DRIVING THRU ITALY TO FLORENCE, TUSCANY, ROME, POMPEII, SORRENTO & AMALFI, Our Ancient Civilization Trip
Our two week Ancient Civilization trip continues. We leave Greece and Fly to Italy. We start in Florence. Here we stay at the Sina Villa Medici Marriott Autograph Hotel. This property is in a great location for walking everything in the historic area of Florence. We climbed the duomo (make sure to make your reservations as only so many people can climb at once). We visited the Medici Palazzo (house) and walked the Ponte Vecchio (the bridge with the houses on it). We tried to attend church but with a marathon going on we could not make it as the running line trapped us in the historic center. I had the best truffle pasta at Hostaria Il Desco.
After Florence we loaded into our 9 passenger van, which makes total sense in the USA and not so much in ancient cities; and drove thru Tuscany on our way down to Rome. We did the Chianti region which was beautiful, full of charm, and even though it was rainy and cold the hills were still full of color.
In Rome we stayed at the Marriott Grand Hotel Flora, here we had a two bedroom which was fun to be all together. This hotel is next to the ancient wall and close to the Vatican City. The first morning we headed out early to the Vatican City. Here we had a tour guide so we skipped the line into the museum, saw the Sistine Chapel, St Peters Basilica and admired all the marble.
Afterwards we headed toward the Colosseum and had a 2 hour lunch at a restaurant that really knows how to make yummy soup. Gli Angeletti its on Via dell'Angeletto, 3, Roma
After warming up with soup we headed over to the Colosseum ran around for a bit, then took a crazy cab ride back to the hotel.
That night steer being exhausted from a long day we stayed in with room service.
The next morning we packed up and drove down to Pompeii. This was what Turner really wanted to see on this trip. Pompeii was much larger than I ever thought and we spent about 2 hours walking thru the 165 acre complex.
Then we continued on to Sorrento where we had an AirB&B in the heart of Sorrento. The location and space was great. In fact its by a Super Host and overall it was fine and would work for my family of 6 if we returned.
However, I don't know if I will ever go back to Sorrento or the Amalfi coast. I felt like its this hyped up place but in all honesty there really isn't anything special. We all agreed it felt like the whole area had been turned into a destination for cruise ships, the food isn't great and everything about it feels extremely tourist. Solerno at the end of the coast is actually better. Still we had trouble finding well prepared food. We were not on a budget but seriously finding really well prepared food in Italy was difficult no matter what we spent. Its frustrating because you think Italy will have amazing food flowing everywhere but the truth is that because so many areas only cater to tourists I think they lower their quality and change the authenticity to suit what travelers think they want. I had the best luck with soups. The truffle pasta in Florence and actually the pizza crust in Sorrento was really good.
After Sorrento, we drove back to Rome and took a flight to Istanbul. Turkey is a true highlight of this trip.

ROAD TRIP IN ITALY! (Rome to Amalfi Coast)
Went on a roadtrip from Rome to Amalfi Coast, Italy few weeks ago with my friends and I did not expect the roads to be as crazy! Took a train from Rome to Naples and rented out two SUV's for 500 Euros each for 6 days so that we can drive around Amalfi coast and you'll find out how to get to areas like Pompeii, Ravello, Sorrento and Positano. Traveling around Italy can be expensive but I highly suggest for you to buy your food in grocery stores to save a lot of money. I really travel on a budget but there are times that I really have no choice but to spend on transportation, accommodation and food. I also got a lot of questions on how to drive in Europe; all you need is your driver's license and passport at all times when driving and you're only allowed to drive for 3 months. If you wish to drive for 1 year in Europe, you can apply for an International drivers license in your country before leaving.

The BEST Amalfi Coast Driving Tour! 4K UHD
Enjoy a 4K UHD tour along Italy's most beautiful coastline, The Amalfi Coast (Italian: Costiera Amalfitana) in this episode of Prowalk Tours. The Amalfi Drive, formerly known as the SS 163, is considered to be the most scenic stretch of coastline in Europe and one of the best coastal drives in the world. Unfortunately, when you are stuck in a car or in a bus, it is not possible to get a good view. In this scooter video, you will get the best possible view for the entire 80 km (50 miles). This video was filmed on September 7th, 2019. I started the day by renting a scooter at Jollyrents in Sorrento (link below). I mounted two cameras, the DJI Osmo Pocket and the Insta360 One X. The Osmo pocket video was filmed in 4K at 60fps. At minute 1:17:59, the Osmo Pocket camera battery died so the remaining part of the video is from the Insta360 One X camera. To see the 360 version of this drive, click on the following link: Let's go for a drive!

