Zojo-ji Temple sits just under the Tokyo Tower and this contrast of old and new is impressive. But for me, the most beautiful, saddest and unique part of the temple is the rows and rows of clothed and decorated jizo statues, situated to the right of the main temple building.

However, temples and shrines are an exception. In Japan, it is common to visit temples and shrines on New Year's Eve (December 31) to celebrate the New Year. One well-known temple that is a very popular location during O-Shogatsu is Zojoji Temple. This is what New Year's at a Japanese temple is like!

Zōjō-ji is a Buddhist temple in the Shiba neighborhood of Minato, Tokyo, Japan. It is the Great Main Temple of the Chinzei branch of Jōdo-shū Buddhism. The main image is of Amida Buddha.
Standing next to Tokyo Tower, the temple grounds consist of some impressive structures as well as a mausoleum of the Tokugawa family and a small museum.

Zojoji Temple is a Buddhist temple located in the Minato area of Tokyo. The original temple was built in 1393 and was relocated to its present location by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1598. Zojoji Temple has a strong association with the Tokugawa family, who ruled Japan during the Edo Period (1603-1868), and was the family temple. It is home to the mausoleum of six Tokugawa Shoguns. The temple complex once contained 48 subsidiary temples, over 3000 priests and 150 temple schools.

Walking around Zojoji Temple and Tokyo Tower in Shiba, Minato-ku, Tokyo on 3 Jan 2020.
The route starts from Daimon Gate to Sangedatsumon Gate of Zojoji Temple. After passing through the gate, I then walk straight to the main hall to pay homage to lord buddha. After that I visited Ankokuden inside the temple. After hearing new year chant by monks, I visited the mausoleum of Tokugawa Shogun but unfortunately the mausoleum had already been closed at the time. Then, I left the temple compounds and walk directly to Tokyo tower nearby. It was a peaceful New Year.

San'en-zan Zōjō-ji ( San'en-zan Zōjō-ji?) is a Buddhist temple in the Shiba neighborhood of Minato, Tokyo, Japan. It is the Great Main Temple of the Chinzai sect of the Shingon school. The main image is of Amida Buddha. The founder of Zōjō-ji was Yūyo Shōsō
Shūei (, 809-884), a disciple of Kūkai, founded a temple named Kōmyō-ji (光明寺) at Kaizuka (貝塚, present-day Kōjimachi in Chiyoda, Tokyo); it is said to be the forerunner of Zōjō-ji. Centuries later, in 1393 during the Muromachi period, at the time of Yūyo Shōsō, the temple converted from the Shingon to the Jōdo school. Shōsō is thus the founder of the present-day temple.
Together with Kan'ei-ji, during the Edo period Zōjō-ji was the Tokugawa's family temple. Tokugawa Ieyasu had the temple moved, first to Hibiya, then in 1590, at the time of expansion of Edo Castle, to its present location.
With the fall of the Tokugawa shogunate, the grounds took on the character of a public park. The temple was badly damaged in World War II, but still retains the air of a major temple. Incidentally, the place name Daimon (大門 Great Gate) refers to the gate of Zōjō-ji. The present gate is made of concrete.
