Ballymena is a large town in County Antrim, and the eighth largest in Northern Ireland. Ballymena is part of Mid and East Antrim Borough Council. Ballymena is built on land given to the Adair family by King Charles I in 1626, on the basis that the town hold two annual fairs and a free Saturday market in perpetuity. As of 2016, the Saturday market still runs.
Ballymena is the hometown of notable actor Liam Neeson, who was awarded Freedom of the Borough in 2013. It is a popular shopping hub within Northern Ireland and is home to Ballymena United F.C. Ballymena incorporates an area of 632 square kilometres (244 square miles) and is home to large villages such as Galgorm, Ahoghill and Broughshane.
The town of Ballymena used to host Ireland's largest one-day agricultural show at the Ballymena Showgrounds. The town centre has many historic buildings. The Town Hall was built in 1924 on the site of the old Market House, and was refurbished in 2007 at a cost of roughly £20 million.
Ballymena is a market town, but industry developed in the town. The 1980s were a time of job losses in Ballymena as industry suffered. Michelin has a large presence in the Borough (in Broughshane), and JTI Gallaher has a large presence in Galgorm.

Ballycastle Co. Antrim - Places to go to in Northern Ireland
Ballycastle County Antrim - the small town that is located in county Antrim, Northern Ireland, happens to be a touristic place for the attractions it carries and the events that might be taking place in it.
Ballycastle is a small town that is located on the north easternmost coastal tip of the island of Ireland at the northern mainland limit of the Antrim Coast and Glens Area. As much as tourists get astonished with the old historical buildings, they also get mesmerized with the nature they are faced with, and this is one of the things that Ireland in general could manage to offer.
Isn't it always interesting to stand at some point in a country and manage to point out to the borders or to islands that are related to the one next to it? That's exactly the case in Ballycastle, county Antrim, where you could point out to Rathlin Island and Mull of Kintyre which are part of Scotland.
Okay, let's dig deep into the important part now, you might be asking yourself what are the things to do in Ballycastle or the places that you are supposed to visit in order to receive a mesmerizing view; we are going to help you since we have already been there and managed to discover some of these places.
The Fair Head which is a rocky headland found in county Antrim, only three miles away from Ballycastle, and is the point considered the closest to Rathlin Island. There is also the Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge; some people might fear the idea of walking on it, but it is actually a whole different experience as well as a different view; this bridge links the gap that is found between the North Atlantic and a small island.
There is also the Bonamargy Friary which is one of the places to visit in Ballycastle, Northern Ireland, and which is an old friary that was discovered in the late Franciscan time. This Friary is one of the historical places that one could visit in Ballycastle, county Antrim that is believed to carry stories behind.
In Ballycastle, county Antrim, Northern Ireland, you will also get the chance to visit the Holy Trinity Church, you could come across the Ballycastle Museum and see what they have inside, and you could also eventually come to check the Kinbane Castle.
The old history is different from nature and if these attractions we mentioned above will be placed among the different places one should visit in Ballycastle, there are still some other nature-related destinations which one should head to, such as the Lough na Carangh Crannog, which is all about the greenery area and the lake and you could also head to the beach - if the Irish weather will give you the chance to! (
For a lot of people, it might be surprising that there are different places and historical buildings which they could visit and which are not part of Belfast or even Dublin ( but there are actually lots and lots of places that people could go to and which are scattered everywhere in Ireland.
After enjoying those castles, bridges, and getting relaxed by the nature, we want to tell you one more thing you could do in Ballycastle, county Antrim, but only if you are visiting it in the last Monday or Tuesday from August; we want to tell you about the Auld Lammas Fair which is held yearly on the same days, specifically because the last Tuesday in August is a Bank Holiday.
