Places to see in ( Abergele - UK )
Abergele is a community and small market town, situated on the north coast of Wales between the holiday resorts of Colwyn Bay and Rhyl, in Conwy County Borough. Abergele northern suburb of Pensarn lies on the Irish Sea coast and is known for its beach, where it is claimed by some that a ghost ship has been sighted. Abergele and Pensarn railway station serves both resorts. Abergele is often overlooked due to the popularity of nearby Rhyl, Prestatyn, Colwyn Bay, Llandudno and Conwy.
The meaning of the name Abergele can be deduced by aber being the Welsh word for estuary, river mouth or confluence and 'Gele' the name of the river which flows through the town. Gele is a dialectal form of gelau, which means spear, describing the action of the river cutting through the land. It has also been suggested this river is named because its waters flash brightly.
The town itself lies on the A55 road and is known for Gwrych Castle. The town is surrounded by woodland covered hillsides, which contain caves with rare lesser horseshoe bat. The highest hill is Moelfre Isaf (1040 ft) to the south of the town. There are also outstanding views from Cefn-yr-Ogof (669 ft), Tower Hill (587 ft) and Castell Cawr (known locally as Tan-y-Gopa) which is 189 metres (620 feet). Castell Cawr is an Iron age hillfort, one of several in the area. Dinorben hillfort to the east of town was destroyed in the 1980s.
Abergele (including Pensarn) has a population of around 10,000 and is part of the Abergele/Rhyl/Prestatyn urban area with a population of 64,000. Approximately 29% of Abergele has a significant knowledge of Welsh. The town also has satellite villages such as Saint George, Betws yn Rhos, Rhyd-y-foel, Belgrano, Llanddulas and Llanfair Talhaearn.
Abergele was the site of an important clas (Celtic monastery) and remained settled into the 13th century. A Prince Jonathan of Abergeleu is listed by the B text of the Annals of Wales as dying during the 9th century reign of Rhodri the Great. Gwrych Castle was built between 1819-25 at the behest of Lloyd Hesketh Bamford-Hesketh. From 1894 until 1946 it was the residence of the Dundonald family.
A sanatorium was built just outside Abergele in 1910. In 1914 this was acquired by Manchester City Council. A children's sanatorium was built on the same site. The sanatorium was taken over by the newly formed NHS in 1948 and was closed later, when the introduction of antibiotics made the building redundant.

George Best Trail - A Movie of His Family Life in Belfast
George Best's Home life in Belfast - A tribute to the Legend who's number 7 jersey will be remembered for a long time. This YouTube George Best documentary will take you through his early life in Northern Ireland - the clubs he played for, his home and family life.
Tracking the old life of those famous figures all around the world is sometimes a hobby for specific people or at least those who admire some characters and feel that they want to know more about their early life stages or even know more about their life in general.
In Northern Ireland, one of the most famous characters in the football world is George Best who is taking number 7 in Jersey and we decided to go on a trail that is related to his life, one that is all about his early life, his school, and the first steps he used to take for the love of football.
George Best was a Northern Irish professional footballer who played as a winger for Manchester United and the Northern Ireland National Team. Best won the European Cup with Manchester United in 1968 and was even named the European Footballer of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year. The good playing skills and the difference George Best added to the football history made the Irish Football Association even describe him as the greatest player to ever pull on the green shirt of Northern Ireland.
George Best was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland ( and he started his football career in Manchester United Club at the age of 15. George's father, who was also believed to be good when it comes to playing football, used to be a member of The Orange Order whose headquarters is situated at Schomberg House along the Cregagh Road. Best once attended and took part in the annual celebrations and even the collarette which he wore is still displayed in the building until today.
The passion that one might have for something could be the main reason behind his success or failure in the other parts of life. When it comes to George Best, in the first secondary school that Best was part of, Rugby was the sport there and this affected his hatred towards it, until he moved to the new school, received better grades, and managed to play his favorite sport which is football.
George Best grew up in Cregagh Estate and that is where the next part of our trail took place. This was an important part in Best's life because he used to practice his football skills on the estate's playing fields and he got his father as a coach as well, even though the idea of his father watching him play would make him nervous and that is why Dickie never attended his matches. It was not just the help of his father, but even George's mother, Anne, would provide him and his friends with beverages while they were playing football; so the whole family used to give him a support to nurture his football skills.
Cregagh Road was one of the most important commercial streets back in the days of George Best and until this moment, it is still occupied by different family-owned businesses. One of the things that George used to do during his old days was attending the ambassador cinema which is now a department store, where he used to catch Saturday matinees with his friends and saw many classics of the day.
