The Hermanus Wine Route - South Africa
The Hermanus Wine Route - South Africa
►Read the blog:
In this episode I take you on a tour of the Hermanus wine route on the R320 to the top three wineries, Sumaridge, Atraxia and Creation Wines. The Hermanus wine route is located 90 minutes south of Cape Town right before Hermanus town.
Our first stop is the family owned Sumaridge Wine Estate. Their mountain vineyards offer a variety of different wines. From the common varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Rose to a blend of wines like Epotome and Maritimos. The estate offers tasting and dinning from 12pm to 3pm.
Next we visit Ataraxia for a tasting in their cool wine lounge. They built their wine lounge to look like a chapel. We tried Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and a delicious red blend that they are known for called Serenity.
Our last stop on the Hermanus wine route is Creation Wines, which has been awarded the clinque award which means they have the best food and wine pairing in South Africa. We tried some gazpacho, oysters and some more delicious bites.
Creation Wines creates a wide range of wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Pinot Noir and Syrah. They gave us a special tour of the cellar and let me try an aging Syrah my favorite.
The Hermans wine route features a total of 15 vineyards each with premium quality wines. This is a must visit if you are heading down to Hermanus from Cape Town.
We hope you enjoyed Wine Tasting Along the Hermanus Wine Route! Have you been to the Hermanus Wine Route? Leave a comment below!

Bosman Hermanus Video
Drive up the Hemel-en-Aarde Pass and turn left towards the De Bos dam & around a bend, a low slung building appears on the horizon, perched on a sweeping landscape and anchored under a large tree. This is the Frame House. A wood and canvas structure housing the wine tasting room and picnic service belonging to Bosman Family Vineyards on their farm in the Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Hermanus. The Frame House is a refreshment station from which you can explore both nature and your place within it trough primarily our wine range tasting experience, complemented with a picnic service that we offer. Nature trails are also available at Bosman Hermanus where you can soak up the views, absorb the stillness broken only by the rustling bushes or soft bird call. At the top enjoy a 360º view of the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. From there you can see all the way across Walker Bay to Gansbaai in the South and Hangklip in the West. Delicious coffee is available from our in house barista.
Wine hopping in HERMANUS!
Hermanus (120km outside of Cape Town) is a perfect place to spend the weekend, with cliffside paths looking over the Atlantic Ocean, art galleries, restaurants, and most importantly – abundant wine tasting opportunities! Some of my favourite wines come from the Hemel en Arde Valley which lies just outside of town. The valley is famous for the quality of its chardonnays and pinot noirs in particular, as well as its spectacular steep sided and fynbos covered beauty.
The R320 road which cuts through the valley is a winding route, dotted with wine farms and tasting rooms, and so it makes sense to let someone else do the driving, which is why we opted for the hop on hop off Hermanus Wine Hoppers, which use a fleet of safari vehicles to transport passengers up and down the route, stopping pretty much hourly at most of the available venues.
We started our journey at Hermanuspietersfontein wines, which is basically still in Hermanus, and despite requiring almost no effort to get to, rewards with a variety of wines – I am particularly fond of the Kaalvoet Meisie, a single varietal Sauvignon blanc.
Next up we stopped at Bouchard Finlayson, a boutique winery with exceptional Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, we were lucky to taste the 2017 Tete de Cuvee which was made from only four barrels and showed fruit, spice and coffee on the palate.
Well wined by this pointed we opted for simply a glass of sparkling MCC at our next stop of Bosman Wines – the Loose Cannon was effervescent and drinkable, pleasantly dry and redolent of apple, peach and berries. Bosman has a beautiful tasting room with great views, and also provided us with an excellent array of pre-lunch snacks.
Next on the route was the beautiful Ataraxia, with its chapel-like tasting room and outstanding Chardonnays, the elevated section of the valley offering excellent growing conditions.
Our final stop was Creation Winery, which as well as making some good wines serves the best lunch in the valley – a five course tasting menu with paired wines (eight!) that included abalone starters, coconut poached line fish, both lamb and springbok, and a malva pudding to finish.
We had an amazing time in Hermanus, and I recommend anyone with an extra couple of days spare to check it out next time you are in Cape Town!

The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley near Hermanus is the gateway to a circular route through the imposing Overberg Mountains. With a name meaning 'heaven and earth', the valley inspires lofty sentiments with its stunning scenery. Located at the lower reaches of the Onrus River, the valley is blessed with bounteous vineyards, heavy fruit orchards, velvety fynbos hillsides and imposing krantzes. A great destination for wine-lovers, Hemel-en-Aarde produces some of South Africa's award-winning wines.

The Hermanus Wine Route
The Hermanus Wine Route lies on the R320, which wends its way through the beautiful Hemel-en-Aarde Valley. Although superb whale watching made Hermanus world famous, its wines are as deserving of praise. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is protected from the cool sea breezes but benefits from plentiful rain and sunshine, making an ideal growing environment for the wine estates in the area, which include Bouchard Finlayson, Creation Wines and Ataraxia. We popped into two other estates – Southern Right and Russell Hamilton Vineyards – to chat to owner and winemaker Anthony Russell Hamilton about what makes this corner of the Garden Route so perfect for viticulture.
WINE TASTING | STELLENBOSCH, SOUTH AFRICA
Hello peoples,
My friends and I headed out to Stellenbosch this week to have some wine tasting adventures so I threw a little video together to remember the occasion.
We almost got lost, had a tour of the Stellies Uni campus, and I tried to veganize a pizza which didn't really work.
Here's to more adventures with cool peeps.

Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines: Winery of the Year (Platter's Guide)
So it was with great pleasure that I accepted an invitation from Greg Sherwood, senior buyer at Handford Wines - a superb London wine shop, by the way - to taste some fine terroir driven wines from Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines in South Africa.
I enjoyed very much the Schist and Quartz Chenin Blancs that I tried, as they were crisp and flavorful, with long finishes.
Nicola Tipping hosted the tasting at the store, as she represents the winery and - just by chance - as we were tasting the wines, it was announced that Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines earned the winery of the year award from the famous Platter's Guide.
