LESVOS (Λέσβος) - Overview, Greece - 92 min.
Overview of Lesvos island (Λέσβος), Greece

An historic town in Macedonia that knows how to have a good time
Welcome to Serres – the town in Northern Greece that’s seen it all and has risen like a phoenix from the ashes of every catastrophe it’s ever faced. What’s its secret? You’ll discover it in the enchanting Lailia Forest, in the shade from the leafy trees at Agii Anargyri. You’ll taste it in its famous sweets and in the scent of its ouzos. You’ll recognise it in its people, who fill the nights with fun and games, and in its women who are renowned for their beauty. You’ll find that Serres will keep its promise to give you a holiday to remember.
What to do in Serres
Travel to the valley of Agii Anargyri
This lovely park infuses Serres with colour and fresh air. With cascades, brooks, spreading plane trees, an artificial lake, restaurants and cafes, it’s a perfect holiday destination for walks and picnics, especially in spring and summer.
Koulas Hill
This pine-covered hill overlooking town is not just an attractive backdrop, it contains the ruins of a once mighty Byzantine acropolis. Climb up to admire the view and you’ll also see the western tower of the fortress, Orestes’ tower, which was part of the inner wall. An inscribed foundation stone dates it to 1350, during the reign of the Serbian king Stefan Dusan.
The pristine beauty of Lailia
Go just 25km north of Serres and you’ll find yourself in the Lailia Forest, 330 hectares of pine and beech forest at an altitude of 1,849m above sea level at its highest peak, which has the unusual name of Ali Baba. The forest is a genuine paradise, home to 514 types of flora. It has been declared a Natural Monument and a region of particular Natural Beauty. Enough said. Go to this corner of Macedonia and see for yourself.
Skiing or après-ski?
If you want to ski, the Serres centre’s the place to go for great slopes and even greater fun afterwards. In its bars, clubs, cafes, restaurants, ouzeris and the famous souvlaki stands, you’ll feel the pulse and join the locals in having a good time.
In the lap of the speed gods
Step on the gas and head for the Serres racecourse, the best in Greece and the Balkans. The course meets international standards and can host Formula 3000 events. International rallies take place here and, for a small fee, anyone can test their skills in their own cars or motorbikes.
Bar Hopping in Serres
Serres is serious about partying and you’ll understand why once you spend some time with the outgoing locals of this town. Bars, clubs, cafes, restaurants, ouzeries and the well-known souvlaki joints strategically situated on downtown street corners… This is where you’ll feel the pulse of the town’s vibrant social life.
The sweets of Serres
Dusted with sugar, they look like Turkish delight, but they’re quite different. They’re called akanes and what sets them apart is fresh goat butter and spring water from Lailia. For the real thing, there are a number of traditional confectionary stores in Serres that will have you drooling in no time.
The Timios Prodromos monastery
This historic monastery lies 10km northeast of Serres in a ravine on Mt Menikios. The most noteworthy attraction in the district, it was built in the 13th century.

Main reference point in the city of Thessaloniki
Main reference point in the city of Thessaloniki was the site of the Ancient Market and the Hellenistic and Roman times.

The “Panigyria” of Santorini – the All-Welcoming Religious F
One thing that is engraved deeply in the hearts of the Greeks is their religious faith, and their love and respect for the church and the local saints. Every church has a certain day when the Saint it is dedicated to is commemorated and celebrated. On the eve of that day, the icon depicting the Saint is paraded around the village or town, followed by a procession and usually a marching band, and after its end, a large feast commences. Food and wine are in abundance, and so are traditional music and dances. These feasts, the “panigyria” are the highlight of every village, an annual centerpiece event.
In Megalochori, the church of Agioi Anargyroi celebrated its nameday on July 1st; the cobblestoned courtyard and the church’s inside are decorated with fragrant flowers, people flood in to light a candle and pay their respects, the litany is proceeded by the marching band and everyone is treated with homemade kokkinisto, a meat and potato casserole with a scrumptious tomato sauce or bean soup, olives and fresh, homemade bread. The locals treat the church as their second home, and they take great pride in cooking for its visitors. This is a great opportunity for every visitor to taste the authentic Santorini, the food the locals eat at home, simple, homemade and delicious.
Every year, the panigyria of the island attract visitors and locals alike, and it would be a misfortune to pass upon a chance to see one first hand.
The main religious feasts of Santorini, apart from the Agioi Anargyroi of Megalochori, are namely the Saint Epiphanius’ in Akrotiri on May 12th, the Prophet Elias in Pyrgos on July 20th, also celebrated in the Chapel of Prophet Elias in Imerovigli, the Agioi Efta Paides of Ephesus (the Holy Seven Youths of Ephesus) on August 4th, in a seaside cave of the caldera somewhere between Oia and Imerovigli, the Metamorfosi Sotiros (Transformation of Christ) in Pyrgos on August 6th, the Assumption Of Mary (Koimisi Theotokou) on August 15th – this is the most important religious feast of the summer, celebrated in Panagia Episkopi, but also almost all villages on Santorini. On august 29th, the feast of Saint John takes place in Perissa, and on the 24th of September the one of Panagia Myrtidiotissa in Kamari, whereas the most significant panigyri on Santorini is probably the last one of the summer, the celebration of Saint Matrona on October 20th, in Finikia. Every panigyri has its own signature dish, its own traditions and its own little wonders to admire. Many visitors also enjoy partaking in the traditonal dancing. I would definitely recommend to try and visit them all!