Auld Lammas Fair is a traditional fair that is associated with Lammas Harvest Festival. This fair is a history because it is believed to be held now for 400 years, starting back in the 17th century. There are different things to experience in this fair - we have been there and truly enjoyed our time - you will get the chance to taste and buy different types of candies and sweets (it was finally the time to taste the famous traditional Irish yellowman), you will enjoy walking by the horses and getting into a small farm with different types of animals, buy some toys for the kids, and even see some of the products being sold there which you might be interested to buy yourself any of them. This fair is actually exciting and different - OH, we have even played there on the bull game! - but you might spend more time than you expected, so make sure that you don't have any other plans during the day and give yourself some time to go back home if you are not so close to Ballycastle (
Here, at Connolly Cove, we are trying to help you discover lots of places and things about Ireland and Northern Ireland; we are trying to give you suggestions to places to visit and offer you some recommendations to make your trip more interesting and exciting. Recently, we have been trying to get to other countries around the world and expand that help we are trying to offer to the public.
Visit Ballycastle in county Antrim if you have the chance to and enjoy those places we have suggested then tell us about your experience; do you think it is worth the visit?
Spooky St Mary's, Churchyard (Walkern) ?
I received a message from one of my subscribers telling me to visit Walkern Church, It's Haunted she said and when she visited one night with friends she could hear moaning coming from the Churchyard, they were too frightened to enter,
Now as you all know, I don't visit these places at night, I take a look at them during the daylight hours and having read up on the Church and it's history discovered that Jane Wenham was driven from Walkern by an angry mob who believed her to be a witch. She was later tried as such in Hertford. It is said that after her death she returned to haunt the area around the church.
Now you have the chance to join me in a walk around the graveyard .....

Antrim Castle Gardens - County Antrim, Northern Ireland
Antrim Castle Gardens which is also referred to as Antrim Castle Gardens and Clotworthy House is considered a historic gem which people will never find anywhere else in Northern Ireland; it is the place that was supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund in order to become in the same measure of beauty which we see today.
As much as this location is considered a beautiful green space that one could stroll down to enjoy, it is also considered a historic place which tourists come to visit in order to check the Clotworthy House that is found inside - and which is the reason behind referring to it in the name of the whole place - and at the same time get the chance to visit the Garden Heritage Exhibition in order to know more about the story of Massereene Family.
Antrim Castle, which is located in the same place where the gardens are situated, was also referred to and known as Massereene Castle. The Massereene Castle passed through lots of stages in its development; it was erected in stages between 1613 and 1662, it was destroyed by fire in 1922, and it was finally demolished in the 1970's. In addition to the castle, there was an Italian tower built there in 1887 and a gatehouse which was built in 1818 with twin neo-Tudor towers, with older connecting walls.
People in county Antrim - and in Northern Ireland in general - consider Antrim Castle Gardens a living museum that carries over four centuries of culture and heritage. In these 60-acre gardens, there are some features which you will need to check and which include visiting the Large Parterre, Her Ladyship's Pleasure Garden and Yew Tree Pond. Along the walk in this garden, you will at some point come across the sculpture which is named The Massereene Wolfhound which is considered part of the history of this family that played a great role in bringing this garden to life and giving it the chance to become a historical place until this day.
In order to bring back lots of the things and features which used to make this garden different and take it back to its 17th-century reality, there were lots of things done and a lot of hard work exerted in the major programme that was dedicated to it by the Heritage Lottery Fund that was considered the biggest garden restoration project to be seen in Northern Ireland.
As much as the whole place is mainly about the old restored garden, you will also get the chance to see those new and ornamental gardens during your visit. It is easy to reach this garden and there you will find heritage, you will find education and interpretation, as well as community arts' facilities which you will find them scattered all around Clotworthy House that is part of Antrim Castle Gardens.
There are different events that sometimes take its place in this place and one of these examples is the Christmas event which we even got the chance to attend - it was beautifully different for us as adults as well as for the kids for the different games and other sweets which it managed to serve them ( - we definitely recommend this place for those who are trying to visit a place in county Antrim which will mix between heritage and history as well as the new features and informative things which are all found there.
County Antrim, which is one of the six counties that are found in Northern Ireland, carries several destinations and touristic attractions that people could go to and visit. From the long list that is found out there, we would recommend Bushmills Distillery which is located in Bushmills that is in county Antrim ( Another option is the famous Dark Hedges which is located in Ballymoney in county Antrim as well and which became even more famous after it appeared in the famous Game of Thrones movie series ( Carrickfergus is one destination in county Antrim which we have been to before and which we would recommend as well ( and we would also recommend Carnfunnock Park which is one of the things that we believe should be done in county Antrim - especially if you have kids and want them to enjoy the time along with you - (
There are actually lots of things and places in county Antrim and the suggestions always depend on the place you are residing in and how far you will be from all these different places; always search our channel according to your location and you will definitely find lots of places on it which you could visit and lots of things which you could actually do when it comes to Northern Ireland.
