Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Fluminimaggiore
Fluminimaggiore, Frùmini Majori or Flùmini Majori in sardinian language, is a comune in the Province of South Sardinia in the Italian region Sardinia, located about 60 kilometres northwest of Cagliari and about 30 km north of Carbonia.
Fluminimaggiore borders the following municipalities: Arbus, Buggerru, Domusnovas, Gonnosfanadiga, Iglesias. The Temple of Antas is located in the Fluminimaggiore territory. There are several museums in the town, including a paleontology museum.
From the mountains to the sea, passing through natural monuments, prehistoric testimonies, Phoenician-Punic and Roman heritage and industrial archeology. Fluminimaggiore is a center of three thousand inhabitants lying in the valley of the river Mannu . The river flows inside the village and sets the shovels of the Zurru Licheri mill , dating back to 1750, now an ethnographic museum: here you will learn about local culture and history.
The current settlement was born in 1704 when the viscount Asquer granted to rebuild the village of Flumini Major, uninhabited for a century. From the end of the 19th century the agricultural village turned into a mining support center: you will visit a symbolic place of Sardinian mining history with around thirty sites, witnesses of a sudden and ephemeral development. The ghost village of the Malacalzetta mine stands out .
The territory rich in woods, starts from the slopes of Mount Linas and descends towards the coast with beautiful landscapes. In the coast there are several coves: Guardia is Turcus , sa Perdixedda Manna and sa Perdixedda Pittica ('the big and small pebble ') and the tourist village of Portixeddu, ten kilometers from the town. The long beach, cut in half by the mouth of the river Mannu , is of ocher-colored fine sand, bordered by a cliff with natural pools, which plunges into the crystalline sea. Five kilometers from the village, you will explore the fairytale caves of su Mannau , a karst complex 'sculpted' 540 million years ago.
It is characterized by naturalistic beauty, speleological interest and archaeological importance (a hall was a hypogeum temple). You will immerse yourself in the magic that rests in the subsoil between saloons studded with huge limestone formations and with unique shapes, stalactites and stalagmites, crystals and ponds. The caves were connected to the temple of Antas, one of the greatest monuments of Sardinian Antiquity, which you will reach by a path already traced by the Romans (four kilometers from Su Mannau ) .
In a lush valley, you will admire a flight of three shelves (originally more) and a podium adorned with elegant columns delimiting the votive areas. Born as a sanctuary nuragico (ninth century BC), the Carthaginian lived phases and Punic-Hellenistic. During the Roman era the temple knew its maximum splendor. A nearby tomb has returned the bronze of a deity: perhaps the Sardus Pater or the Punic god Sid , transposition of the local divinity Babai . In the summer, Antas Music Festival is staged in this scenario .
In Archaeological museum on display other than those of the temple, prenuragic, nuraghic, Phoenician-Punic, Roman and medieval finds of the territory. Also worth visiting is the paleontological museum with reconstruction of the Palaeozoic marine environment. The most felt events are: fires of St. Anthony the Abbot (16 January), rites of Holy Week and feasts of St. Anthony of Padua (June) and St. Mary of the Assumption (August).

Sardinia (Sardegna / Sardigna) is a large island in the Tyrrhenian Sea, between the Balearic islands and the Italian peninsula and south of Corsica. It is an autonomous region which currently belongs to Italy.
Sardinia, with its quintessential Mediterranean beauty, is mainly loved for swimming, boating, windsurfing, hiking, climbing, and camping, with coastal areas tending to become over touristed especially in the warmest month, August. The inner life of the island away from the tourist spots takes longer to appreciate and requires you to peel away the layers of apparent Italianization. After all, the ancient Nuragic civilization of Sardinia of ca. 1500 BC, whose stone monuments still dot the land, predates even the Etruscan civilization in mainland Italy by several hundred years.
Do in Sardinia
===========
Sea: sailing has become increasingly popular in the last thirty years, in particular in the Costa Smeralda area; the first Italian challenge in the America's Cup hailed from there. There are many ports everywhere, and some places are reachable only by boat. Do not miss this opportunity if you like to sail.
Islands: while not many, the islands are generally of interest; check in particular the Asinara National Park (famous for its Albino Donkeys) and the Maddalena archipelago in the North, the islands of San Pietro (a community of Genoese fishermen) and Sant'Antioco (actually connected to the main land since Roman times) in the South.
Beaches and coasts: the North and Northeast (from Stintino to Budoni) boast many beautiful beaches. The Eastern coast is also very interesting: Cala Gonone, Arbatax, Muravera and Villasimius, to name a few. The deep South (Chia, Pula) is quickly growing as a major tourist attraction. The western coast is of a very different character; large beaches some kilometres long can be found (Porto Pino, Marina di Gonnesa, Marina di Arbus). Of note is Piscinas (Marina di Arbus) with its 60 m-tall sand dunes. Finally, the Alghero area is renowned for its underwater caves and grottoes and attracts many scuba divers.
