The Mersey Valley is a lovely walking resource if you live in Manchester. Alongside the meandering River Mersey you find water parks, such as this one called the Chorlton Water Park - although calling it Chorlton is estate agent speak. Chorlton is a mile or two away and it's a reasonable area. Directly adjacent to Chorlton Water Park you find a large council house estate which no one could describe as reasonable. You have to be careful when you park your car before setting off for a walk around the lake. Why? - for the usual feral nonsense. Someone will smash your window, break open your lock, to steal anything they think might be moderately valuable.
I much prefer places like this compared to parks as such. I like parks - Fog Lane Park, Alexandra Park, Heaton Park - but they are manicured areas with an ornamental concept. A nature reserve is very different, with a concerted attempt to encourage nature as opposed to ornamental design.
This was not a major walk, merely a brief Sunday ramble. A walk such as this is, ultimately, a city-based experience. That doesn't however de-value the point of it. We have to grab nature where and whenever we can.

Episode 4: Extreme sightseeing
It wouldn't be right to bring Piers & Emma here without letting them get stuck into our countryside. Doing activities are some of the most interesting ways to see Wales. So we took them mountain biking in Afan Argoed, followed by surfing at Caswell Bay. Look past the cutting rain, punishing mountains, brutal surf and grimacing faces. In their eyes you will see the glint of activity-sport triumph. And maybe a touch of exhaustion.
