Yashimaji Temple, Takamatsu in Cherry Blossom Season ???? 屋島寺と屋島城跡 ???? Japan As It Truly Is
Yashimaji Temple is one of the best of the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage, and gives a superb view over Takamatsu City.
It sits on a 282m tall lava plateau and is the 84th temple of the pilgrimage. Yashima-ji has a history going back to 754 AD and the area is also the site of a castle from the 7th century, as well as the site of a decisive battle between the Taira and Minamoto clans during the Battle of Yashima in the Genpei War (源平合戦) in 1185 - the war's outcome forever changed the destiny of Japan.
Here you can see it in the cherry blossom season, which is one of the most beautiful times to visit.
Along with seeing the beautiful Ritsurin Park garden as well as the beautiful Takamatsu Castle Yashimaji can make a great day of Japan sightseeing.

Located outside Takamatsu city, Kagawa Prefecture, is Yashima (屋島), a flat topped mountain. The Kanji characters for Yashima literally translates to “roof island”, but there is more to this mountain than its shape. Historically Yashima played an important role as the site for the battle between Taira and Minamoto Clans during the Gempei War. In addition, Yashima Temple and the New Yashima Aquarium are sites of interest for visitors.
Visitors can find many areas on Yashima displaying its historic heritage. As mentioned before, in the 12th century, the Taira Clan and Minamoto clan fought here during the Gempei War. The Taira Clan was defeated here and it is said that this battle was the last battle before the Taira Clan’s final destruction. Visitors can find the Chinoike, which literally translates to “blood pond” on Yashima’s summit. It is said that Minamoto Clan members washed their swords here after the victory, turning the lake red with blood. Other monuments and historical displays can be found on the summit.
Also on the summit, visitors can enjoy the breathtaking views of Takamatsu and the Seto Inland Sea. Special souvenirs can be purchased here. Small clay discs are purchased and thrown off the mountain for good luck. The clay discs symbolize the headpieces the Minamoto warriors threw off after defeating the Taira Clan.
Visitors can also visit the Yashima Temple located near the summit’s parking area. Yashima Temple is number 84 in the 88 temples on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. There are quite a few temple buildings, each reflecting a different era. There is a modern museum here as well, featuring artifacts from Yashima’s history.
Yashima Temple Museum
Hours: 9:00 to 17:00
Closed: Opened All Year Round

Visitors may wish to visit the New Yashima Aquarium, which is located about 5 minutes on foot away from the summit. Though small, the aquarium does have dolphin and seal shows.
New Yashima Aquarium

Temple 84 Yashimaji - 屋島寺
Set up on a hill overlooking the site of many famous battles from The Tales of the Heike between the Taira and the Minamoto is Temple 84, Yashimaji - 屋島寺, Roof Island Temple. The hike up to the temple is a bit of a yin and yang, as it starts off with a city hike that then turns into a pleasant mountain hike. The temple has a small but very interesting museum that, unfortunately, is only open on Sundays. Near the back gate (the main gate if you come by vehicle) is blood pond. So named because after a battle the Genji cleaned their swords in it and it turned red with the blood of the Taira. お遍路四国八十八ヶ所 T84屋島寺

Yamanobe-no Michi: Japan's Oldest Road!-Pt 1
A few days ago, together with my hiking buddy's Barry and Motokazu san we set out on another part of the Yamanobe-no-michi trail. This time are starting point was Nara city. The weather was nice, not too hot and humid. The rainy season is about to start and we want to complete the whole trail. The hike conssts of 3 parts, from Nara to Obitoke (JR station), from Obitoke to Tenri and the last part from tern to Miwa station. The last temple on the route is Byodo-in temple.
The first stop was Fukuu-in ji temple and on to Shin-yakushi-ji temple. The Shin-yakushi-ji Temple was built in the 19th year of the Tempyo era (747) by the Imperial order of the Empress Komyo for the purpose of praying to Buddha for the Emperor Shomu's recovery from his eye disease. The meaning of Shin found in the temple name, which is pronounced as 'atara' or 'arata' in Japanese, seems not to be 'new' (atara-shi) but 'wonder-working' (arata-ka). The on to Byakugô-ji Temple, situated on Mount Takamado. To reach the temple there are a fair amount of steps, worthwhile though as it is an oasis of beauty and silence. From the temple grounds you can enjoy a panoramic view of Nara and its landmarks (the pagoda of Tofukuji), Mount Ikoma and many other historic sites.
The trail sometimes leads along secondary roads, bamboo forest, through rice paddy's and fields. It took us a small 5 hours to reach our end point, including time to take pictures, eat our lunch and have a refreshing nama beer at the end of our adventure. There are no high hills to cross and it can be an enjoyable hike for anyone who likes to get a glimpse of the country side and see some local shrines and temples.
Some of the other points of interest you'll encounter along the way are the Yasaka jinja, related to the Yasaka jinja in Kyoto, wind chimes in the bamboo forest and the Mino Tateyama Fudomyodo-in, a small shrine in the bamboo forest.
There is also the Shirayama jingo, it has a long history dating back to 1709 and is a cultural property. Then there is Shimada jinja, dating back to the same time period as Shirayama jingo.
Next you'll see the burial mount of Emperor Sudo-tenno Yashima Ryo. The trail then leads through a bamboo forest and there is a burial site for persons who, upon passing away, had no relatives. Continuing on you come to the Ensho-ji Monastery, situated deep in the bamboo forest. It is very quiet and scenic and boast of beautiful gardens. It's a pity that you cannot enter though. The famous Yamamura school tea ceremony school has it's headquarters here. From there through a narrow path is the Kobo Daishi memorial shrine and there are a few more small Shinto shrines before reaching the road that will lead you to Obitoke JR station.
If you enjoy a nama beer or want to have a bite to eat there is a nice place close to your end point called Samasama, the lady of the house likes Ragae music.
It was a very enjoyable day, a highly recommended excursion, if you like some more info, drop me a line and I'll be happy to assist you!
