This is a very important event because it is the first mosque built and sponsored by Spanish muslims. It is the first mosque built after a few centuries. Spanish people were the promoters of this temple, not in terms of financing but with everything concerning the project and the construction. This is the proof of a lively muslim community in Granada, open to Spain and Europe.

9. SOUNDBITE (English) Hajj Salid Nieto, muslim from Malaysia:
I've come specially from Malaysia for the opening of this new Granada mosque because I feel it is the most significant event in this century, after being more than 500 years of no building of any mosque, Granada, or Spain for the matter, being the first mosque built here right in Granada, is a special emotional significance for me. And I cannot express the happiness and joy with this opening.

STORYLINE:
The Spanish city of Granada is preparing for the opening of its first mosque since the Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula 500 years ago.
The new mosque, which is due to be opened on Thursday, was built in the historic Moorish quarter of Albaicin. The mosque complex includes an Islamic centre, gardens and a terrace looking out over the Sierra Nevada mountains and the Alhambra.
The opening of the mosque in 2003 is a symbol of religious tolerance and the result of 20 years of effort by the southern city's Muslim community, which acquired the site thanks to a donation from Libya.
500 years ago, Granada was the capital of the Moorish kingdom of Muslim sultan Boabdil. In 1492, Catholic monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella took control of the Alhambra and forced the sultan to hand over the keys to the citadel.
The new mosque's spokesman, Mohammed Azmil, told APTN that the mosque is the proof of a lively Muslim community in Granada, open to Spain and Europe. The city has an estimated Muslim population of 15,000.
After Libya provided the initial funds, the project was taken up by Sheikh Ben Mohamed al Kassimi, the Emir of Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates, who contributed with most of the four million euros (4.5 million dollars) needed to construct the mosque.
Other Muslim states, notably Morocco, Brunei and Malaysia, also contributed money.
Muslim pilgrims from around the world will be present at the opening ceremony. Hajj Salid Nieto, a Malaysian muslim came to watch closely what he calls the event of the century.

Lastly visited places bangyida of two sisters that most colorful in the Alhambra. Because of the large marble laid on the floor in two chapters called here the room of two sisters. Is it because the women who use the room? Gopgo ceiling pattern also elegant. Decor looks like lace. Faint light coming through the window. Which means they did the oral addition to this room owner? A bunch of misty moss yigotdo wondered. Called basement bathroom. There was perforated with star shaped ceiling, skylight roof thick round and was making all of the incoming light to indirect light. Is it because the moisture to overcome? Inside the bathroom tile patterns rather than caught a lot of eyes. Wall tiling is attached to the bottom of the tea ceremony but did you than just tiles originated from here. There are several spaces inside the bathroom. Should that there is a secret room? Even in a small voice whispered lovers delighted to see you clearly hear the other side jeonggyeopda.

