At the crossroads of the North Sea and North-east Atlantic, Lerwick’s modern harbour is Britain’s ‘top’ port and the most northerly working harbour in the country. The deep-water port sees over 5,000 vessels berth and depart from the harbour each year, bringing in essential supplies as well as delicious fresh seafood and produce that you can find in local restaurants and bars.
Lerwick is Shetland’s main town and is a gem in itself. With a proud maritime heritage, the town has blossomed into the bustling port we know today, which brings in trade, business and visitors to the isles. Visit the museum and learn about the archives and rich heritage of Shetland, wander along the harbour for spectacular views, explore Shetland Textile Museum to admire tweed, craft and knitwear from local artists, and head to the local brewery for a dram or two.