From the other things which are still standing until today and which used to take an important part of George's life is the Ravenhill Presbyterian Church which he used to attend on Sundays with his siblings and grandfather and they would then head to Donard street for lunch just after finishing the service at the church.
From the shops that is still found until these days and which George used to love back then is Desano's ice cream which among Newtownards Road and which is now referred to as W.J. Desano. Even when George Best was ill in London's Cromwell Hospital, his sister, Barbara, used to bring him ice cream from that place when she went over to visit.
Glentoran Football Club was one of those which Best used to support with his father or even his grandfather when he was a young boy - his grandfather used to live near the stadium as well which was considered one of the best things that George could receive.
This was a small tour to follow the trail of George Best, the famous old Irish football player and let you explore him along with some of the best places that could be found in these parts of Northern Ireland.
There are lots to explore in Belfast as well in addition to going through those places related to the life of George Best and explore the city on a bigger scale (
We always feel proud of those famous Irish characters who were born in Northern Ireland and who are also remembered through different signs, statues, or other memorable items that would keep them in our hearts.
Some of the best locations around Ireland / Northern Ireland and further afield. A travel blog/vlog of the hidden treasures that are on our doorstep.

Ravencriage Castle In Kirkcaldy Scotland. The first castle in UK.
Hi everyone thank you for being here and here is about
Ravenscraig Castle,
Ravenscraig Castle may be the first castle in Britain specifically designed to withstand cannon fire. It was to be part of a series of new fortresses that would be capable of withstanding and returning artillery fire.
Ravenscraig was started in 1460 by King James II of Scotland. James was an active king and he took a keen interest in the new science of cannons and gunpowder artillery.
A Defensive Fortress:
The exact reason for a castle here is unclear. It may have been to guard the Firth of Forth from English invasion. Nevertheless, Ravenscraig Castle is certainly well defended.
It was built on a rocky promontory which juts into the Firth. Three sides of the castle have steep cliffs down to the water and on the fourth a wide, natural gully was extended to become a considerable ditch. The front wall is 3.5 metres thick and sports an array of gun holes.
James II never saw his plans completed. Shortly after construction began he was killed during a siege at Roxburgh Castle.
James had taken a large number of cannon with him to attack Roxburgh Castle. ‘The Lion’ was one that he had used successfully in a number of sieges. Unfortunately, however, early cannon could be as dangerous to the men behind them as the men in front. ‘The Lion’ exploded killing James in a shower of metal and wooden shrapnel.
James’ widow Mary of Guelders acted as regent for three years after his death. She used the castle as a dower house, though it’s doubtful that she lived there for any considerable time, and oversaw the continuing construction work until she too died in 1463.
Mary spent a considerable sum of money at Ravenscraig. She employed David Boys as master of works and Henry Merlzioun, the first of three generations of Merlzioun master masons. By the time of her death the east tower was three storeys high and the basement level of the central section was complete.
Construction work stopped until 1471 when James III of Scotland gave the castle to William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness in exchange for the Earldom of Orkney. Sinclair also had an interest in artillery fortification and he continued the construction.
Sinclair Family
The Sinclair family used Ravenscraig as a home. This is reflected in the west tower, which they constructed, having more of a tower house plan. The east tower was completed with makeshift crenellations at the top.
The two D-plan towers were connected by a central block which has the main gate and entrance, a two-storey curtain wall and stone-vaulted cellars. The family’s main living area was in the west tower which has four storeys each with a single room.
The east tower provided residences for the owners senior officials. It also housed the castle’s main well on its ground floor.
In the secure courtyard to the rear were the castle’s main domestic buildings, including the kitchen, bakehouse and domestic offices.
The Sinclair earls were important and powerful and Ravenscraig saw King James V visit in 1540 and hosted James VI in 1598.
The Cromwellian invasion of Scotland in 1650 saw Ravenscraig attacked and damaged. It was garrisoned by Cromwell’s troops in 1651.
The Sinclairs held on to the castle until 1896 when it was sold to Sir Michael Nairn, the Scottish industrialist. During the First World War Ravenscraig was used as an ammunition store and it was passed in to the care of the state in 1955.
Today the castle is looked after by Historic Scotland. There is no custodian at the site, so it is not possible to get in to the towers. However the site is open to the public and it is possible to get into the courtyard.
The castle sits on the edge of Ravenscraig Park in Kirkcaldy. There are various information boards dotted around the site and there are public toilets and car parking available in the park. The centre of Kirkcaldy is a short walk away.
Thank you very for reading hope everyone having a wonderful weekend/days to come xox
