Chinese Wooden Pagoda Enters Guinness World Records as World's Tallest
An almost thousand-year-old wooden pagoda in north China’s Shanxi Province was certified as the tallest wooden pagoda in the world by the Guinness World Records on Wednesday.
The Sakyamuni Pagoda of Fogong Temple in Yingxian County currently stands as the oldest and tallest wooden architectural structure in China at 67.3 meters high, and has a base 30.3 meters in diameter, with nine storeys, five of which are still in use.
The pagoda, built in 1056 during the reign of Qingning in Liao Dynasty, has weathered countless conflicts and natural disasters.
It is considered to be one of the three most spectacular towers in the world alongside the Leaning Tower of Pisa in Italy and the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Datong, China: Nine Dragon Screen & Huayan Si Monastery
After you visit the fabulous Yungang Cave Temples, the only other two sites worth visiting are the colorful Nine Dragon Screen and Huayan Si Buddhist Monastery.
It may take a whopping 10 minutes to visit both sites and...hey...there's nothing else to do in Datong so you may as well make the effort and see them.
Datong City Wall and Huayan Monastery
Take a stroll along Datong's recently rebuilt City Wall. Walking along this new version of the historical structure, you can see both ancient and modern Datong on either side of the wall. From there, visit the Buddhist Huayan Monastery. This massive temple was also renovated in the 2000's, and it is now ten times bigger than the original.

This 20-storey equivalent ALL-WOOD tower was built in 1056. It has withstood multiple earthquakes till in 1920 a local official, in an attempt to improve the fung shui, weakened the structure and as a result the tower is now leaning a few degrees to one side.

China: The Wooden Pagoda & Jinci Si
The Wooden Pagoda is the oldest wooden building in China and was built in 1056. Octagonal, with nine internal floors but we could only climb up to the second level...high enough since the stairwell was pitch black. Lunch, and then on to Jinci Si...
Jinci Si had impressive gardens, flowering trees, ancient trees over 1,000 years old and various temples. The Hall of the Holy Mother was constructed in the Jin dynasty and is attributed with magical powers.
