EDINBURGH, SCOTLAND | Top 5 Things To Do
These are my top five things to do in Edinburgh, Scotland! Obviously there is more than five things to do (including Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament Building, which are both great) but these are my personal favourites. Enjoy!
1) Arthurs Seat - Situated on top of the remains of an extinct volcano, known as the castle rock, Edinburgh castle is one of Scotland's most iconic sites. The castle has been under siege on 26 occasions and researchers claim it is the most besieged place in Great Britain and one of the most attacked in the world.
2) The Royal Mile - Stretching one Scots mile, roughly 1.8km, between Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood palace, the royal mile is the busiest street in Edinburgh. Along the mile, you can visit St Giles, a 14th century cathedral which acts as the principal place of worship for the Church of Scotland in Edinburgh, and is refereed to as the Mother Church of Presbyterianism.
3)Visible for miles around Edinburgh, Arthur's seat rises 822 feet above Edinburgh, and provides excellent panoramic views of the city. Its name comes from the mythology surrounding it, as it is often mentioned as one of the possible locations of Camelot, the legendary castle of King Arthur. The crags, which are found right next to Arthurs seat, provide the best views of the hill itself.
4) Found at the east end of princes street, Calton hill is part of Edinburgh's UNESCO world heritage site. The hill itself is home to a number of iconic buildings, such as the city observatory and national monument, which was based on the pantheon in Athens, and gave rise to one of Edinburgh's nicknames, the athens of the north. My favourite thing about Calton Hill, however, is the view over the centre of Edinburgh, where you can see St Giles cathedral, Scott monument, the castle, north bridge, the Balmoral hotel, the Dugald Stewart monument, and the Pentland hills all the way in the background.
5) Scott Monument - Affectionately referred to as the Gothic Rocket by Edinburgh residents, the Scott monument was built as a memorial to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. It is possible to climb up for a fee of around £4, and the highest platform is 287 steps up.

First travel alone in Scotland. Met so many people thank you all !
Landed in Glasgow, visited Stirling with the Castle, slept in Castle Rock Hostel in Edinburgh for 3 nights. Visited Edinburgh, the castle, new town, old town, Arthur's Seat... Visited Glasgow for the last two days. I'm back in Ireland for the semester 2 in my Erasmus year !

Arthur's Seat is the main peak of the group of hills in Edinburgh, Scotland which form most of Holyrood Park, described by Robert Louis Stevenson as a hill for magnitude, a mountain in virtue of its bold design.
It is situated just to the east of the city centre, about 1.6 kilometres to the east of Edinburgh Castle.
The hill rises above the city to a height of 250.5 metres, provides excellent panoramic views of the city and beyond, is relatively easy to climb, and is popular for hillwalking.
Though it can be climbed from almost any direction, the easiest and simplest ascent is from the east, where a grassy slope rises above Dunsapie Loch.
At a spur of the hill, Salisbury Crags has historically been a rock climbing venue with routes of various degrees of difficulty; however due to hazards rock climbing is now restricted to the South Quarry and a free permit is required.
Arthur's Seat is the largest of the three parts of the Arthur's Seat Volcano site of special scientific interest (the other parts being Calton Hill and the Castle Rock) which is designated to protect its important geology (see below), grassland habitats and uncommon plant and animal species.
Like the rock on which Edinburgh Castle is built, it was formed by an extinct volcano system of Carboniferous age (lava samples have been dated at 341 to 335 million years old), which was eroded by a glacier moving from west to east during the Quaternary (approximately the last two million years), exposing rocky crags to the west and leaving a tail of material swept to the east.
This is how the Salisbury Crags formed and became basalt cliffs between Arthur's Seat and the city centre.
Arthur's Seat and the Salisbury Crags adjoining it helped form the ideas of modern geology as it is currently understood.
It was in these areas that James Hutton observed that the deposition of the sedimentary and formation of the igneous rocks must have occurred at different ages and in different ways than the thinking of that time said they did.
It is possible to see a particular area known as Hutton’s Section in the Salisbury Crags where the magma forced its way through the sedimentary rocks above it to form the dolerite sills that can be seen in the Section.

Culzean Castle is a castle near Maybole, Carrick, on the Ayrshire coast of Scotland. It is the former home of the Marquess of Ailsa, the chief of Clan Kennedy, but is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland. Since 1987, an illustration of the castle has featured on the reverse side of five pound notes issued by the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Glencoe is a famous valley in the Scottish Highlands and also the name of the village adjacent to the glen on the western side. It is considered one of the most spectacular and beautiful places in Scotland. It is a part of the designated National Scenic Area of Ben Nevis and Glen Coe. Loch Leven, in the adjacent area, is a salt water loch connected to Loch Linhe, a sea loch.

4. Burrell Collection and Pollok Park
The Burrell Collection is an art collection in the city of Glasgow. It is situated in Pollok Country Park on the south side of the city. The Burrell contains an important collection of medieval art including stained glass and tapestries, oak furniture, medieval weapons and armour, Islamic art, artefacts from ancient Egypt and China and Impressionist works by Degas and Cézanne.

2018 UK Trip - Flying from Raleigh to Edinburgh on a Red Eye
Welcome to Our UK Vacation Series. We call this video Day 0. It was probably the most boring part of the entire trip, but we were really excited about it. This was our trip from Raleigh to Edinburgh, with a short layover in Chicago.
We had hoped to have a short visit with family who lives in Chicago, but it was not to be, as a good chunk of our layover was chewed up by a delayed flight out of Raleigh. Maybe next time, Littels!
In Part 2, we explore the city of Edinburgh!
Day 1 of our 2018 trip to Scotland. Today, we spend our first full day in the UK exploring Edinburgh, Scotland. We had a great experience inside St. Giles Cathedral and Thistle Chapel, then we went and toured Edinburgh Castle. We also had lunch at The Royal McGregor and Dinner at Decon Brodies Tavern, two of the more well known places to eat on the Royal Mile.
