Mehr als eine Bibliothek
Jubiläumsfilm der ZB von Anka Schmid
Zurich’s Main Library, Zentralbibliothek, Zürich
Over 6 million documents are stored in this beautiful library building. The Zentralbibliothek of Zurich serves the cantonal, city, and university of Zurich, making it one of the biggest libraries in Switzerland. It is also the oldest cultural establishment in Zurich. Among the millions of documents in this library, you will find academic work on all disciplines taught at the University of Zurich, with an emphasis on the liberal arts and social sciences. Additionally, you will find all publications by Zurich publishing houses, all works from Zurich authors, and all works about Zurich. Of course, the library also offers a variety of popular books as well, ranging from travel to crime thrillers and everything in between. This library contains five special collections including: Graphics, Manuscripts, Maps, Music, and Old Prints. You can also participate in guided tours, training courses, and continuing education courses at the Zentralbibliothek.

Zurich Travel Guide - Unforgettable Switzerland Dreams
Zurich Travel Guide - Unforgettable Switzerland Dreams
Zurich (German: Zürich, Zürich German: Züri) is the largest city in Switzerland, with a population of some 390,000 in the city proper and 1.2 million in the agglomeration area. Zurich is on Lake Zurich, where the lake flows into the River Limmat , in the north of Switzerland. Zurich is the largest city of the Swiss Confederation (Switzerland) by land area and population. It is the financial center of Switzerland and houses the stock exchange and the headquarters of a large number of national and international companies, and also home of FIFA's headquarters.
You also find Google's world-wide second largest development center in Zurich. Because Zurich is the central node of the Swiss-wide train network and also runs the biggest and busiest international airport in the country, it generally is the first place where tourists arrive. Because of the city's close distance to tourist resorts in the Swiss Alps and its mountainous scenery, it is often referred to as the portal to the Alps.
Contrary to a generally wrongly made assumption, Zurich is not the capital of Switzerland -- the Swiss are very much a confederation of Cantons and avoid naming any one city as capital in order to prevent that Canton from seeming more important than the others. Still, the federal government is headquartered in Berne and not Zurich. Zurich has long been known for being clean and efficient. Due to this, it has been continuously ranked as the city with the highest living standard world-wide for many years. However, only for the last fifteen years it has truly become a fascinating and worthwhile travel destination. This is mostly thanks to the liberalization of the party (more than 80 clubs are open at weekends) and gastronomy sectors (over 500 bars and more than 1500 restaurants). An increasingly cosmopolitan population has helped (every third inhabitant is a foreigner), as well, though more button-down Geneva remains Switzerland's most culturally heterogeneous city. Zurich always used to be well known for a demanding audience in opera/ballet, classical concerts, and theater. You find more than 50 museums and over 100 galleries in a inner city circle.
Zürich is famous for its highly efficient, clean and safe public transport system, owned by the several municipal transport agencies and managed by the Zürcher Verkehrsverbund (ZVV), which covers the entire canton of Zürich, plus some municipalities in bordering cantons for the passenger's convenience (in fact the 18x fare zones and some stops in zone 155). The network includes trams, buses (local city/municipality buses as well as the yellow bright Swiss PostAuto buses), suburban trains (S-Bahn), regular trains (SBB), cable cars and boats.
The quintessential Zürich dish is Zürigeschnätzlets, chopped veal in a cream and wine sauce, normally served with Rösti. Various kinds of grilled Würste (sausages, singular: Wurst) are also popular. These are most often accompanied by boiled potatoes, or Rösti, a kind of hash-browns, just much better (boiled potatoes then grated, then pan fried in butter until crisp) or Chnöpfli (small noodle dumplings, in Germany called Spätzle).
Zurich is the financial centre of Switzerland and most travellers come with an expense account. The hospitality sector focuses therefore mostly on the 4 and 5 star hotels. Zurich is known for its superb hotels, but these won't come cheap. Best is to go on a company rate, because rack rates are sometimes ridiculous.

Lenin: Spiegelgasse 14 in Zurich, Switzerland
Valdimir Ilyich Ulyanov, or Lenin, was born in 1870 in Simbrisk. Lenin
adopted Marxist ideology while studying law at Kazan University. Lenin was exiled from Russia for political reasons in 1895. While in exile he resided in Siberia, Germany, and Switzerland. You will see his home in Zurich, Switzerland in this video. He resided here with his wife, Nadeshda Krupskaja, for 1 year. They lived on Spiegelgasse 14 close to Cabaret Voltaire. While living here he completed his book Imperialism as the Highest Stage of Capitalism.
In their free time, Lenin and his wife, enjoyed visiting Zurichberg where they would lie in the grass, enjoying Swiss chocolates. It is unclear whether or not Lenin visited the Cabaret Voltaire, the origin of Dadaism. But his proximity to this location has led many to wonder if he was a secret Dadaist.
During his time in Zurich, Lenin tried to divide the Social Democratic party. His goal was to start a armed movement that would inspire popular revolution against capitalism in Switzerland and other parts of the world. He gathered a few followers, but many left wing sympathizers were not interested in his work.
For the other 5 years they spend in Switzerland they lived in Geneva and Bern. But they found Zurich to hold the most opportunity for Linin’s political goals. Zurich offered him access to central library, which played a large role in helping him finish his book. Additionally, he expected to find support from the Social Democratic Party in Zurich after receiving little support at the secret Bernese conferences, Zimmerwald and Kiental, for political activists who dissociated from the European left (1915-1916). The start of WWI led European socialists back to their countries and governments to offer support, overpowering Lenin’s dreams of a revolution.
Lenin finally returned to Russian in 1917 when the Russian Revolution began. Upon his return the Bolsheviks, the party Lenin led, gained control of the revolution. As a result Lenin became the leader he had aspired to be. He later died in 1924 at the age of 54 due to a terminal illness.
