RAINBOW MOUNTAINS of CHINA: Why You Need To Visit Zhangye
China's Rainbow Mountains can be found in the Danxia Landform Geopark near the city of Zhangye. We took a day trip by train and spent the day exploring the different mountains and rock formations during the day and at sunset.

Here's a rundown of everything we did in Zhangye:
Getting the train from Xining to Zhangye - 0:57
The views from the train onto the Chinese countryside was pretty spectacular.
Hiring a private car for the day - 1:17
We met some other travellers in our hostel and decided to share a private car and driver to take us around for the day. This was also good as we had our big backpacks with us!
Exploring Danxia National GeoPark - 1:33
Looking around the more peaceful side of the park, which looks a lot like the national parks of Australia or the US. There are buses that you can get all around the park.
Visiting the Rainbow Mountains at Sunset - 3:07
Exploring the many boardwalks of the Danxia Landform GeoPark. The views are pretty spectacular, but you need to go and find the quieter spots.
Final Thoughts on the Rainbow Mountains - 4:19
Why I thought this was the best day we had in China: Expect the unexpected!

Zhangye Danxia Landform, China
It is located at Zhangye Danxia Landform Geological Park in Gansu Province, a remote region in northern central China. ('Danxia' is the name for a type of rockform, 'Zhangye' being this particular location.)

Zhangye 's Danxia was formed by the erosion of red sandstone, forming isolated peaks and steep stratified outcrops. Its special geological structure, combined with long-term desert conditions , freeze-thaw peeling, and wind and water erosion gave rise to its present appearance.
Geologists believe that Danxia topography is formed by folding of layered oceanic crust. Exposed slanting rock layers have different colors, textures, shapes, sizes, and patterns. The combination of differences in density and erosion create towering peaks, cave holes, and stone halls.

About the Video
On my second day in Zhangye China, I headed out of town to one of the most spectacular sights in all of Asia. The mountains are a Danxia Landform and the locals like to call them the Rainbow Mountains.
China's Rainbow Mountains live up to the billing, although if you've seen the images elsewhere you know that they were 1) photoshopped pretty hard, and 2) shot at a time of year where there was far more green. When I made it to the Danxia Rainbow Mountains, the scene was pretty yellow and orange because the dry season had already kicked in.
Anyways, this episode is the getting the shot variety which means that I take you through the process of getting an image from start to finish. This is a fairly simple landscape image so there's nothing that's overly complicated about it. In the end, I show off two images from the Danxia Landform Mountains and show you how I edited them using Lightroom 5.

Incredible Rainbow Mountains at Zhangye China
These are the beautiful Danxia Landforms right outside of Zhangye, in Gansu, China. This is right on the southern edge of the Gobi Desert in Northern China. I went there to photograph landscapes and it was incredible! The colors were intense - the geology of it all was amazing.
The park is right outside the city of Zhangye. We stayed at the Kelly Business Hotel and it was perfect. The people are great in Zhangye and very helpful to travelers. The hotel allowed us to contract their driver in a comfortable minivan that drove us out to the mountains in the afternoon, waited for us for several hours, then drove us back to the city.
The trip was an incredible success and I got wonderful colorful photos of the Rainbow Mountains!

Travel to Danxia
Danxia Landforms, named after Mount Danxia in Guangdong province, are stunning geological formations that are unique to China. They were formed when red sandstone and other minerals were deposited by rivers over a period of about 24 million years. These deposits settled into distinct layers and, after another 15 million years, faults in the earth created by tectonic plate movement caused them to become exposed. Over another few millions of years, they were moulded into strange shapes by weathering and erosion, resulting in the unusual landforms that we find today. Yet the ones near Zhangye are arguably the most spectacular as, rather than just being made up of fiery red sandstone, the hills are a flurry of vibrant colours that resemble a living watercolour painting. For this reason, they have earned the nickname the “Rainbow Mountains”. Read more: asiaculturaltravel.co.uk
