Hello everyone and welcome to our channel :)
We are Fridtjov and Julia, a travel couple from Norway and Germany on our very first trip around the world.
Here at JJ's Journey, we upload daily vlogs to collect our travel memories and share all our ups and downs along the way with you, so that you get an honest insight into how it is to travel together as a couple.
We will also try to provide you with helpful travel tips and recommendations for places to visit 2018 that we pick up together with you on the way.
The truth is, we are just an everyday couple that fell in love with travelling. We do not know yet, what the future holds for us, where we will be in one year and for how long we can afford to travel. For now we are just grateful for every single day we have the opportunity to live the life we always have been dreaming of.

#pai is a small town in the Mae Hong Soon Province of northern #thailand. It's known for its hot springs, canyon and waterfalls.
How did we get to Pai?
We traveled by minivan Prem Pracha from Chiang Mai Arcade and booked the tickets on 12go.asia website a few days in advance. Once you get to the bus station, go to the front desk to verify the tickets. The road is very windy but this wasn’t a problem for me; even though I was seating beside the driver and looked at the road the whole time. I understand that not everyone can do this, if this is your case, it wouldn't be a bad idea to prepare some tablets and a small bag in case of emergency.
Most of the suitcases/backpacks go on the roof, make sure to cover them in case it rains, some drivers put a plastic on, but some others don't. When we were going back to Chiang Mai it rained pretty heavy and the driver didn't cover the bags; our big suitcases have hard shells so fortunately nothing got wet.
What to do in Pai?
Here is what we did in two full days:
1) White Buddha on the Hill: Make sure to cover your shoulders and knees. I used my towel, otherwise you will have to hire/purchase a skirt/pants. Remember to take off your shoes at the top of the stairs. Free entrance.
2) Thai Pai Hot Springs: The entrance is 300 bath for adults and 150 for kids. The hot springs are really nice for swimming, the further down you go the colder the water is. Close to the hot springs you can buy a small basket with 3 eggs, I think the price was 35 bath. Then follow the signs until you reach the hot springs at 80°C where you can boil the eggs. This was a little bit disappointing because we left the eggs for 30 min and they were not fully cooked.
3) Pai Night Market: we really enjoyed the street food, clothes, handmade items, bars and restaurants. Good atmosphere!
4) Pembok Waterfall: as you can see in the video we couldn’t swim because it was dry season, but I have seen pictures on Google and it looks nice!. Free entrance.
5) Bamboo Bridge “Kho Ko So”: this is a 813 meters long bamboo bridge built in 2016 to allow monks to walk from the monastery to the village all year round. You can walk along the whole bridge but the temple is only open on Buddhist Days. I recommend visiting this place, especially close to sunset hours. Free entrance.
6) Pai Canyon: Perfect spot to watch the sunset, it was very busy the day we were there (you can tell by all the scooters in the parking). We arrived a little bit early (5pm) which was good because we had time to walk around and sit down to enjoy the sunset. Better to have shoes or sandals, I wouldn't recommend flip flops. Free entrance.
7) Memorial Bridge “Ta-Pai Bridge”: This bridge stands as a reminder of a wooden bridge built during the WWII to connect Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son. The original bridge was built by elephants and local villagers forced by the Japanese Army. Free entrance.
8) Mor-Peng Waterfalls: same as Pembok Waterfalls.
9) Fluid Swimming Pool: We got in for free as we were staying at The Mountain View Backpacker Guest House, but the entrance fee is 80 Baht per person and the kids are for free. The pool is nice to just hang out for the day, there is music and a bar. The mats are for free. Open everyday from 9 am to 6 pm.
Other places you can visit in/near Pai:
10) Kiu Lom View Point: We drove up there, it seemed like a nice place to sit down and relax, but the day was not clear, so the view wasn’t that great. I can't remember how much it cost but it was around 20 bath or less, you get also tea and a banana.
11) Chinese Village: we only passed by as nothing caught my attention.
12) Land Split: On tripadvisor some people loved it, others hated it. We didn’t go as we didn’t time.
13) Lod Cave: the cave is one hour and a half away from Pai. I didn’t go because I didn’t want to be seating on a scooter for 3 hours. But I think its well worth the visit.
14) Pai Bamboo Rafting: as mentioned before, this activity was not open because it was dry season (mid-April). It was beside the Memorial Bridge.
How many days should you stay in Pai ?
It always depends on what you want to do. We spent two full days in Pai and it was enough for us; if you would like to go to the Lod Cave for example, then I would add another day.
How to get around Pai ?
We rent a scooter and most of the tourist were doing the same. Its the cheapest and the handiest option but I am not going to say its the safest. Always wear your helmet and drive at a speed you feel comfortable with.
