Darwin, capital of the Northern Territory is a great base from which to explore the Top End's many attractions. While in Darwin make sure you visit museum and it's fascinating Cyclone Tracey exhibition (Darwin was demolished by a cyclone in 1974), catch a movie at the open air deck chair cinema, feed the fish at aquascene, have a feed at the wharf precinct and check out one of the many fantastic markets.
Darwin has a unique population mix with 75% of people aged under 25 years. It is also very multicultural, having over fifty different nationalities living harmoniously together. To capture the face of Darwin, I interviewed Bow Chooiam a 17 year old first generation Thai girl who I met working at her parents stall at the Parap markets.

Aboriginal Initiation Ceremony in Borroloola, Australia (1)
After having been painted up with red ochre, young Yanyuwa daru or initiates are slowly walked to the Jamangki initiation ground by a group of men and boys, painted with clay and carrying bundles of leaves, who dance around them during their Marndiwala initiation ceremony in Borroloola. Upon arrival they are carried to their fathers by the men who accompanied them from the place where they were painted up for the ceremony.

Outback Aussie Barmaid, Australian Travel Video Guide
Out here in the outback, pubs and petrol stops are the hub of the universe. It is not unusual to travel 300 km between fuel stations. Renner Springs is one such stop, slap bang in the middle of nowhere. It is sustained by a natural spring. All fruit, vegetables and meat come from Adelaide 2,206 km south and petrol supplies are freighted 836 km from Darwin. I interviewed Jasmine, a bar maid at Renner for the last two years.

Highway 1: Australia's greatest road trip Ep1
Catherine Lawson and David Bristow, along with baby Maya, did a lap of Highway One, the road that circles Australia.
WHEN TRAVELLERS TALK ABOUT doing a 'Big Lap' of Australia, it's Highway One that excites imaginations, providing access to some of our most celebrated destinations as it skirts the mainland's coastal fringes (and also makes a short skip through central Tasmania).
At around 14,500km, Highway One is one of the longest designated road routes in the world. When the first section of the route was signposted between Brisbane and Adelaide in 1955, it was Australia's only true national highway. Today, although more direct routes crisscross the country, none are more scenic than Highway One.
Linking seven of our eight capital cities, Highway One incorporates classic drives across the Nullarbor, through the Kimberley and along Victoria's Great Ocean Road. It provides access to New South Wales' string of seaside national parks, passes through coastal towns along Queensland's Great Barrier Reef, and curves beneath giant karris in Western Australia's southwestern forests.
Travelling our own Highway One adventure for Australian Geographic, photographer David Bristow, our five-week-old baby Maya and Catherine Lawson are on the first leg of the journey, a 4300km drive west from our home base in Cairns, across the Top End to Broome. The trip includes a 700km stretch of red dirt corrugations from Normanton, past barramundi capital Burketown, through Hells Gate and across the Northern Territory border to Borroloola.
After following the Stuart Highway north to Katherine, Kakadu and Darwin, we'll backtrack and continue west for another 1500km on a lonelier path through Vic Country and across the border to WA's Bungle Bungles and the Kimberley, following the good light to Broome.
