Wildland Firefighter Memorial (Storm King) - Glenwood Springs, Colorado
The South Canyon Fire is a 1994 wildfire that took the lives of 14 wildland firefighters on Storm King Mountain, near Glenwood Springs, Colorado. They lost their lives on July 6, 1994. The fire is often also referred to as the Storm King fire.
This memorial (one of three) is located in Two Rivers Park in Glenwood Springs, Colorado. West of town is the actual location of the fire where there now exists the Storm King Mountain Memorial Trail (visible in my other video by that title). The trail closely follows the actual path the firefighters hiked to fight the blaze. Plaques and memorials line the trail explaining the events and paying homage to those who fell. You can visit the crosses which symbolize where each person fell.
Another memorial has also been constructed at Ochoco Creek Park in Prineville, Oregon.
Those who died:
Prineville Hotshots: Kathi Beck, Tamera Bickett, Scott Blecha, Levi Brinkley, Douglas Dunbar, Terri Hagen, Bonnie Holtby, Rob Johnson, Jon Kelso.
Missoula Smokejumper: Don Mackey
McCall Smokejumpers: Roger Roth, Jim Thrash.
Helitack: Robert Browning, Jr., Richard Tyler.

Wilderness Explorer: Jacob Holden
Over the course of the summer, this intrepid explorer, Jacob Holden, had the opportunity to visit all nine of the Oregon/Washington Wilderness Areas. Jacob was able to see the ins-and-outs of each wilderness area and gather photos and video to share with the public! In this short video Jacob tells the story of his journeys and give some tips on what to expect when you head out to the wild.
In addition to nine wilderness areas, the BLM in Oregon and Washington also manages 127 different National Conservation Lands which include two National Monuments, one Cooperative Management and Protection Area, one legislated Outstanding Natural Area, 86 Wilderness Study Areas, 25 Wild & Scenic Rivers (the most of any BLM state), two National Scenic Trails, and two National Historic Trails.
Wilderness is Congressionally-designated pieces of land that is managed in accordance with the Wilderness Act of 1964 to ...secure for the American people of present and future generations the benefits of an enduring resource of wilderness. Wilderness areas are places where natural processes take precedent; areas managed so that nature remains substantially unchanged by human use. Rugged trails provide the only access into wilderness, and travel is restricted to foot or horseback.

When did the definition of an American exclude being Patriotic? I used to call myself a Patriot but no, I'm an American and anti-American liberals should be treated as traitors to our Country when they take our rights to rally away with their violence..

