It’s Day 54 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where we’re doing 365 days: 365 activities! Today’s activity is walking the Enchanted Track in Egmont National Park on the slopes of Mt Taranaki!
We drive from Stratford to the forests surrounding the lower slopes of Mt Taranaki, covered in winding dense forests that look like something from a fairy tale. We find out soon enough why they call the walk we go on the Enchanted Track.
The Enchanted Track in Egmont National Park goes through the beautiful forests in a loop joining to other tracks along the way. We are amazed by this awesome wilderness environment right here in the Egmont National Park.
It’s back to the Stratford Holiday Park after doing the Enchated Track of Egmont National Park.

Dawson Falls on Mount Taranaki (Egmont), New Zealand
This stunning waterfall is located within walking distance (10 minutes) of the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre in Egmont National Park.
Local Maori legend tell us how it was given its Maori name, Te Rere 'O' Noke. There was a warrior who had done a great mischief and was running from his would be killers and hid behind the then 18 metre waterfall to hide from his pursuers. They ran past and did not find him, so he escaped to the east coast. When the others heard of how he had escaped them they named the falls after him The Falls of Noke.
The first European to see the falls was Thomas Dawson. He nearly fell over them when he was exploring up the Kapuni River. He built a small hut nearby as he spent many long hours on the mountain exploring. Today the falls still bear his name, as does the tourist lodge 600 m up the road from the falls.
Located on the south eastern slopes of Mt Taranaki, in Egmont National Park.
Dawson Falls sits at the top end of Manaia Road 14 km from Kaponga. The drive to the roadend is through scenic native forest. Kaponga is an easy drive west of Stratford and Eltham.

It’s Day 42 on New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where today’s activity is to do the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway!
After spending a morning at the Duck & Drakes Backpackers, we head to the coast of New Plymouth to do the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway. There are loads of sculptures, art (and slides which we may or may not use) along the way. We also check out some rock pools.
Along the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway we see the Len Lye Wind Wand and the Te Rewarewa Bridge. They look particularly awesome at sunset.
From the New Plymouth Coastal Walkway we make our way back into the city and back to the hostel.

Taranaki is a coastal and mountainous region on the western side of New Zealand's North Island. Its landscape is dominated by Mount Taranaki, its namesake volcano, which lies within the rainforested Egmont National Park. The port city of New Plymouth is the area's hub. It hosts green spaces like Pukekura Park, with lakes and formal gardens that grow rhododendrons and king ferns.

For many people, constantly on the hunt for a striking image to post on Facebook or Instagram, reaching the top of a mountain overlooking the clouds might provide the perfect shot.
And if you're a Playboy model, with nearly 300,000 followers, why not quickly drop your kit and step right into that shot - butt naked.
That is what happened when Jaylene Cook climbed New Zealand's Mount Taranaki.
However local Maori say the move was culturally utterly insensitive.
The top of the volcano is sacred for Maori.
It's like someone went into St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican and took a nude photo, Dennis Ngawhare, a spokesperson for the local Maori tribe, told the BBC.
It's a sacred place and something like this is just very inappropriate.
A sacred ancestor
The picture of Ms Cook, herself from New Zealand, was taken when she climbed the mountain a few days ago with her partner.
Posted on her popular Instagram account, the picture of her gazing into the distance from the 2,518m peak has clocked up nearly 10,000 likes.People might say it's just rocks and earth so how can you disrespect it? says Mr Ngawhare.
But for the local Maori, the volcano is considered the burial ground of the tribe's ancestor and is itself seen as an ancestor.
Traditionally, even just climbing to the top of the peak is inappropriate and only very rarely done for ceremonial purpose.
How prevalent is the naked tourist photo?
Since the country was colonised by the British, the local tribe often had very little say regarding the mountain - which was named Mount Egmont by Captain Cook - and today accept that tourists want to climb the beautiful volcano.
It's only recently that we can have some input on what goes on at the mountain, the local Maori spokesman explains.
We simply ask people to please be respectful. This latest case is just another really annoying example where someone obviously didn't know how to behave here.
Mayor of the local Stratford district, Neil Volzke, agrees the move was culturally insensitive.
I don't think the picture itself is offensive or obscene - it is just inappropriate to take on top of Mount Taranaki because it is a place with great deal of importance for the Maori community, he told the BBC.
A clash of beliefs
When Ms Cook's nude photo began to draw criticism, she defended herself - saying she did research before and thought taking the picture was not offensive.
But local Maori were left somewhat puzzled.
It's a clash between Western assumptions and indigenous values and beliefs, Mr Ngaware says.
Previous incidents on Taranaki have also outraged the local Maori community, including a group of hikers taking a barbecue to the peak for a summit grilling session, and people leaving graffiti on the mountain.
It's a place that should be treated with the utmost respect at all times, insists Mr Volzke.
