Heublein Tower At Talcott Mountain, Connecticut
Heublein Tower, originally referred to as Heublein Castle, was built by Gilbert Heublein as a summer home and gift to his wife-to-be. Today, the castle located atop Talcott Mountain, or as some would say Avon Mountain, on the Metcomet Trail, in Talcott Mountain State Park is a popular place to hike for panoramic views. I pieced together this footage after hiking up the trail on a crisp summer day. At the start of the first video footage, some background noise of others on the trail will be heard, but once I enter the castle, or tower if you prefer, the filming was relatively devoid of background voices though occasional natural echoing from the stone walls from within the castle are somewhat audible. I narrated the video footage while taking the clips and took some photos as well to insert when later stringing together the video footage. Today, the castle is listed on the National Registry of Historic Sites and is opened to the public in good weather usually starting Memorial Day at the end of May and running through to October when the park is in peak foliage for the autumn colors.
For those interested in when the castle was first built, construction started in 1914 and ended in 1917. The castle was modeled to look like a Bavarian Castle, which explains its towering height and narrow structure.
Some additional information from the Talcott Mountain State Park's website provides information about Talcott Ridge, where Heublein Tower is located:
The 1,000-foot high promontory provides a splendid view of the Connecticut landscape. On the horizon, Mount Monadnock, eighty miles away in New Hampshire, is discernible. To the northwest, the Berkshires dominate the horizon. Long Island Sound is revealed as a thin blue streak to the south. Those with sharp vision can see an area estimated to be 1,200 square miles.
In 1999, The New York Times ran a review of the tower, calling it Tower of Romance, Tower of History. Find the review at:

The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family
The relationship between Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings has been a subject of speculation for centuries and even more so in the past decade, when DNA testing increased evidence of a sexual liaison. Author Annette Gordon-Reed, who received attention in 1997 for a book that carefully evaluated claims and counter-claims about the Jefferson-Hemings relationship, has written a new book about Sally Hemings - a slave in the Founding Father's household - and her family. Gordon-Reed's book chronicles the Hemings family from the mid-1700s, when an English sea captain fathered a child by an enslaved woman living near Williamsburg, Va., to the early 19th-century story of Sally Hemings.
Speaker Biography: Annette Gordon-Reed is a professor of law at New York Law School. Her 1997 book was titled Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy. She also co-authored Vernon Can Read!: a Memoir (2001) with Vernon Jordan, longtime civil rights leader and presidential confidante. In Gordon-Reed's 2002 book Race on Trial: Law and Justice in American History, she edits 12 original essays that illustrate how race often determined the outcome of trials and how trials that confront issues of racism provide a unique lens on American cultural history.

⁴ᴷ⁶⁰ Walking NYC (Narrated) : Little Italy, Manhattan (August 16, 2019)
Google Maps Route:
From Wikipedia:
Little Italy (Italian: Piccola Italia) is a neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, New York City, once known for its large population of Italian Americans. Today the neighborhood consists of only a few Italian stores and restaurants. It is bounded on the west by Tribeca and Soho, on the south by Chinatown, on the east by the Bowery and Lower East Side, and on the north by Nolita.
Little Italy on Mulberry Street used to extend as far south as Worth Street, as far north as Houston Street, as far west as Lafayette Street, and as far east as Bowery. It is now only three blocks on Mulberry Street. Little Italy originated as Mulberry Bend. Jacob Riis described Mulberry Bend as the foul core of New York's slums. During this time period Immigrants of the late 19th century usually settled in ethnic neighborhoods. Therefore, the mass immigration from Italy during the 1880's led to the large settlement of Italian immigrants in lower Manhattan. The results of such migration had created an influx of Italian immigrants which had led to the commercial gathering of their dwelling and business.
Bill Tonelli from New York magazine said, Once, Little Italy was like an insular Neapolitan village re-created on these shores, with its own language, customs, and financial and cultural institutions. Little Italy was not the largest Italian neighborhood in New York City, as East Harlem (or Italian Harlem) had a larger Italian population. Tonelli said that Little Italy was perhaps the city's poorest Italian neighborhood. In 1910 Little Italy had almost 10,000 Italians; that was the peak of the community's Italian population. At the turn of the 20th century over 90% of the residents of the Fourteenth Ward were of Italian birth or origins. Tonnelli said that it meant that residents began moving out to more spacious digs almost as soon as they arrived. Such a vastly growing community impacted the U.S. labor movement in the 20th century by making up much of the labor population in the garment industry.
After World War II, many residents of the Lower East Side began moving to Brooklyn, Staten Island, eastern Long Island, and New Jersey. Chinese immigrants became an increased presence after the U.S. Immigration Act of 1965 removed immigration restrictions, and the Manhattan Chinatown to Little Italy's south expanded. In 2004, Tonelli said, You can go back 30 years and find newspaper clips chronicling the expansion of Chinatown and mourning the loss of Little Italy.