Small planes help protect homes when fires break out
today we got a special look at a small plane that is making a big difference in putting out fires during this already devestating fire season. joe bartels is live in ruidoso with a look and what part the planes played during the swallow fire... joe? the planes are single engine air tankers or seats for short and actually evolved from agricutural use. officials say seats are one of the main reasons why more homes were not destroyed during the swallow fire. two of the 13 hundred horse power planes are now stationed at the ruidoso airport so they can be on a fire scene in 10 minutes. like other air tankers they hold retardant and have pin- point accuracy making them ideal in tight spaces. ground crews say they saw smoke even before they got the call to starting making drops on the fire. i got to say, the ic, the man in charge, didn't hesitate in having us fly into a residential area and making drops. we could see the smoke. a lot of concerns, a lot of worries. the planes are stationed around the state and are expected to be airbone within 15 minutes of being requested. the planes hold up to 800 gallons of fire retardant and can be refueld and refilled in about 6 minutes. two seats from roswell were scrambled for the swallow fire and officials say together with ground crews saved hundreds of homes.
Explore Oregon Recreation: Redmond Caves
The Redmond Caves are a group of five caves formed by volcanic flows of molten lava from the Newberry Caldera. Located inside the Redmond city limits, the caves are managed by the Bureau of Land Management in partnership with the City of Redmond.
Today, the Redmond Caves are managed as a unique site where visitors can learn about geology, wildlife and past human use. Native Americans used the caves, at least periodically, over the past 6,000 years.
Visitors are asked to respect the caves and the land surrounding them as a natural park, and to avoid artifact collecting, trash dumping, woodcutting or adding graffiti to the cave walls and entrances.
The five caves were created from the collapse of a single lava tube. The largest opening (Cave 1) enters a fairly deep and expansive cave, while Cave 3 has two openings joined by a narrow, but easily passable connection. Caves 1, 3, and 4 are accessible and have deep, sandy soils, with scattered boulders and ceiling blocks. The Prineville BLM manages the Redmond Caves area for foot traffic only with parking and an entrance on Southwest Airport Way.
The area is flat and covered with scattered juniper trees, sagebrush and rabbitbrush. Visitors to the area can take a short, roughly half-mile hike around the parcel and explore the five caves:
Redmond Caves have been listed as Significant under the Federal Caves Resources Protection Act due to their cultural, recreational, biological and educational values.
Given the unique historical, cultural, wildlife and geological values of the site, visitors should practice leave no trace ethics when visiting the site. Leave only footprints and take nothing but pictures. This 40-acre parcel is managed for education and interpretive use, and prohibits the following activities to help protect the caves:
Motorized and mechanized vehicles
Campfires in the entire Redmond Caves Area, including the caves
Overnight use, except under permit
Placement of physical geocaches
Paintball use
All firearm discharge
All rockhounding and collection of decorative stone
Painting, marking, or otherwise defacing the caves and surrounding rocks
Digging and excavating
Use of fireworks or other pyrotechnic devices within the caves
Dogs or other animals within the caves
No smoking within the caves
Know Before You Go
These caves are preserved in their natural state; therefore, inherent risks exist that require precautions:
Always watch for rattlesnakes.
Leave word with someone stating what cave you will be visiting and an approximate return time.
Take three dependable sources of light.
Wear sturdy shoes that protect the ankle and have non-leather, non-skid, non-marking soles.
Gloves and kneepads may be necessary and/or useful in some caves.
Wear a helmet to protect against low ceilings.
Take someone with you when you enter a cave—don't go alone.
The Redmond Caves are located north of Airport Way and east of 13th Street in Redmond, roughly between the Deschutes County Fairgrounds and Redmond Airport.
The coordinates for the site are: 44.249474°, -121.179235°.
From Bend: Take State Highway 97 north towards Redmond to Exit 24 at SW Airport Way. Head east past the Deschutes County Fairgrounds heading toward the Redmond Airport. Travel 1.0 mile east to the Redmond Caves sign and pull into the parking area on the north side of SW Airport Way.
From Redmond: The Redmond Caves site is located 0.8 miles south of the Redmond Airport Entrance on SW Airport Way.

Fighting fire in a single-engine air tanker
If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to fight fire from the air – now you know! In early July 2015, a BLM SEAT, or single engine air tanker, responded to the Cottonwood fire in southeast Oregon. The fire was located just south of Juntura and Monument Peak in Oregon. This exciting footage is from the point of view a BLM single engine airtanker, or SEAT.
The Bureau of Land Management Fire and Aviation program is a large and complex organization having primary responsibility for fire response and management on 253 million acres of public land. The protection and safety of firefighters and the public is the top priority, followed by working closely with other land and resource management disciplines to identify and achieve fire management goals and to benefit and sustain natural resources.

Black Crater Hike September 2nd, 2014
Short day hike to the summit of Black Crater near Sisters Oregon. The trailhead for Black Crater is located approximately 12 miles west of Sisters on Highway 242 (McKenzie Hwy).
According to my GPS the trail is about 3.7 miles (to summit) gaining 2,350 feet of elevation. The trail is steep from the start but the views up there make it a must see. Hope you enjoy my short video.
Memaloose State Park, Oregon, Review
For $31.00 a night, Memaloose State Park along the Columbia River Gorge in Oregon, offers great views of the water, if you're at the best section of the park. Otherwise, expect lots of kids, crying and screaming. I probably won't be back to Memaloose, but if I do it will be mid-week away from holidays.
