The Hermanus Wine Route - South Africa
The Hermanus Wine Route - South Africa
►Read the blog:
In this episode I take you on a tour of the Hermanus wine route on the R320 to the top three wineries, Sumaridge, Atraxia and Creation Wines. The Hermanus wine route is located 90 minutes south of Cape Town right before Hermanus town.
Our first stop is the family owned Sumaridge Wine Estate. Their mountain vineyards offer a variety of different wines. From the common varieties like Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Rose to a blend of wines like Epotome and Maritimos. The estate offers tasting and dinning from 12pm to 3pm.
Next we visit Ataraxia for a tasting in their cool wine lounge. They built their wine lounge to look like a chapel. We tried Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and a delicious red blend that they are known for called Serenity.
Our last stop on the Hermanus wine route is Creation Wines, which has been awarded the clinque award which means they have the best food and wine pairing in South Africa. We tried some gazpacho, oysters and some more delicious bites.
Creation Wines creates a wide range of wines such as Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Pinot Noir and Syrah. They gave us a special tour of the cellar and let me try an aging Syrah my favorite.
The Hermans wine route features a total of 15 vineyards each with premium quality wines. This is a must visit if you are heading down to Hermanus from Cape Town.
We hope you enjoyed Wine Tasting Along the Hermanus Wine Route! Have you been to the Hermanus Wine Route? Leave a comment below!

Wine hopping in HERMANUS!
Hermanus (120km outside of Cape Town) is a perfect place to spend the weekend, with cliffside paths looking over the Atlantic Ocean, art galleries, restaurants, and most importantly – abundant wine tasting opportunities! Some of my favourite wines come from the Hemel en Arde Valley which lies just outside of town. The valley is famous for the quality of its chardonnays and pinot noirs in particular, as well as its spectacular steep sided and fynbos covered beauty.
The R320 road which cuts through the valley is a winding route, dotted with wine farms and tasting rooms, and so it makes sense to let someone else do the driving, which is why we opted for the hop on hop off Hermanus Wine Hoppers, which use a fleet of safari vehicles to transport passengers up and down the route, stopping pretty much hourly at most of the available venues.
We started our journey at Hermanuspietersfontein wines, which is basically still in Hermanus, and despite requiring almost no effort to get to, rewards with a variety of wines – I am particularly fond of the Kaalvoet Meisie, a single varietal Sauvignon blanc.
Next up we stopped at Bouchard Finlayson, a boutique winery with exceptional Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs, we were lucky to taste the 2017 Tete de Cuvee which was made from only four barrels and showed fruit, spice and coffee on the palate.
Well wined by this pointed we opted for simply a glass of sparkling MCC at our next stop of Bosman Wines – the Loose Cannon was effervescent and drinkable, pleasantly dry and redolent of apple, peach and berries. Bosman has a beautiful tasting room with great views, and also provided us with an excellent array of pre-lunch snacks.
Next on the route was the beautiful Ataraxia, with its chapel-like tasting room and outstanding Chardonnays, the elevated section of the valley offering excellent growing conditions.
Our final stop was Creation Winery, which as well as making some good wines serves the best lunch in the valley – a five course tasting menu with paired wines (eight!) that included abalone starters, coconut poached line fish, both lamb and springbok, and a malva pudding to finish.
We had an amazing time in Hermanus, and I recommend anyone with an extra couple of days spare to check it out next time you are in Cape Town!

HERMANUS
Hermanus is the 'jewel of the Overberg', or the 'whale capital of the world' - it depends on who you ask!
Hermanus is world famous for its land-based whale watching. The 12km long Cliff Path offers various view points to see the whales, with some taking you only a few metres from the whales!
They can be seen in the southern winter and spring season (June - November) after migrating from the Antarctic, when they seek out the waters of the Overstrand, especially Walker Bay, to calve and mate.
Nowadays much more than a sleepy old fishing village - Hermanus has loads more to offer. From spectacular restaurants, coffee shops and art galleries to various adventure activities, hiking/MTB trails and the picturesque wine route of the Hemel-en-Aarde (Heaven and Earth) valley.
Due to its close proximity to both the ocean and mountains - it surely is a uniquely beautiful destination, well worth a visit!
This short video only scratches the tip of what is on offer in Hermanus.

Hermanus - Hoy's Koppie a historical site Hermanus overlooking Walkerbay
One of the first regular visitors to Hermanus was Sir William Hoy, General Manager of the Railways. He ensured the natural beauty of Hermanus would stay unspoilt by blocking any attempt to extend the Bot River railway line to the village. His legacy lives on in the Hermanus Station that has no lines or trains and the hill that lies in the middle of the village, Hoy's Koppie, where he and his wife are buried.
HERMANUS
This is the theme song from the 1992 short documentary of the small fishing village 121 km outside of Cape Town - where thousands of tourists flock annually to catch a glimpse of the whales or are fortunate enough to take a boat trip and film these majestic creatures up close.

History of Hermanus, Western Cape South Africa.
Hermanus (originally called Hermanuspietersfontein, but shortened in 1902 as the name was too long for the postal service [2]), is a town on the southern coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa. It is famous for southern right whale watching during the southern winter and spring and is a popular retirement location. The whales can be seen from the cliffs in the town centre as early as June and usually depart in early-December. They were once hunted in the nearby town of Betty's Bay, but are now protected to ensure the survival of the species. The Old Harbour Museum in Hermanus contains several exhibitions that explain the whaling industry, and the De Wetshuis Photo Museum houses an exhibition of photos by T. D. Ravenscroft that depicts the history of Hermanus. The Whale Museum houses a skeleton of a whale and shows an audio-visual presentation of whales and dolphins twice daily.

Hermanus, the world's foremost land based whale watching destination, is a thriving holiday resort offering residents and holiday makers all modern amenities, yet retaining its fisherman's village charm. The popular resort town of Hermanus, situated between mountain and sea, has gained world-wide recognition as the world's foremost land based whale watching destination. This has resulted in the former fishing village showing a tremendous growth over the last few years.
Contributory factors to the success of the town are the natural scenic beauty, the mild climate, the range of outdoor activities available, and the close proximity to Cape Town, with Hermanus being a mere 140 km from the Cape Metrople. The ideal base from which to explore the Western Cape and the Cape Overberg.
Hermanus has something for everyone. The Fernkloof Nature Reserve has over 40 km of walks, ranging from moderate to strenuous walks in the beautiful mountains which form an imposing backdrop to the town. The 14 km of unique cliff walks recently incorporated into the nature reserve boast a variety of coastal fynbos and birdlife.
The pristine stretches of beach offer solitude to the walker and boating activities abound in the Kleinriver Lagoon, renowned for its birdlife. Invigorating horse rides along the beach appeal to all ages. The Hermanus Golf Course is well known and curious baboons create a diversion as they silently observe the players.
The Old Harbour complex in Hermanus offers the visitor an insight into Hermanus' past as a Fisherman's village and marine life. Hermanus and neighbouring towns Onrus and Stanford are the residence of a variety of artists, from watercolours, to writers, potters and crafters. Excellent jewellery is produced and crafts of a high standard can be purchased at the popular Craft Market at Lemm's Corner.
The Hermanus Wine Route, the southernmost in Africa, produces top quality, world renowned wines. Hermanus is firmly established on the Epicurean map with its myriad of restaurants, fine wine, fresh vegetables cheese and fish.
