, mounted on my roof with a homemade magnetic case. I travel with two Brinno cameras - one facing forward, the other in reverse. Sometimes the reverse camera captures better video (fewer raindrops and bugs hit the rear-view lens).

Hiking in Whittier, AK - Portage Pass
Mid-June hike in the Portage Valley of Alaska through Portage Pass to Portage Glacier. The trailhead is reached on the Whittier side of the Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel, the longest highway tunnel in North America. It’s an 800 foot climb over ¾ mile to views of the glacier and lake and views backward to Prince William Sound. From the pass summit, the trail descends another mile down to the shoreline and close-up views of this impressive glacier.
note: misspoken Edward instead of William at the start of the video.

Whittier, Alaska, 2015 by a1VIDEO and LanaphotoArt®
Small town Whittier hidden between mountains. There are only 3-5 streets and one big port for cruise ships. The city itself is a historical area, established by the U.S. Army during World War II.
One of the unique features of Whittier is that it is separated from Alaska’s road system by a 2.5 mile long tunnel that is shared by alternating one-way auto and railroad traffic.

Alaska is a place filled with beautiful views, and harsh and unreachable places. But Whittier, Alaska, may take the cake. The only way to reach this small city by land is a long, claustrophobic drive through a mountain. Michael Stevens, the creator of Vsauce, takes his incredible thirst for knowledge to Alaska to find out why this city chooses to make this remote location their home… and why they all live in a single building.
Field Day is a place to meet and see the platform’s most inspired filmmakers, dynamic entertainers, and exciting personalities. Each week, one of these inspired creators tries something new and creates their own unique, imaginative, dream video. Whether they’re investigating far-off places, dancing with remote control cars, or stunt flying with Star Fox, you won’t want to miss these creators #HaveAFieldDay

Whittier Tunnel | Whittier, Alaska | One Way Car and Train Tunnel | Longest One Way Tunnel
We made a really quick morning stop in Whittier prior to dropping Maria off at the Anchorage Airport. The Whittier Tunnel is 2.5 miles long and only allows on traffic. On the half hour cars leave to Whittier and on the hour cars leave from Whittier.
The tunnel was constructed to withstand -40 Fahrenheit temperatures and 150 mph winds. The one lane tunnel is shared by cars and trains traveling both directions. There is a toll charge to drive through the tunnel. Tunnel drive takes appx 10 minutes.

Whittier Glacier Cruise
We went on a 4 hour glacier cruise with some friends recently. It was out of Whittier, Alaska. Despite what was possibly the worst weather day of the entire summer, we still had a great time!! We saw lots of glaciers, eagles, harbor seals and sea birds.