Our trip to Antrim Castle Gardens was all worth it, we enjoyed the mix of history and modernity and that is exactly why we are recommending the place to you all.

The Dark Hedges - 18th Century Tree Lined Avenue
The Dark Hedges is located close to Ballymena Northern Ireland and have been referred to as the Dark Hedges Ballymena, Dark Hedges Ireland, of course - the Dark Hedges Northern Ireland.
They are the most famous Irish trees - more recently since they were used as the Game of Thrones, The Kings Road. Close by the Dark Hedges trees there is The Hedges Hotel and there is a Hedge House with a story of how the hedge trees were planted as an avenue up to the house. If in Ballymena/Ballymoney or the area - this is well worth a visit, but it can be busy at key times.
It might be now one of the most famous places that people tend to visit when it comes to Northern Ireland, not just for being an old historical place with those old trees, but also for appearing in Game of Thrones movie series which a lot of people are huge fans of.
The Dark Hedges carries a story behind its appearance and this story goes back to the Mansion that these beech trees were built as an entrance for. These beech trees are located along Bregagh Road between Armoy and Stranocum in county Antrim and they form some kind of a tunnel that cars tend to walk through. The Dark Hedges actually became more of a touristic attraction after its appearance in Game of Thrones.
The story behind this tree tunnel started back in 1775 when James Stuart built a house which he named Gracehill House after his wife Grace Lynd and then wanted to make the entrance for this home one that is significant and would make all those coming to visit him fall for its beauty, so he planted 150 beech trees in order to create an imposing approach.
Being one famous touristic attraction in county Antrim is one thing to be mentioned about the Dark Hedges, but it is also part of the story to mention the legend that is carried behind this place. According to the legend, the Dark Hedges is visited by a ghost called the Grey Lady who travels the road and moves from one tree to the other, she is claimed to be either the spirit of James Stuart's daughter who has been known as Cross Peggy or else one of the house's maids who have died mysteriously in the place, or else it is believed to be a spirit from an abandoned graveyard beneath the fields who on Halloween is joined with other spirits to the place. There are those visitors who have heard the stories and loved the idea of visiting the place for the chance of feeling any of these spirits, and there are those who come to the place fearing what might come up their face.
Visiting the place is a different kind of experience and walking in this tunnel of beech trees is a whole experience on its own. The problem is that recently, some of those old trees which are now standing for more than 100 years became old enough and could fall down easily, from the 150 trees which were planted in the first place, only 90 remain until this day. According to different studies done on these trees, it is believed that they are at bad states of health and are at risk in bad weather.
Recently, there were some trees which fell back in 2016 and 2017 which led the Woodland Trust to think about closing the road to reduce the amount of visitors who are coming to visit the place with the cars and thus affecting the roots of the trees which they tend to walk over.
The Dark Hedges is actually one of the most photographed natural phenomena in Northern Ireland and it has been voted as one of the top five most beautiful tree tunnels in the world; an enough reason to keep attracting tourists to it.
This place could stand on two different lists, one as being from the touristic places that one could visit while being in Northern Ireland especially if in county Antrim or close to Ballymoney, or else it could come on the list of places related to the Game of Thrones locations that are found in Northern Ireland and which some of them are already famous destinations for one to head to in the country.
We have been to several other Game of Thrones locations in Northern Ireland, like Lough Neagh or the Smoking Sea ( Toome Canal in Toomebridge ( Binevenagh Mountain in Londonderry ( Larrybane which is beside Carrick-A-Rede Rope Bridge ( the famous Cushendun Caves ( and all this comes in addition to the doors which appeared throughout the movie and which are found in different restaurants, cafes and bars.
Even if you are not a fan of Game of Thrones, it is still considered one of the important touristic places that one should visit in county Antrim in Northern Ireland; the feeling of walking under those old trees and being inside that breech trees' tunnel is different! Never miss it!
