If you’ve watched our military shows, you’ll know something about weapons. You might know that the USA has spent a mind-boggling amount of money on the F-35 program. But did the program justify all that money? That surely depends on America’s future military actions and the effectiveness of its super (and super-expensive) multirole fighter.
We can, however, look back through history and see that some weapons were more effective than others. In this show we won’t point out of the obvious, such as spear, sword, bow and arrow, gun, or the atomic bomb, but we’re going to look at other more specific or unusual weapons that were particularly useful in times of war and perhaps a surprise for enemies.

20 Blue Jays Way Unit 2122 Toronto Open House Video Tour
Welcome to the Element Condos at 20 Blue Jays Way, a well-maintained high-rise condominium building with access to fabulous building and neighbourhood amenities - and situated in the heart of downtown Toronto’s Entertainment District.

First World War Tanks and Displays - HD - Bovington Tank Museum, Warhorse and Trench Experience
The Tank Museum in Dorset houses a unique range of World War One Tanks and displays giving visitors the opportunity to experience and find out more about the Great War.
At the outset of the First World War in the summer of 1914 some said the war would be finished by Christmas and yet the war lasted over 4 years, at the cost of countless lives, touching many parts of the world. During the war there were many attempts by each side to gain the upper hand or deal the decisive blow and the creation of the tank was one such attempt and was possibly the most significant technical development of the war.
The Museum houses several original tanks from the period telling the story of the development of the tank from the very beginning. The museum provides an excellent opportunity to see these massive tanks up close, from every angle and even climb aboard some of them, giving you a real feel of what it must have been like for the early tank crews, in cramped, fume-filled conditions at temperatures reaching 50 degrees c.
The museum tells the story of the development of the tank during the First World War, from the first tank, “Little Willie”(which is on display in the museum), built in 1915, through the evolution of the several variants of the rhomboidal shaped “landships” as they were originally called.
The museum recreates the first tank to enter the combat arena, the Mark 1 tank, on the 15 September 1916, near the villages of Flers and Courcelette and the shock that the tank generated in the German soldiers on that day. The museum houses a mix of male and female variants, the latter only armed with machine guns.
My film shows you all of the static display tanks from this era that were on display during my visit, blended with facts and archive footage. The tanks featured in the film are located in the The Tank Story hall and The Discovery Centre.
The Trench Experience
A walk through experience giving you a taste of what the world war one soldier had to endure from enlistment to a recreation of a front-line trench under fire.
War Horse to Horsepower
A unique display telling the story of the vital part that horses played in the war. Following on from the success of Michael Morpurgo’s novel, stage play and Steven Speilberg’s blockbuster movie adaptation telling the story of these unsung heroes. The display examines the role of horses during the First World War and the transition from horsed Cavalry to armoured vehicles in land warfare.
A million horses were sent to France during the war, but only 62,000 returned. These faithful horses endured the same horrors of war as their riders and drivers, the bullets, shells, wire and mud, whilst carrying out their labours.
The walk-through exhibition contains some stunning set pieces combining replica tanks with several stunning horse sculptures, inspired by the designs used in the stage version of Michael Morpurgo’s War Horse. The display also contains a number of other vehicles from the museum collection, including the Hornsby tractor, Peerless Armoured Car, the huge 5-turreted Independent and Light Mark IIA.
World War One Tank Replica
See a moving replica of a mark V tank in the arena on display during holidays and special events (see the Museum website for details). The tank was featured in the Steven Speilberg movie War Horse.
The Museum also runs special events throughout the year including live Tank Action Displays in the Museum’s arena.
Facilities
The museum offers excellent parking. The display halls are light, modern and spacious, offering free access for wheelchair users around the exhibits. The museum also has a very good restaurant and café area. Activities and living-history events are also offered for children at certain times of the year. The Tank Museum is located in Linsay Rd, Bovington, Dorset BH20 6JG.

A tank is a tracked, armoured fighting vehicle designed for front-line combat which combines operational mobility and tactical offensive and defensive capabilities. Firepower is normally provided by a large-calibre main gun in a rotating turret and secondary machine guns, while heavy armour and all-terrain mobility provide protection for the tank and its crew, allowing it to perform all primary tasks required of armoured troops on the battlefield.[1]
Tanks in World War I were developed separately and simultaneously by Great Britain and France as a means to break the deadlock of trench warfare on the Western Front. Their first use in combat was by the British Army on September 15, 1916 at Flers-Courcelette, during the Battle of the Somme. The name tank was adopted by the British during the early stages of their development, as a security measure to conceal their purpose (see etymology). While the French and British built thousands of tanks between them, Germany developed and brought into service only a single design, the A7V, producing 20 vehicles due to lack of capacities or resources.
Tanks of the interwar period evolved into the designs of World War II. Important concepts of armoured warfare were developed; the Soviet Union launched the first mass tank/air attack at Khalkhin Gol (Nomonhan) in August 1939,[2] which later resulted in the T-34, a predecessor of the main battle tank; this was quickly followed up by Germany on a larger scale when they introduced blitzkrieg ('lightning war') less than two weeks later; a technique which made use of massed concentrations of tanks supported by artillery and air power to break through the enemy front and cause a complete collapse in enemy resistance and morale.
The widespread introduction of the HEAT warheads during the second half of WWII led to lightweight anti-tank weapons with considerable power. This caused major changes in tank doctrine and the introduction of effective combined arms tactics. Tanks in the Cold War were designed with these weapons in mind, and led to greatly improved armors during the 1960s, especially composite armor. Improved engines, transmissions and suspensions allowed tanks of this period to grow larger. Aspects of gun technology changed significantly as well, with advances in shell design.
During the 20th century, main battle tanks were considered a key component of modern armies.[3] In the 21st century, with the increasing role of asymmetrical warfare and the end of the Cold War, that also contributed to the increase of cost-effective Russian anti-tank weapons worldwide, the importance of tanks has waned. Modern tanks seldom operate alone, as they are organized into combined arms units which involve the support of infantry, who may accompany the tanks in infantry fighting vehicles. They are also usually supported by reconnaissance or ground-attack aircraft.[4]

A tank is a large type of armoured fighting vehicle with tracks, designed for front-line combat. Modern tanks are strong mobile land weapons platforms, mounting a large-calibre cannon in a rotating gun turret. They combine this with heavy vehicle armour providing protection for the crew of the weapon and operational mobility, which allows them to position on the battlefield in advantageous locations. These features enable the tank to have enormous capability to perform well in a tactical situation: the combination of strong weapons fire from their tank gun and their ability to resist enemy fire means the tank can take hold of and control an area of the battle and prevent other enemy vehicles from advancing, for example. In both offensive and defensive roles, they are powerful units able it to perform all primary tasks required of armoured troops on the battlefield. The modern tank was the result of a century of development from primitive armoured vehicles, due to massive improvements in technology such as the internal combustion engine, which allowed the rapid movement of heavy equipment required to construct armoured vehicles. As a result of the these advances, tanks underwent tremendous shifts in capability during the World Wars of the 20th century.