Driving the twisting roads of the Amalfi Coast. See what it's really like.
Take a funny look at the challenging driving on the Amalfi Coast. Crazy Italian drivers passing on blind curves, tailgating, and crossing over the line. The Amalfi Coast Road is curvy, narrow with cliff on one side and the air and sea on the other. You share the road with huge buses, tandem trailers, center lane driving scooters and motorcycles, cyclists and teeny cars hugging your butt. Enjoy this video and then if you like, check out our funny experiences during our three week voyage through Italy. Learn how to travel with kids--we had our 11 year old son along. Driving in Italy - The Amalfi Coast - Sorrento to Ravello
This is a video about driving in Italy. It is a full length drive along the Amalfi Coast from Sorrento to Ravello. Use the 'Speed' in 'Settings' to play this faster - Turn off the sound if you don't want to hear our comments.
We took this drive off season in March. It took us close to two hours to drive 17 miles so you can imagine how high season would be.
(I used a Crosstour CR900 Dash Cam to record this.)
On the plane home I made this note about driving in Italy:
Traffic flowed
No road rage
No hostility
Cooperative
Aggressive
Giving
Fair
Assertive
Patient
Forgiving
In a symbiotic relationship
Felt like being in a family
Respectful
Helpful
Not much texting and driving, like they take driving serious
People were going super slow and super fast but most were going moderately.
Saw no accidents
Felt like we were all water flowing
Not a lot of stopping at stop signs
They stopped at lights
There no ownership of roads or lanes
I saw one police car in 1200 miles of driving
~~~~~~~~~
As to who should drive in Italy and who shouldn't:
If you’re music preference is:
Improvisational, do
If it is Classical, don’t.
When cooking or baking, if you follow the recipe to a T, don’t.
If you put a little of this and a little of that into a recipe, do.
If you are a hacker, do.
If you believe antivirus software will protect you , don’t.
If you believe you have to be able to do something before you try it, don’t.
if you believe that a part of learning is making mistakes, do.
If you see the world in black-and-white, don’t.
If you see the world in shades of gray, do.
If you ever order something off a menu and you have no idea what it is, do.
If you only oerder what you already know, don't
If you are territorial and believe in ownership, don’t.
If you get along collectively with people, do.
If you have ever used the phrase “he who hesitates is lost“, do.
If you tend to be a nice driver and let people into your lane, don’t.
If you tend to be an defensive person, don’t.
If you can transition between aggressiveness and giving, do.
If you were judgmental, don’t.
If you are forgiving, do.
if you believe in following every law & rule, don’t.
If you tend to think of rules as suggestions, do.
if you are a road rager, don’t.
If you believe people can cut you off while driving, don’t.
If you feel everyone should follow the rules of the road, don’t.
If you believe lanes are designed to indicate where cars travel, don’t.
If you sometimes like driving really slow and do it in the right lane, do.
If you believe there’s a speed limit and everyone should follow it, don’t.
If you believe the left lane is for passing, do.
If you believe there’s a speed limit and it doesn’t matter what lane you’re in, don’t.
I hope this helps!
Day on Amalfi Coast with Gianluca Bianco
This 28 minute video captures our 8 1/2 hour tour of Amalfi with our driver/guide Gianluca Bianco
Sorrento & Amalfi by Land & Sea
Enjoy a very scenic and relaxing excursion, experiencing Italy's most famous coastline by motor launch, with minimal walking involved, and time within the beautiful village of Sorrento. After an approximate one-hour drive by coach, you will arrive to the town of Salerno, located at the very end of the Amalfi Coast. There you'll board a private motor launch and enjoy a 45-minute cruise, viewing the Dolomitic cliffs, which at many points, tower perpendicularly out of the sea and have been sculpted by nature into fantastic shapes. Amalfi is situated at the mouth of a deep gorge along the coast. Learn how this was a major shipping port during the Middle Ages and it was also an independent maritime state. Enjoy a narrated walk around the town center of Amalfi, with your guide, who will explain the history and architecture of the Cathedral of St. Andrew as you marvel at the exterior architecture, a mix of Moorish and early Gothic design. Its main treasures are the 11th-century bronze doors from Constantinople. Enjoy some free time on your own in Amalfi, for maybe shopping or relaxation, before cruising back to Salerno where your coach will be waiting to drive you to Sorrento. With its luxuriant vegetation and sun-drenched climate, Sorrento became a favorite resort of wealthy Romans. Experience this cliff-top setting, with an imposing Duomo, distinctive for its 13th-century cloister, and a charming, flower-filled town, all there for you to explore. Enjoy lunch with wine in a local restaurant in Sorrento before returning back to your ship.
Note: Tour is not available for winter sailings. Guests must be able to walk approximately 500 yards over even surfaces with 5 - 10 steps. There are several steps to access the lunch venue. Comfortable walking shoes, hat, and sunscreen are highly recommended. Walking during the free time is at the guests' discretion. The drive between Naples and Salerno is approximately 45 minutes and from Sorrento to Naples is approximately 1 1/2 hours. Guests wishing to enter the Cathedral of St. Andrew on their own must ascend approximately 60 or more very steep steps. The order of the tour may be reversed. The motor launch has both inside and outside seating. In case of bad weather conditions and/or rough seas, the cruise to Amalfi will be cancelled and an orientation drive of Naples will be made instead. Due to traffic restrictions of the Sorrento center a short walk from the motorcoach drop off point to the main center and vice versa will be required. During summer months expect extreme heat, crowded venues and long lines. We recommend that you dress in layers and bring bottled water.