Hills and 'Mountains': while Sardinia's highest elevation does not reach 2000 m (6500 ft), do not be fooled: terrain is steep, snow falls in winter, and there are four ski resort in the Gennargentu area. Hills are everywhere in Sardinia, from the Northeastern Monte Limbara Range to the Iglesiente area in the Southwest, even at the outskirts of Cagliari.
Horseback Riding: Sardinia has a long tradition of horse riding. The Sardinian Anglo-Arab is a horse breed that was established in Sardinia. Nowadays there are several farms and B&Bs offering horseback riding or horse trekking tours. Riding through woods an along beaches is a very popular tourists attraction.
Monuments and sites: Sardinia has few known monuments but many are well worth visiting. Check in particular Cagliari (Sard. Casteddu, Castle), Oristano, Sassari, Alghero, Olbia, and Nuoro. Nuraghi and Domus de janas (Sard. for witch houses) are found in many places, in particular in Barumini (Su Nuraxi, in the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites since 1997) and around Alghero. Tharros, Nora, and Monte Sirai (just off Carbonia) are fine examples of the Phoenician/Carthaginian presence. Roman remains are also found in Sardinia, among which Nora, the Sant'Antioco bridge or the Amphitheatre in Cagliari; the Antas site in Fluminimaggiore is also of interest, even if the present temple is actually a reconstruction of the original. Pisans have left important traces in the South (Cagliari, Iglesias) and the well-preserved Castello di Acquafredda (It. for cold water castle) near Siliqua is worth a visit, as well as the back country. Bosa is of interest for its medieval urbanism; Burgos (Castle of Goceano) is also worth a visit. Some fine churches are found in the island, from the early Christian times to the Baroque period, in the aforementioned cities but also in Porto Torres and Iglesias (Spanish for church).
Folklore: Sardinia has strong traditions which are expressed also through costumes and celebrations. Quite often, even small centres have local celebrations where people dress in rich traditional costumes. However, it is simpler to go to the major venues as there is a considerable afflux from all over Sardinia. A non comprehensive list includes: Sant'Efisio (Cagliari, 1 May, actually lasts several days), Sagra del Redentore (Nuoro, last Sunday of August), Cavalcata sarda (Sassari, penultimate Sunday of May, horse parade and races), Faradda di li candareri (Sassari, 14 August), Sa Sartiglia (Oristano, Carnival period, horse races), and everywhere the celebrations during Carnival and the Holy Week.
Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Nora
Places to see in ( Sardinia - Italy ) Nora
Nora is an ancient Roman and pre-Roman town on a peninsula near Pula, near to Cagliari in Sardinia. In his Description of Greece, Pausanias, a Greek-Roman geographer of the second century, narrates the mythological foundation of the city: After Aristaeus, the Iberians crossed to Sardinia, under Norax as leader of the expedition, and they founded the city of Nora. The tradition is that this was the first city in the island, and they say that Norax was a son of Erytheia, the daughter of Geryon, with Hermes for his father.
The area was previously occupied by a village of indigenous Sardinians, but soon became an emporium and then a Phoenician city. Especially after the conquest of Carthage, Nora flourished, as (along with Bithia near Chia) it was the first stage on the sea route from Carthage to Sardinia and its most important city, Cagliari. The Nora Stone, a Phoenician inscription found at Nora in 1773, has been dated by palaeographic methods to between the late 9th century and early 8th century BCE, and has been interpreted as referring to a Phoenician military victory and conquest of the area.
After a period of domination by Carthage, the town came under Roman control after the conquest of Sardinia in 238 BCE. The city is mentioned in the Tabula Peutingeriana, a Roman-period road map. It went into decline from the 4th century CE after the Vandal conquest of Sardinia. According to the Ravenna Cosmography, after the Arab conquest of Carthage the city lost its economic function and became a simple fort (Nora praesidium). Nora appears to have been abandoned during the 8th century. Its toponym, however, remained in the name of a curadoria (main administrative division) of Judicatus of Caralis at the beginning of the second millennium. Nora was an important trading town in its time, with two protected harbours, one on each side of the peninsula. Several different building styles can be seen in the excavated buildings.
Because the southern part of Sardinia is sinking into the Mediterranean Sea, a substantial part of the former town is now under the sea. A similar fate has befallen nearby Bithia, which is now completely submerged. A significant part of the town of Nora situated on land belonging to the Italian Army has not been excavated. The ruins of Nora are an open-air museum, and the remains of the theatre are occasionally used for concerts in the summer.

NORA 4K Pula (CA) Sardegna
