Petron Lake, located near Aminteo in Macedonia, is set against the stunning backdrop of Mount Voras and Mount Vermio. The lake, as well as the nearby Lake Vegoritida, is a member of the NATURA 2000 protected areas. The two lakes are home to over a hundred species of birds, some of which are endangered. Near the lake are some sights worth seeing: the Agios Panteleimonas settlement, Petra town of the Hellenistic period and many Byzantine monuments. It is one of the most important wine growing areas in Greece from antiquity to present day and the vineyards are open to visitors.
