Florina (Greek: Φλώρινα, known also by several alternative names) is a town and municipality in mountainous northwestern Macedonia, Greece. Its motto is, 'Where Greece begins'. It is also the Metropolitan seat for the region. It lies in the central part of Florina regional unit, of which it is the capital. Florina belongs to the region of West Macedonia. The town's population is 16,771 people (2001 census).
The city's original Byzantine name, Χλέρινον (Chlérinon, full of green vegetation), derives from the Greek word χλωρός (chlōrós, fresh or green vegetation). The name was sometimes Latinized as Florinon (from the Latinflora, vegetation) in the later Byzantine period, and in early Ottoman documents the forms Chlerina and Florina are both used, with the latter becoming standard after the 17th century. The form with (φλωρός) is a local dialect form of χλωρός in Greek.

The Prefecture of Kastoria is located at the west end of Western Macedonia, bordering with the prefectures of Florina, Grevena, Kozani and Ioannina, as well as with Albania, to the west.
The city of Kastoria unfolds amphitheatrically 620 metres above sea level. It is built on a peninsula that penetrates Orestiada Lake, in the shade of the impressive mass of Grammos and Vitsi Mountains. According to the last census, the population of the Prefecture is 53.483 inhabitants, 20.636 of whom live in the city.
Kastoria is connected with Athens by air, through the Aristotle International Airport at Argos Orestikon. The Prefecture is nowadays easily accessed via Egnatia Highway. Alternatively, one can always use the old national road.

Macedonia today is a geographical region of Greece, and the largest of the Greek territory.
It constitutes most of the geographic and historical region of ancient Macedon, a Greek kingdom ruled by the Argeads whose most celebrated members were Alexander the Great and his father Philip II.
In 336 B.C., Alexander the Great became the leader of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia. By the time he died 13 years later, Alexander had built an empire that stretched from Greece all the way to India. That brief but thorough empire-building campaign changed the world: It spread Greek ideas and culture from the Eastern Mediterranean to Asia. Historians call this era the Hellenistic period.
The name Macedonia was later applied to identify various administrative areas in the Roman and Byzantine Empires with widely differing borders.

Florina (Greek: Φλώρινα) is a town and municipality in mountainous northwestern Macedonia of Greece. Its motto is, 'Where Greece begins'. It is also the Metropolitan seat for the region. It lies in the central part of Florina peripheral unit, of which it is the capital. Florina belongs to the periphery of West Macedonia. The town's population is 16,771 people (2001 census). It is in a wooded valley about 13 km (8 mi) south of the international border of Greece with FYROM.
Several etymological interpretations ave been attempted and assumptions have been made concerning the origin of the name of Florina. According to one mythological interpretation the name of the town derives from the mythical Dioskouros Kastoras and his ally Floris. The Byzantine historian kantakouzinos refers to the Byzantine castle Flerinon or Hlerinon , the secretary of the Enetic Republic G. Cavazza on his wary from Ahrida in 1591 passes by through Fluribelli; where as the Turkish interpretation of the town's name, salvaged by the Albanian invaders of the 17th and 18th century, refers to the Filourina version which dervies frm filouri meaning old coin. In 1750 the name Herinos or Filorina appears in ecclesiastical documents.
