알프스의 자연 속에 좀 더 머물고 싶은 마음이 간절했다. 그래서 찾은 체험 농가. 안으로 들어서니 상장이 먼저 눈에 띈다. “저희 농가에서 마리야가 만든 햄, 소시지 등의 음식으로 받은 상들입니다.” 음식 뿐 아니라 농가 보존을 잘 했다고 환경부에서 주는 상도 받았다고 한다. “이 집은 200년 된 집으로 1824년에 지어졌습니다.” 마리야가 태어난 이 집은 20년 전인 1988년에 1층만 리모델링했는데 그때 만든 빵 굽는 화덕은 겨울엔 온돌처럼 사용한다. 가스레인지와 화덕이 조화를 이룬 부엌. 장작을 넣으면 거실의 화덕에도 열이 전달된다. 여름이지만 해가 지면 산속은 제법 서늘해, 온기가 반갑게 느껴진다. 저녁 메뉴는 슬로베니아 전통 빵, 슈뜨루켈. 반죽과 신선한 호두가 맛의 관건인데, 호두는 갈아서 빵에도 넣고 소스에도 사용한다. 반죽 위에 호두를 펴고 시어머니와 며느리가 사이좋게 돌돌 말면 준비 완료! 오븐에 구워 먹기도 하지만 찜통에 찌면 더 부드럽다고 한다. 파티장까지 25km의 눈길을 걸어와 만난 인연, 역시 기다림은 결국 좋은 결과를 낳는다. 모락모락 김이 나는 빵에 소스를 얹으니 슈뜨루켈 완성! 농가의 식탁이 차려졌다. 이곳 사람들의 저녁 식사는 간단하고 소박하다. 보리가루에 야채와 달걀을 넣은 수프와 슈뜨루켈이 전부. 그러나 마리야네 가족과 둘러앉아 먹은 만찬은 어머니가 차려 준 밥상처럼 따뜻하고 맛깔스러웠다. 농가의 아침은 일찍 시작되지만 조용하고 평화롭다. 그런데 한바탕 소동이 벌어졌다. 방목을 위해 목장으로 몰고 가던 송아지가 경로를 이탈한 것!! 태어난 지 6개월 밖에 안됐다는데 영리하게 잘도 도망간다. 하지만 송아지에 질 사람이 아니다. 엄마소를 풀어 일단 경계심을 푼 뒤, 조심스럽게 다가가면. 작전 성공!! 한바탕 소동은 그렇게 끝이 났다. 트랙터를 타고 언덕 위 말에게 먹이를 주러 가기로 했다. 수 십 년 같은 길을 오간 베테랑의 솜씨, 비탈길을 후진으로 잘도 오른다. 저 편에 있는 말을 촬영하는데, 갑자기 잘생긴 말 한 마리가 카메라에 얼굴을 내민다. 주인과의 친밀한 교감은 보기에도 흐뭇하다. 나도 뭔가 말과 교감하고 싶은 마음에 풀을 뜯어 건네니, 서로 욕심껏 챙겨먹고는 방귀소리까지 덤으로 들려준다. 그리고는 돌아보는 말을 보니 피식 웃음이 났다. 말몰이에 신이 난 아이들, 그리고 생생한 자연의 모습. 오감을 열고, 나도 그 자연을 느낀다. 한가로운 구름에선 흘러가는 소리라도 들릴 듯, 조용하고 평화롭다. 늘 갈 곳을 정하고 길을 재촉하는 여행자의 바쁜 마음도 여기 잠시 쉬어간다.

슬로베니아는 국토의 43퍼센트가 석회질 땅인 카르스트 지형이다. 동굴 내부 기온은 여름에도 8도 정도로 서늘한 편, 입구에선 준비 안 된 관광객을 위해 유료로 망토를 빌려주기도 한다. 기차를 타면 지하 동굴 속으로 신비로운 여행이 시작된다. 천장에 매달린 물방울 하나하나가 수천 년, 수만 년에 걸쳐 만들어낸 작품들. 천장에 매달린 종유석도, 바닥에서 솟아오른 종유석도, 모두 서로 다른 아름다움으로 제 빛을 낸다. 그레이트 산이라 불리는 곳부터는 걸어서 관람한다. 그 나이가 무려 15만년으로 추정되는 동굴의 상징, 브릴리언트. 좁은 통로를 따라 가다보면 만나게 되는 스파게티 홀. 천장에 달린 종유석의 모양이 마치 스파게티 같아 붙여진 이름이다. 한참을 걷다 보니 방향 감각도 잃고, 시간도 잊는다. 수만 년 세월의 숨결은 바깥세상을 잊게 하고 현실의 시간을 정지시킨다. 자연이 만들어낸 이 미술관의 또 다른 작품, 커튼. 커튼은 기울어진 암벽을 타고 물이 흘러내리면서 만들어 진다. 눈으로 보는 즐거움 뿐 아니라 아름다운 소리로도 유명한 곳, 실제로 오케스트라 공연이 있었던 콘서트홀이다. 소리가 울려 퍼져 더 아름답게 들린다는데. 호기심에 나도 소리를 내보았다. ‘안녕하세요, 안녕하세요.’ 포스토이나 동굴의 마지막 볼거리가 기다리고 있다. 세계에서 유일하게 이곳에서만 볼 수 있다는 동물, 바로 프로테우스다. 프로테우스는 희귀 동물로 빛이 있는 곳에선 살 수 없는 동물이다. 길이는 30cm 정도로 자세히 보면 사람처럼 손가락 발가락을 가지고 있다. 원래는 동굴에서 자연스럽게 볼 수 있었지만 워낙 희귀동물이라 지금은 수족관에 넣어 보호한다.
