7. Perama CaveGreece Perama is a town and a former municipality in the Ioannina regional unit, Epirus, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Ioannina, of which it is a municipal unit. It lies about 4 km north of central Ioannina. The town's name means passage and it lies on the northern edge of lake Pamvotis . It is famous for its cave, known as the Cave of Perama . The cave, extending five kilometres below the ground and having been explored fully only up to one kilometre, has a remarkable arrangement of stalagmites and stalactites. An 11th-century church in the town dedicated to Saint Haralambos and reputedly built by Byzantine Emperor Alexius Comnenus is in a bad state of repair and is rarely open to the general public. The Monastery Askitis probably Byzantine origin, nobody knows when it was built. Before several years the monastery hosted more than 50 monks and the last half century has been abandoned and there is no monastic life. Authorial sources indicate that the site probably was previously an ancient temple. Earthmoving work performed in order to highlight the precious religious monument. Inside the ruins of the monastery still gushes an ancient source and natural walls still dripping constantly. There are stalagmites which remind us that nature existed before the monastery. Access to the area is easy from the village Oleni from which is 6 km dirt road. The Oleni from the city of Pyrgos and Ancient Olympia is about 35-45min and the quality of the road is good .
