Chapel St. Mary Magdalene and St. Macario Cernache do Bonjardim Portugal
The construction of St. Macarius and St. Mary Magdalene chapel is associated with a legend:
The story goes that in the place where the shrine built almost on top of the mountain, there was a chapel of St. Macarius and more next to the village of St. Mary Magdalene (Casal da Madalena). Due to fires in both chapels were in ruins, the people decided to build a chapel only, as close to the village (C. Madalena), at the foot of the mountain, bringing together both saints. The works were initiated, but the tools that were used for the beginning of the work and they were left to the end of the day next to it, disappeared every night, being found the next day on top of the mountain, next to the ruins of the hermitage St. Macarius. The fact was repeated so many times that tired and puzzled, the people decided that the chapel was built, way up high, in the place where, in the morning, were faced with the tools. Yet legend has it that the reason for this fact is that St. Macarius did not want to miss seeing every day in the morning the other six brothers (Our Lady of Nazareth - Palhais; Santa Ana - Cumeada; Our Lady of Remedies - Serta, Our Lady of Trust - Pedrógão Pequeno, Our Lady of Grace - Grace and St. Neutel - Figueiró dos Vinhos). All these chapels were built, according to legend, in locations at the top of mountains or high hills, from where it is possible sightings of the seven brothers to each other.
The truth is that the top of the Hill of St. Macario, about 10 km from equidistance, you can admire the six chapels. The chapel which brought together the two saints, nowadays used as a bar, was built around the year 1581. This small chapel was replaced by a larger, built around the year 1920 (current chapel).
Another curiosity combined with the chapel and the annual pilgrimage, is the fact that there is an old footpath that connects the place where it was to be built the chapel next to the village and the hilltop.
