Day 97 - Birthday Surprise
Claire had no idea what I had planned for today. I’m not too sure how I kept it a secret either. I just knew she would love it! After an early start and a very scenic 2-hour drive through the vast Triglavski national park, we arrived at our destination. As we approached the farm, Claire knew straight away that horse riding was her first surprise of the day. We met the lovely woman (whose name has since escaped me) who I had been emailing for days trying to sort this. We both got our horses and headed to the Paddock. I don’t know much horse terminology, I have learnt the odd words from Claire. In the paddock, Claire was pretty much left to do her own thing with her horse and I was being taught by the tour guide. She was pretty impressed with me but my downstairs did start to hurt after leaning forward countless times. After around 30 minutes here, we headed on a hack around the beautiful scenery and the horses went into a river whilst we were on the back, it was very cool. We headed back and had a long discussion with our tour guide about scenery and her animals. She had some Pony’s and rabbits. The rabbits were so cute and friendly, but we were devastated once she mentioned she raises them for food. We hopped in the car and headed for Claire's second surprise, canyoning. We almost missed our appointment as we arrived at the wrong place and had our lunch in the car. It left us around 10 minutes to drive to the correct place and it looked like the group was ready to leave as we arrived. We quickly paid and got changed and jumped in the van. Our host was a nice guy, although he looked late 20’s and told us he was 18, which was so weird! We walked for around 30 minutes to arrive at the start of our experience. Carting wetsuits for this long makes you sweat, a lot! The whole experience was so much fun. I was so proud of Claire conquering her fear of heights and overcoming her negative view. She never stopped smiling and I’m very happy that we will be able to do things like this again. We jumped down some huge waterfalls and slid down some small ones, it was so much fun. After we finished canyoning, we headed back to Ljubljana to order a takeaway and watch some Netflix (the World Cup). In summary, it was probably one of our best days travelling, we both had so much fun and deepened our love for this charming, graceful country.

Travel around with me to Slovenia where I went horseriding on a Lippizaner. I made a roadtrip of a week and my frist experience of riding a Lippizaner was in the small city Radolca. I ride thru the field and thru the bush and I loved the character of the Lippizaner horse.
At the last day of my trip I visited the famours stud farm in Lipica. This is the place where the Lippizaner horse come from. The Lipica Stud Farm is a must visit even if you do not want to ride a horse. The terrain is beautyfull and if you want ofcourse you can ride a Lippizaner. If you are an advanced rider then you also can book special course to feel like what it is and train for high dressage.

STORYLINE
The Lipizzaner is one of the most famous breeds of horse. The elegant white stallions perform classical dressage with the Spanish Riding School of Vienna. Yet their history has not been without difficulties. In the past they were often on the verge of extinction and now they are at the heart of a controversy between Austria and Slovenia, both of which claim the Lipizzaner as part of their cultural heritage.

Horse Riding in Slovenia With Janez Kandare
Janez Kandare is a Slovenian, larger than life friend to us and a great horseman.
Here is a video of the ride out he recently organised with his horses close to village Iga Vas - Cerknica Lake - Castle Znesnik - all these places are less than an hour's drive from Ljubljana or Postojna.
You can contact us at info@lipizzanerlodge.com if you are interested to go riding with Janez Kandare.
Janez can take up to 9 riders for a ride out and if you choose, you can go out riding for more days - even across the border to Croatia!
For a ride like in this video, you should be an experienced rider but Janez can also organise a ride out for smaller groups with slower pace.
Riders in the video don't wear helmets for filming purposes in this video but we recommend all riders wearing riding helmets when riding. Photos by Edo Sega.
