Delfzijl is a city and municipality with a population of 25,651 in the province of Groningen in the northeast of the Netherlands. Delfzijl was a sluice between the Delf and the Ems, which became fortified settlement in the 16th century. The fortifications were removed in the late 19th century. Delfzijl is the fifth largest seaport in the Netherlands, and the largest port in the North East of the country.

Termunten is a village in the Dutch province of Groningen. It is a part of the municipality of Delfzijl, and lies about 33 km east of Groningen. Termunten was an independent municipality until 1990, when it was merged with Delfzijl.In 2001, the village of Termunten had 201 inhabitants. The built-up area of the village was 0.082 km², and contained 89 residences. The statistical area Termunten, which also can include the peripheral parts of the village, as well as the surrounding countryside, has a population of around 575.

Wildlands, also known as Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen, is a zoo in Emmen, the Netherlands. It opened in March 2016, replacing the Emmen Zoo. Wildlands is an adventure theme park with four main areas: Jungola, Serenga, Nortica and Animazia. Jungola is jungle-themed and displays butterflies, tropical birds, large reptiles , ring-tailed lemurs, lar gibbons, small-clawed otters and Asian elephants. Fort Bourtange is a star fort in the village of Bourtange, Groningen, Netherlands. It was built under orders of William the Silent and completed in 1593. Its original purpose was to control the only road between Germany and the city of Groningen, which was controlled by the Spaniards during the time of the Eighty Years' War. After experiencing its final battle in 1672, the Fort continued to serve in the defensive network on the German border until it was finally given up in 1851 and converted into a village. Fort Bourtange currently serves as a historical museum.

Groningen is a city located in the north of The Netherlands. It’s a beautiful city. It is not as big as Amsterdam, and can be explored either by walking or cycling. It’s a student city full of liveliness. It is home to the Rijksuniversiteit and the Medical centre.

Netherlands: The Eemskanaal from Groningen to Delfzijl

The Eemskanaal (Ems Canal) connects the city of Groningen (the Verbindingskanaal/Oosterhaven, Winschoterdiep and van Starkenborghkanaal) with Delfzijl (Ems). The canal was built between 1866 and 1876 and was expanded in 1963.
The canal is a major shipping route (suitable for coasters) and is also the main drainage of northeastern Drenthe (the Hunze and the Drentsche Aa) and the area around Hoogezand-Sappemeer, where many shipbuilding is situated.
The canal is 26,5 km long and has a width of 60 meters.

Winter fun in Northern Netherlands

We're out for a fair this weekend (my mom has a store, she sells art stamps) in Assen, Drenthe, The Netherlands. It started snowing the day we arrived, about 10 cm or so (4 in) fell, and then temperatures plummeted. It's been -15C overnight, predicted at a maximum of -4C in the day, down to about -10C min temperature. Coldest recorden this night was -22.8C, coldest it's been in our country since the 1970's.

This is me taping the landscape out at our fair grounds, which are in the middle of nowhere. The fair's been pretty good so far though, and despite the cold a lot of people showed up, and more on the second day (third is tomorrow, sunday). The snow is absolutely beautiful, and on the drive there e watched the sunlight illuminate the frost-crusted trees along the roadside, dying them pink and glittering.
