Norton Priory
On the 1st August 2016 Norton Priory opened the doors of a brand new museum. Thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the £4.5 m new museum covers the 900 year history of the site, displaying many of the medieval and later objects discovered at Norton Priory during archaeological excavations. Visitors can explore the medieval undercroft and priory ruins, or venture further into surrounding woodland and the walled garden.

Stockport Portas Pilot - Four Years On - Update Video

In 2012, Stockport applied to become a 'Portas Pilot' town and receive funding to help transform its struggling town centre. The town's bid for funding was successful and, ever since, local people have been busy working together to make Stockport Old Town a dynamic, vibrant hub for the local community.

This video shows where the town is four years on, having invested in events and activity to make it a thriving and bustling destination for people of all ages to visit. We’ve seen the area’s evening economy start to thrive, through events like the incredibly popular Foodie Friday, a rise in the number of interactive cultural events, like the first ever Fringe Festival, and the creation of a digital and visual arts centre, Seven Miles Out, which has attracted many families back to the area.

The work of the Portas Pilot team has taken Stockport from being named the town centre with the most amount of empty shops in the UK, to being nominated at the Manchester Food and Drink awards for its revolutionary monthly street food and drink event, Foodie Friday.

Whilst we all recognise that there is still so much to be done to improve the town centre, we can all proudly reflect on our Portas Pilot experience as it has given us the chance to drive forward a creative vision for the town which we hope will be built on for years to come.

Edale - Peak District Villages

presents Edale . Edale is in fact the common name given to the whole valley. It was mentioned in the Domesday Book as Aidele, but the settlements along the valley bottom are now called Booths which is a term that came along in the 16th and 17th centuries when foresters and boothmen built shelters for their cattle and sheep. A booth was an enclosure rented from the Crown where a herdsman or settler could protect his stock from wolves. The shelters expanded to permanent dwellings and now form the hamlets of Over Booth, Nether Booth, Barber Booth, Lady Booth, Grindsbrook Booth and Ollerbrook Booth. Grindsbrook Booth is the main settlement of Edale where the church was built.
In 1894 a further form of access to Edale was achieved with the opening of the Dore and Chinley railway line which is a wonderful way to travel through the National Park from Sheffield to Manchester or Stockport.

Our day visiting Manchester, we focus on the line from Wilmsolow to Levenshulme, then head over to Hale and intermediate stations to Stockport, then head to Guide Bridge with all intermediate stations, before heading to the Intermediate Stations to Greenfield, a good mix of electric and diesel services with of course Pacers!

The Stockport Air Raid Shelters

The Stockport Air Raid Shelters are a system of almost 1 mile of underground air-raid shelters dug under Stockport, six miles south of Manchester, during World War II to protect local inhabitants during air raids.
Four sets of underground air raid shelter tunnels for civilian use were dug into the red sandstone rock below the town centre. Preparation started in September 1938 and the first set of shelters was opened on 28 October 1939. (Stockport was not bombed until 11 October 1940.) The smallest of the tunnel shelters could accommodate 2,000 people and the largest 3,850 (subsequently expanded to take up to 6,500 people.)
The largest of the Stockport Air Raid Shelters are open to the public as part of the town's museum service.
