Yass Valley Lamb - Canberra Region
What do you do if you’ve taken on a business that has been in your family for eight generations? In today’s ever-changing business climate, you stay relevant, you diversify, you innovate.
That’s exactly what Landon Hodgkinson from Yass Valley Beef and Lamb is doing. This farmer and grazier runs Vale View – a 3000 acre property just 15 minutes west of Yass and half an hour from Canberra. Specialising in wool and sheep production – Landon and his sister Allison manage the operations now that their parents are getting older. They run 6000 breeding ewes – split between wool production and fat lambs – as well as cattle to be sold in Sydney, and hay production for supply to Bega on the South Coast of NSW.
Yass’ position geographically is one reason the business remains successful, and Landon says the opportunities in Yass Valley are fantastic, with Canberra being just 40 minutes away, and Sydney just three hours away. Currently, they are looking to create a different sort of business model for the future – from where they were before which was a micron wool producing enterprise, to being diverse and opening up different income streams.
The business has seen new opportunities open up with the introduction of international flights into Canberra and Landon has been working with the Canberra Business Chamber and other partners on trade missions into Korea and Japan to look at opportunities for his business in Asia. In the future, he sees Yass becoming a traceable area with the clean green environment where they are able to promote all kinds of products into the Asian markets.
Locally speaking, Yass Valley Beef and Lamb employs local and regional contractors for shearing and lamb marking, with about 50 people coming through the property to work each year.
Landon says he loves the sense of community. Since returning to the area after living in Sydney he has noticed a real growth in Yass Valley. He says it’s become a satellite city of Canberra. He’s also noticed a lot of families coming to the region from Sydney and Canberra and that they come to the Yass region for the sense of community, the space and quality of lifestyle here, and the flexibility. Flexibility in living, flexibility and adaptability in business.
Yass Valley offers many business opportunities across the region for locals and newcomers to the area. Our competitive advantage is our location, just 45 minutes’ from Canberra, and three hours’ drive from Sydney, the area is very well connected at the junction of five main highways. A variety of industries have seen business success here including agriculture, food and wine, retail, hospitality, tourism and business services. Yass Valley – It’s good for business.

Yass Bookkeeping - Canberra Region
Sometimes you just should throw yourself in the deep end. But what if that deep end is a small country town, where you don’t know anyone, and you want to start your own business?
Jennifer Lang has done it. And she’s proved it’s easy if you choose the right location. Her business is Yass Bookkeeping and Business Services, and she lives and works in Yass Valley, having arrived here not knowing anyone just three years ago.
Her secret? Getting involved in the community. Getting out amongst the locals, meeting people, networking with businesses and finding out what their needs are, and then growing her own skill set and service base to be able to offer business solutions.
Jennifer is a full-time accountant who works in Canberra as the commute is achievable from Yass, and in 2016 she started attracting a client base for her own business which is mobile. Her services include accounting and traditional bookkeeping with a focus on strategic direction and helping her clients make critical business decisions rather than just crunching numbers.
She says she utilised the Yass Valley Business Chamber as a platform to get to know other businesses in the region and educate people on the value of having a mobile bookkeeper. She has established business networks which has led to opportunities and shaping what her business does and how she does it.
And the local people have played a major role in her success to date. Jennifer and her husband love the strong sense of community in Yass Valley, the many opportunities and the groups to be involved in to easily meet like-minded people. In the future she hopes to grow a larger client base, but says it’s not about the number of clients you have, it’s the value that you provide. Sound advice.

Yass Valley Tyre Service - Canberra Region
Strike while the iron is hot, isn’t that what they say. In the case of Brad and Emma Davis, perhaps it was actually a tyre iron.
This Yass Valley couple saw a great opportunity with a local business, Yass Valley Tyre Service, that was struggling at the time and probably on its way out. Quick thinking, some business changes and the pair has now built the business back up again, and it has paid off.
They bought Yass Valley Tyre Service in 2014 and extended the business interests, taking on the mobile truck service and offering a 24-hour breakdown service for all motorists – a crucial part of the business given that Yass is strategically located on the junction of five major highways and on the major touring route between Sydney and Melbourne.
As well as the prime location, they credit the business’ success to strong support from the locals, their focus on great customer service, the expertise that can be found in Yass – they now employee five locals - and having a family oriented business. They are also quick to note the recent and planned developments in the region, which make Yass almost an extension of Canberra, but with room to move. There is definitely a lot of opportunity here.
Brad and Emma say they love working in this country town. The pair has always had a strong connection to the country, and although Emma spent years commuting to Canberra to work, they have made Yass their home. They have chosen to raise their young children in Yass, with Emma also able to run her successful internet business, which has a global following, on the side.
They say it’s the type of town where you really get to know your customers, the local baristas, people at the supermarket, the neighbours, you get to drive through sheep country every day and it’s a lovely place to be.
