Nikopolis, the largest ancient city in Greece
Nikopolis or Nicopolis (the city of victory) is an ancient city that was built on 31 B.C by by the Roman emperor Gaius Julius Caesar Octavianus (Augustus) to celebrate his victory over Antony and Cleopatra at the Battle of Actium. It is located about eight kilometres away from Preveza, in Epirus region and spread over a great area of 1,500 hectares.
Among the most important monuments of Roman Nikopolis are:
1. The Roman Odeon, which is located on the west side of the old Christian Wall and it includes the auditorium, the orchestra and the stage. It was built in the 1st century AD and remained in use until the second half of the 3rd century AD.
2. Basilica A was founded by Bishop Doumetios (525-575 AD) and is decorated with elaborate mosaics, combining floral and pictorial motifs.
3. Basilica B, built at the time of Bishop Alkison, who was active during the reign of Emperor Anastasios (491-518 AD).
4. The Theatre, which is located south-east of the monument of Augustus. The scene is high, probably two floors, with three arched entrances.
5. The monument of Augustus. It was founded by Octavian-Augustus, 31 BC, after the battle of Aktion and it was dedicated to Mars, Poseidon and Aktion Apollo.
Please note that the main entrance of the site, the monument of Augustus and the theatre are about a ten minute drive!
Many of the findings from excavations in Nikopolis are hosted in Archaeological Museum, 5 km away from Preveza. Click here to watch the video:

Zalongo and ancient Kassope - ΖΑΛΟΓΓΟ και αρχαία Κασσώπη
Zallongo, Preveza, Greece and ancient Kassope
The Souliot Women and the Dance of Zalongo
The song is ΔΕ ΜΕ ΒΑΡΟΥΝ ΤΑ ΞΕΝΑ - De me varoun ta ksena, taken from GUARDIANS OF HELLENISM VOL 8 EPIRUS.
The dance of Zalongo (Ο Χορος του Ζαλογγου) is an act of bravery that is honored in Greece today. The souliote women were on the mountain of Zalongo, in Preveza (Πρεβεζα), near the ancient Greek city of Cassope (Κασσόπη ). They were being hunted by Ali Pasha's men, and instead of surrendering and becoming their concubines, the souliote woman began to dance and one at a time, each fell down the mountain.

From Preveza to Missolonghi (Epirus, Western Greece) - Greece HD Travel Channel
After a short stay at Nicopolis, we reach Preveza.
The port town lies opposite the Aktio peninsula, at the exit of the Ambracian Gulf. This bay was the location of the historically significant naval battle between Octavian, later Emperor Augustus, and Marcus Aurelius and his beloved Cleopatra. Octavian defeated Marcus Aurelius, who then fled with Cleopatra to Egypt, where both chose suicide.
Before we continue south, we visit the ancient city of Kassope.
Kassope or Cassope was founded around 350 BC. After the founding of Nicopolis, Augustus ordered the move, resulting in that Kassope was abandoned. The ancient city impresses by its location, high on a rocky plateau. From here you can see the whole region up to the Ambracian Gulf.
The precisely carved stone blocks of the walls testify to the craftsmanship of the builders. The ancient theater can only be imagined. The importance of the town can be seen from the fact that it had its own coins.
From here, one has a marvelous view of Zalongo.
410 steps lead to the memorial for the Dancing Women of Zolongo. After their men had fallen in 1803 in the fight against the Ottomans, 63 women danced the Souliotic Round Dance with their children. After each round, one of them fell down to escape capture and maltreatment by the Turks.
Next destination is Arta.
Pyrrhus, the king of the Greek tribe of Molossians, made Arta the capital of his empire in 295 BC. Later it was the capital of the Despotate of Epirus. The impressive palatial church dates from that time.
Especially worth seeing is the arched bridge, built in the 17th century. The bridge collapsed several times during the construction work. The legend says that the master builder had his wife walled in to maintain the necessary stability for the bridge,

Zalongo - a historical place where over 60 women and their children were tragically killed (December 16, 1803)
In order not to be captured by Ali Pasha, they were throwing their children off the top of the cliff and then holding hands, singing and playing one by one falling from the cliff.
In their honor, because they chose death rather than misery and shame, a 13m tall, 18m long monument was made with six abstract female figures holding hands. The construction of the monument lasted 6 years (1954-1960).
The story is passionate but the place is definitely worth a visit.
