MADE IN AFRICA
A short 'docu-mercial' about the process of creating the Shompole Collection, a Kenya based jewelry line designed by Liz Gilbert. The process is traced all the way from the hunt for gold, the metal work involved in converting it into wire, and traveling deep into the hills of Kenya to work directly with Maasai tribeswomen to incorporate their beautiful and unique style of beadwork.

Zebra eating bush during drought
Saturday 13 February 2016 - Kruger National Park
Returning to Lower Sabie on the S28 after a Morning Walk we stopped to watch a herd of zebra. Bridgeman (backup trails guide - from Byamiti) noticed that there were a few zebra Browsing on a shrub. After they had moved off Travis (senior guide) and Bridgeman collected a sample of the shrub. The zebras are generally looking fine, although I understand that their gas filled hind-gut fermenting digestive system usually makes them look filled out. We did notice that many of them had sagging manes, which I understand is a better indication of their condition. The zebra that is browsing in the video seems to be in good condition. Is browsing by zebra a common observation during drought conditions?
Ian McDonald (Ecologist)
Yes, being hindgut fermentors, zebra depend on food quantity rather than quality. They are also not affected by tannins in leaves which is an advantage to them. Their digestive system allows them to be able to vary their diet as they are less dependant on bacterial fermentation of high quality foods. This means that they can include unusual plants in their diet, often forbs (bossies/weeds) and in this case browse as well. These browse plants are not ideal, but will help see them through
Marc Holcroft
Very interesting! Thank you so much Ian. We saw so many hippo and buffalo carcasses in that area and heard from Travis that along the Sabie river section east of Lower Sabie there were about 20 carcasses on the southern side and about 30-40 carcasses on the northern side. I have seen hippo biting into some phragmites reeds and chewing on some water plants before (wether they were actually ingesting them or not was not so clear), but I have never noticed buffalo eating anything other than grass. I was also wondering how the White Rhino have been faring, especially being territorial?
Ian McDonald
White rhino are also hindgut fermentors and being bulk grazers, they are able to survive on dry, fibrous grass that most other grazers cannot survive on. As a result, rhino mortality due to the drought should be low. Hippo and buffalo are both foregut fermentors (although hippos do not chew the cud like buffalo do) - as a result, they need a higher quality diet to keep the bacteria in their gut happy - this is why these 2 species in particular are taking such serious strain with the drought. It is quite widely recorded that buffalo will browse in times of drought, but the high tannin content of browse is generally not good for their digestive system.
Music of Uganda - Nakilyoowa.mp4
This is a Song by Musisi Posiano that I recorded in March 2012 in Lutengo, not so far from Kampala - Uganda. The language this fingerstyle artist sings in is Luganda. The guitar is selfmade and carved out of one piece of wood. The strings are brake cables, clutch cables and other available materials. Musisi told us that he is dreaming of buying a real guitar one day. However, I find the guitar sounds quite good.
The song is called Nakilyoowa which is a name of a girl. All comments on the video and interpretations of the lyrics are most welcome!

Find out how to make home made furniture out of mud and bricks. These chairs, beds and sofas made out of clay are inspirational and can be used in all sorts of settings. We will be trying them out in some of Kampala's slums. This video has Luganda (mainly Central Region Uganda) words but can be understood in any language.

We Matter Too ........A cry from a disabled
Jenny's Foundation made a visit to the village of Nzulezo (or Nzulezu) located near the village of Beyin, roughly 90 kilometers west of Takoradi, in the Jomoro District of the Western Region of Ghana.
Nzulezo overlooks the Lake Tadane, and is entirely made up of stilts and platforms. In 2000, it was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and it is a major tourist attraction area.
Our visit to Nzulezo was challenging, with most of the team members having to tackle their fear of being on a lake, river for the first time, and never being on a canoe in their whole entire life. But nevertheless was driven by the same passion to help support and change the lives of the children at Nzulezo
We also visited Nkwatia Kwahu a village in the Kwahu East district, a district in the Eastern Region of south Ghana. Where we had the privilege of meeting a lot of families of which had children suffering from different disabilities.
The trips were very emotional, educating and rewarding. With a lot of wonderful stories behind each child's condition, we was able to have a rough idea of the kind of help and support which would be needed and of good help to them on our next visit to Ghana.

SUMMARY
=======
Uganda ( yoo-GA(H)N-də), officially the Republic of Uganda (Swahili: Jamhuri ya Uganda), is a landlocked country (except for its borders with Lake Victoria and Lake Albert) in East-Central Africa. It is bordered to the east by Kenya, to the north by South Sudan, to the west by the Democratic Republic of the Congo, to the south-west by Rwanda, and to the south by Tanzania. The southern part of the country includes a substantial portion of Lake Victoria, shared with Kenya and Tanzania. Uganda is in the African Great Lakes region. Uganda also lies within the Nile basin, and has a varied but generally a modified equatorial climate.
Uganda takes its name from the Buganda kingdom, which encompasses a large portion of the south of the country, including the capital Kampala. The people of Uganda were hunter-gatherers until 1,700 to 2,300 years ago, when Bantu-speaking populations migrated to the southern parts of the country.
Beginning in 1894, the area was ruled as a protectorate by the UK, who established administrative law across the territory. Uganda gained independence from the UK on 9 October 1962. The period since then has been marked by intermittent conflicts, including a lengthy civil war against the Lord's Resistance Army in the Northern Region led by Joseph Kony, which has caused hundreds of thousands of casualties. The official languages are English and Swahili, although any other language may be used as a medium of instruction in schools or other educational institutions or for legislative, administrative or judicial purposes as may be prescribed by law. Luganda, a central language, is widely spoken across the country, and several other languages are also spoken including Runyoro, Runyankole, Rukiga, and Luo.The president of Uganda is Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who came to power in January 1986 after a protracted six-year guerrilla war.
