Day 59: Today we’re exploring the city of Wanganui in New Zealand! We are checking out some of the free things to do in Wanganui city as part of our 365 Days: 365 Activities!

It’s Day 59 of New Zealand’s Biggest Gap Year where we are challenging ourselves to do 365 Days: 365 Activities in New Zealand! Today we are exploring the city of Wanganui! What’s more all the things we are going to be doing are free (or very very cheap).

We take a look at the city centre architecture of Wanganui before hitting the Wanganui Museum. Next, it’s off to Durie Hill to take the historic Durie Hill Elevator which is down and awesome tunnel lined with Maori carvings.

After a bumpy ride up the Durie Hill Elevator, we arrive at the Durie Hill Water Tower which is free to climb up. We go up countless stairs of the Durie Hill Tower to get some awesome views of Wanganui City and the Whanganui River.

It’s back to our accommodation now, the 42b College House backpackers.

Dawson Falls on Mount Taranaki (Egmont), New Zealand

This stunning waterfall is located within walking distance (10 minutes) of the Dawson Falls Visitor Centre in Egmont National Park.

Local Maori legend tell us how it was given its Maori name, Te Rere 'O' Noke. There was a warrior who had done a great mischief and was running from his would be killers and hid behind the then 18 metre waterfall to hide from his pursuers. They ran past and did not find him, so he escaped to the east coast. When the others heard of how he had escaped them they named the falls after him The Falls of Noke.

The first European to see the falls was Thomas Dawson. He nearly fell over them when he was exploring up the Kapuni River. He built a small hut nearby as he spent many long hours on the mountain exploring. Today the falls still bear his name, as does the tourist lodge 600 m up the road from the falls.

Located on the south eastern slopes of Mt Taranaki, in Egmont National Park.

Dawson Falls sits at the top end of Manaia Road 14 km from Kaponga. The drive to the roadend is through scenic native forest. Kaponga is an easy drive west of Stratford and Eltham.

Unsere Reise geht weiter in Richtung Westküste. Nach einem kurzen Zwischenstopp im Tongariro National Park fahren wir zu den Three Sisters und auf den Mount Taranaki. Zum Schluss geht es noch an die westlichste Spitze zum Cape Egmont Lighthouse.

The new (New Zealand) Alps 2 Ocean 300+ km CYCLEWAY, is (just another segment of):
The NZ Government's plan to create hundreds of kilometres of (near useless) cycling pathways
Which are being DUG, RIPPED & TORN (bulldozed) out of our naturally beautiful NZ Countryside
On the assumption that (just) a few hardy souls will then use push bikes (instead of motorised transport)
To then TRAVEL VAST DISTANCES through some of our more innaccessible, desolate & isolated backarea locations ..!

Please read as: NO HUMANS LIVING NEARBY ..!!! (Thus little, to no, QUICK - immediate help available - if required).

These are being constructed (around NZ) on the premise that this blatant scarring of our scenic areas..
Shall in some way enhance everyone's enjoyment -- of our natural outstanding landscape..?

Huh .. you could have fooled me.. as I (for one) will NEVER cycle any of these..
(And)
I would hazard a good guess that MOST of the other New Zealander's around here..
ALSO -- will not cycle this (new) 300+km Alps 2 Ocean cycleway.

Why not.?
Because - Immediately upon starting this so-called FREEDOM travelling mode..!
A 90 sec $NZ300+ Heli-lift is required.. to just GET YOU across the Lake Pukaki headwaters
Not something that most New Zealander's (or some cycling tourists) will be likely to have - as spare cash

Thereafter; most of the next 300km's is undertaken many km's away from any service towns or communities.
WITH ONLY A SMALL FRACTION ... ACTUALLY ON ITS OWN (the rest is ridden along the MAIN HIGHWAY
Not something that MOST people will ever contemplate undertaking when that (pre-existing) tarsealed road is:
Not only already available (and has been for many years)
But.. (and this is a major safety issue)
You will be ridding downhill along one of the busiest OPEN ROAD 100 kph + stretches of NZ Highway
And.. you will be intermixed (with &) alongside all other high speed (100 kmph+) normally motorised traffic

Most of which will be driven by Oversea's Tourists whom themselves are (often) more interested in looking at scenery .!!!
(than where they are at doing any driving, or as to whichever side of these roads.. that they thus even do that - upon).

So.!
Cycle Riders beware .. as for almost the entire Alps 2 Ocean cycleway trip ...
You will be taking your own life.. into your hands ..AND tossing this - over to (often dangerous) motor vehicle drivers.
(And at other times.. you will be riding, many miles distant & thus often far too far away .. from instant emergency help).

P.s.. As I only had the cellphone video running..

Thus .. sometime in the (near) future ..
?Maybe?
I will do a similar filming - of the lower half (distance) of this 300+ km cycleway trip.
ie: parts 4, 5 & 6 ...
