A Walk Through Yanks Air Museum
The same day that I visited the March Field air museum near Los Angeles, I was also able to just barely manage a quick visit to the Yanks Air Museum in Chino, California. I had just visited its neighboring Planes of Fame museum the previous day, and was planning to visit the San Diego Aviation Museum the next day. All this, along with visits to the Petersen Automotive Museum, and Queen Mary ocean liner, were done during my three day planned layover in the Los Angeles area between Parts 1 & 2 of my Train Odyssey 2. Videos of all these attractions are, or will soon be, found here on my YouTube channel.

A visit to the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation
Staffed by an exceptionally dedicated group of men and women, the Army Aviation Heritage Foundation is worth a visit and a ride.
My purpose for visiting AAHF was to scout the availability of UH-1 Huey helicopters for an upcoming movie titled The Rescue . . . a Vietnam era film requiring an number of the vintage whirling machines.
The Rescue will be a positive story of service in Southeast Asia and will be dedicated to all those who served there with honor. It will feature one of the most daring helicopter units to serve in Vietnam, the 281st Assault Helicopter Company. The 281st was recently recognized as the US Army's First Special Operations Helicopter Unit . . . and honored with a memorial at the Special Operations Headquarters at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.
My service in Vietnam was as a Special Forces Officer and Military Advisor. When I decided to visit the AAHF today to look at their flying fleet, I couldn't help taking one of my grandson's with me. This is the resulting video. While he appears a bit apprehensive when we first took off, by the end of the ride he asked if we could go again.
The Army Aviation Heritage Foundation is staffed mostly by volunteers and their existence depends on donations. So, if you are a flying enthusiast, lover of military history, or you simply care about those giving there time and energy to a worthy cause . . . you might consider the AAHF and send them a dollar or two continue their work.
Before today, the last time I flew in a Huey, it was nearly 50 years ago and I had been rescued by the 281st AHC who flew into enemy territory to extract me from a Vietnamese jungle.
Ride Out To FLYING LEATHERNECK AVIATION MUSEUM (USMC)
The Flying Leatherneck Aviation Museum in San Diego is the only museum in the world primarily dedicated to United States Marine Corps (USMC) aviation. It has the largest and most complete collection of historical aircraft flown by U.S. Marine pilots in the world. The Museum tells the proud story of USMC Aviation and the part it has played in defending America.