Spain Trip 2017 #7 Granada Cathedral and Royal Chapel
The Cathedral of Granada is the second largest church in Spain. It was begun in the early 1500’s, shortly after the Reconquista, when Granada was the capital of the new worldwide Spanish Empire. But the abundance of gold leaf on the altar is not from the new world -- it’s from the local Darro River which is what originally attracted the Romans to the area. Flanking the altar on either side are busts of Adam and Eve in the round niches, and below them, the kneeling monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, architects of the Reconquista and sponsors of the new empire. The statue of St James the Moor-Slayer is a vivid reminder that the Reconquista culminated here in Granada. On display are the giant music books used by medieval choirs with beautifully decorated sheets of 16th c. Gregorian chant. The adjoining Royal Chapel is the final resting place of Ferdinand and Isabella (photography is not permitted inside so the images are from the internet). The video ends with a series of still photos taken by my wife, Pam.
Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs, Córdoba, Andalusia, Spain, Europe
The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos, also known as the Alcázar of Córdoba, is a medieval Alcázar located in the historic centre of Córdoba, Spain next to the Guadalquivir River and near the Grand Mosque. The Alcázar takes its name from the Arabic word القصر (Al-Qasr, meaning the Palace). The fortress served as one of the primary residences of Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon. In early medieval times, the site was occupied by a Visigoth fortress. When the Visigoths fell to the Umayyad conquest of Hispania, the emirs of the Umayyad Caliphate in Damascus rebuilt the structure. The Umayyads fell to the Abbasid Caliphate and the surviving member of the Umayyad Dynasty, Abd ar-Rahman I, fled to Córdoba. Abd ar-Rahman I's successors established the independent Caliphate of Córdoba and used the Alcázar as their palace. The city subsequently flourished as an important political and cultural center, and the Alcázar was expanded to a very large compound with baths, gardens, and the largest library in the West. Watermills on the nearby Guadalquivir powered water lifting to irrigate the extensive gardens. In 1236, Christian forces took Córdoba during the Reconquista. In 1328, Alfonso XI of Castile began building the present day structure on part of the site for the old fortress. Other parts of the Moorish Alcázar had been given as spoils to the bishop, nobles, and the Order of Calatrava. Alfonso's structure retained only part of the Moorish ruins but the structure appears Islamic since Alfonso used the Mudéjar style. The Alcázar was involved in the civil war where Henry IV of Castile faced a rebellion that backed his teenage, half-brother Alfonso. During the war, the Alcázar's defenses were upgraded to deal with the advent of gunpowder. At the same time, the Alcázar's main tower, now known as the Inquisition Tower was constructed. Henry's successor, Isabella and her husband Ferdinand used the Alcázar for one of the first permanent tribunals of the Spanish Inquisition and as a headquarters for their campaign against the Nasrid dynasty in Granada, the last remaining Moorish kingdom in the Iberian Peninsula. The Inquisition began using the Alcázar as one of its headquarters in 1482, converting much of it, including the Arab baths, into torture and interrogation chambers. The Inquisition maintained a tribunal here for three centuries. Boabdil was held prisoner here in 1483 until he promised to make Granada a tributary state. When Boabdil refused to surrender his kingdom in 1489, the Christians launched an attack. Isabella and Ferdinand's campaign against Granada succeeded in 1492. The same year, the monarchs met Christopher Columbus in the Alcázar as he prepared to take his first voyage to the Americas. The Alcázar served as a garrison for Napoleon Bonaparte's troops in 1810. In 1821, the Alcázar became a prison. Finally, the Spanish government made the Alcázar a tourist attraction and national monument in the 1950s. The Alcázar centers on the Patio Morisco (Courtyard of the Moriscos), another popular feature. There are two towers: the Torre de los Leones (Tower of the Lions) and the Torre de Homenaje (Tower of Homage). The latter has Gothic features including an ogival ceiling. A series of Roman mosaics and a Roman sarcophagus are displayed in the Inquisition Tower.
A Walk Around Baeza & Ubeda, Spain
Baeza, formerly also written as Baéza, is an Andalusian town in the province of Jaén in southern Spain. It lies perched on a cliff in the Loma de Úbeda, the range separating the Guadalquivir River to its south from the Guadalimar to its north. It is now principally famed for having some of the best-preserved examples of Italian Renaissance architecture in Spain. Along with Úbeda, it was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 2003. The former Visigothic bishopric of Baeza remains a Latin Catholic titular see.
Úbeda is a town in the province of Jaén in Spain's autonomous community of Andalusia, with some 36,025 inhabitants. Both this city and the neighbouring city of Baeza benefited from extensive patronage in the early 16th century resulting in the construction of a series of Renaissance style palaces and churches, which have been preserved ever since. In 2003, declared the historic cores and monuments of these two towns a World Heritage Site.

Mérida, Córdoba, Guadalajara...ciudades repetidas / Same name for different cities [IGEO.TV]
Many localities in America received its present name when the Spaniards decided to name the cities that were founded by place of origin, or to remember somewhere in Spain, regardless if the same name was used several times. Dozens of cities in Mexico are part of this phenomenon.
As an example, the city of Mérida, Yucatán is currently participating in a conference called The World Méridas where along its namesake define Spanish and Venezuelan joint tourism and cultural strategies.
United States is no exception, as many places have names of Spanish origin. Most were part of New Spain, and became a member of the country's north following the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo.
In the video we see cities such as Mérida, Córdoba, Santiago and Guadalupe.

Mountain Epiphany in Granada, Spain
Footage from the near-top of a mountain in Granada, Spain. A panoramic view of the entire city in front of us. Below us, a number of casa cuevas (cave houses). And behind us stood the majestic Sierra Nevada mountain range. Unfortunately, no photo or video can capture that visceral moment of clarity. It's those warm hearted people who live up on the mountain who perhaps possess the most spectacular view of Granada.
Bosques de la Alhambra, Hotel Washington Irving. Granada
