Short visit of Dali (Yunnan - China)
(EN) Dali City is a county-level city in and the seat of the Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture, northwestern Yunnan province of Southwest China. Dali is the ancient capital of both the Bai kingdom Nanzhao, which flourished in the area during the 8th and 9th centuries, and the Kingdom of Dali, which reigned from 937-1253. Situated in a once significantly Muslim part of South China, Dali was also the center of the Panthay Rebellion against the reigning imperial Qing Dynasty from 1856-1863.
Dali is also famous for the many types of marble it produces, which are used primarily in construction and for decorative objects. In fact, Dali is so famous for the stone that the name of marble in Chinese is literally Dali Stone Dali is now a major tourist destination, along with Lijiang, for both domestic and international tourists. Dali and Yunnan's capital Kunming are only a 40-minute flight apart. Dali's newly finished administrative district that houses the newly opened Dali International Convention Center is in Longshan District. The Dali government's urban planning keeps its old and new districts separate, so those coming here for the first time often feel they have entered a time tunnel.
The new city is known as Xiaguan and is south of the old city. The old city was built during Ming Dynasty emperor Hongwu's reign (1368--1398). Owing to the distance between them, the old city is still peaceful and quiet. (wikipedia)

Terry Hodgkinson aka wandering ninja wanders through Dali the first of Yunnan's northwestern unique village cities.
What a beautiful village/city. The mountains all around gave the city a magical feel. Nice to see diversity in clothing from different minorities who live in Dali. Just loved the old pagodas and temples even out on Lake Dali. - Terry

From the capital city of Kunming, we took a 4-hour bus ride to Dali. In this first video from our Yunnan trip, see a little bit of downtown Kunming, some delicious Yunnan style food in Dali, and the busy streets of a night market.

The Guanyin Tang temple (Dali - Yunnan - China)
(EN) Guanyin Temple (Guanyintang in Chinese) is located in the south of Old Town of Dali, about 10 minutes' drive. Popularly enshrined and worshipped in Dali area, Guanyin has been regarded as a Patron God or Goddess of Bai minority. Buddhism in Dali could be taken as Yunnan Esoteric or Dian Mi, in which Guanyin is much more important than Buddha; experts referred to the Guanyin (Goddess of Mercy) there as Arcarya Guanyin (A Cuo Ye in Chinese) who is much slimmer than those elsewhere. It's even said that Pi Luoge, the founder of the Nanzhao Kingdom, had been nominated by Guanyin as the governor of the Six Tribes at that time. Among Buddhist temples in Dali, Guanyin temples or shrines are the majority, and Guanyin Tang or Guanyin Temple is the most famous one.

Dali Bar Goes Slacklining Outside Of Kunming, China
We're based in Kunming, the capital of Yunnan province in southwest China. It's a big city, but thankfully there's a lot of natural beauty nearby. Ever more people from local Kunmingers to foreign residents are channeling their energy and talent to take greater advantage of the great outdoors in Yunnan. One of these is our friend Peter, a talented rock climber who has developed new limestone rock climbing routes outside of Kunming. He's also quite good at slacklining. He took us out for a day recently and we shot some video of this hair-raising pursuit:
The Three Pagodas (Dali - Yunnan - China)
(EN) The Three Pagodas are an ensemble of three independent pagodas arranged on the corners of a equilateral triangle, near the town of Dali, Yunnan province, China, dating from the time of the Nanzhao kingdom and Kingdom of Dali.
The Three Pagodas are located about 1.5 km (0.9 miles) north of scenic Dali, Yunnan province. They are at the east foot of the tenth peak of the massive Cangshan Mountains and face the west shore of the Erhai Lake of the ancient Dali town. The Three Pagodas are made of brick and covered with white mud. As its name implies, the Three Pagodas comprise three independent pagodas forming a symmetric triangle. The elegant, balanced and stately style is unique in China's ancient Buddhist architectures, which makes it a must-see in the tour of Dali. The Three Pagodas, visible from miles away, has been a landmark of Dali City and selected as a national treasure meriting preservation in China.
The main pagoda, known as Qianxun Pagoda (pinyin Qian Xun Ta), reportedly built during 823-840 AD by king Quan Fengyou (劝丰佑) of the Nanzhao state, is 69.6 meters (227 feet) high and is one of the tallest pagodas in China's history. The central pagoda is square shaped and composed of sixteen stories; each story has multiple tiers of upturned eaves. There is a carved shrine containing a white marble sitting Buddha statue at the center of each façade of every story. The body of the pagoda is hollow from the first to the eighth story, surrounded with 3.3 meters (10 feet) thick walls. In 1978, more than 700 Buddhist antiques, including sculptures made of gold, silver, wood or crystal and documents, were found in the body during a major repairing work. The designers of the pagoda are supposed to have come from Xi'an, the capital of Tang Dynasty at that time and the location of another pagoda, Small Wild Goose Pagoda, which shares the similar style but is one hundred years older.
The other two sibling pagodas, built about one hundred years later, stand to the northwest and southwest of Qianxun Pagoda. They are 42.19 meters (140 feet) high. Different from Qianxun Pagoda, they are solid and octagonal with ten stories. The center of each side of every story is decorated with a shrine containing a Buddha statue.
There is a lake behind them. Named (聚影池) Juying Chi (Reflection pond), the pond is known to be able to reflect images of the Three Pagodas. (wikipedia)
